Chapter 575 Men Understand Men Best

"Marriage isn't something you should just jump into," Jesse tried to convince her again.

"Yeah, I know," Elara cut him off, locking eyes with him, dead serious. "One last time, will you marry me or not?"

Jesse opened his mouth but nothing came out. He wanted to spill his guts, but he knew he couldn't just blurt it out like a teenager.

"So, that's a no?" Elara asked.

"Sorry," Jesse mumbled, feeling all sorts of things.

"Don't be," Elara said, getting out of bed and starting to get dressed. "If you don't want to marry me, then from now on, stay out of my life. If you show up, I'll assume you changed your mind."

"Elara," Jesse sighed.

"Think it over," she said, grabbing her clothes and heading to the walk-in closet.

Jesse wanted to say more, but she was already gone.

For the next half hour, there was radio silence. It was more like Elara didn't give Jesse a chance to talk.

At 8:20, Elara gathered her stuff, ready to leave.

Jesse, feeling like a kid who messed up, offered, "I can drive you."

"No need," Elara shot back, her eyes a mix of emotions. "Remember what I said. Don't come around until you've made up your mind. I can't handle your indecision."

And with that, she was out the door.

Jesse wanted to run after her, but his legs felt like lead. He just stared at the door she closed, feeling all kinds of messed up.

After a bit, he pulled out his phone to text her, only to find out she had blocked him. Even his backup account was blocked.

Elara didn't want to block him, but she had to go all in.

With Jesse's stubbornness, if she didn't take drastic steps, nothing would change, just like Willie had said.

"Stop sulking," Willie said, hands in his pockets, looking at the clearly upset Elara. "I told you I'd get him to come around, and I will."

"And if you don't?" Elara asked, losing hope.

"Then I'll be your husband," Willie joked. "You could do worse."

Elara kicked him. "Get lost!"

"Lots of people want to marry me," Willie said, always full of himself. "Don't be ungrateful."

Elara just rolled her eyes and walked with him to City Hall.

Looking at the place, all she could think about was marrying Jesse here.

Seeing her spaced out and sad, Willie handed her a fake marriage certificate. "Here, our proof of marriage."

"What now?" Elara asked.

"Just give me a key to your place," Willie said, getting serious. "You told Jesse that's where you'd live after getting married, so I need to be there sometimes."

Elara pulled out the access card from her bag and handed it to Willie. "The inner door code is my birthday."

"Got it," Willie said, taking the card.

They hung around inside for a bit before heading out together.

As they walked out of City Hall, Willie turned to Elara. "Wanna grab a drink?"

"No," Elara shot back.

"Come on, I'll call Autumn to join us," Willie suggested. Although he was quite annoying, he could be considerate at times. "It's your first real day of heartbreak, after all."

"You could just not talk," Elara grumbled, hating the word "heartbreak."

"Seriously," Willie said with a mischievous grin, "What's Jesse's deal?"

"My desk mate," Elara replied.

"Who cares about the past?" Willie waved it off. "I mean, what's his current status?"

Elara gave him a look and then said, "He's the president of HorizonTech Group."

Willie's face got serious. "You're not joking?"

"Would I joke about something like this?" Elara retorted.

"Then I think I know why he likes you but won't admit it," Willie said, standing by the roadside with one hand in his pocket.

Elara looked at him, curious. "Why?"

"He's the president of HorizonTech Group. If he even hints at wanting a relationship, people will be all over him," Willie explained, still with a casual attitude. "For him, giving up all those options for just you seems like a big deal."

Elara thought she must be crazy to be having this conversation with Willie.

Willie noticed her expression. "You don't believe me?"

"Not everyone is like you," Elara said, sure it wasn't like that. "He's not that kind of person."

"Men understand men best," Willie continued, clearly trying to stir things up. "You can't read his mind. How do you know his true thoughts?"

"I can't be bothered to talk to you," Elara said, grabbing her bag and hailing a cab.

Willie tried to stop her. "Want me to give you a ride?"

"No need!" Elara felt that staying with him any longer would drive her nuts.

Willie smiled as he watched her leave. He then took out the fake marriage certificate and looked at it. It really did look pretty real.

Even though it was fake, Willie felt a weird sense of responsibility.

"Mr. Willie Reed?" The driver, seeing Willie staring at the marriage certificate, tentatively asked, "Aren't you going to tell Mr. Harold Reed and Mrs. Reed about your marriage to Ms. Gonzalez?"

"Why should I tell them?" Willie said as he opened the car door and got in, playing with his phone. "It's a fake marriage."

Willie instructed, "Don't let this get out. If anyone asks, say Elara and I are really married."

"What if your parents ask first?" The driver asked.

"I'll handle it," Willie said, reliable in these matters. "You don't need to worry."

The driver nodded and started the car, driving away.

Neither of them noticed that a few cars back, a low-key black Volkswagen was parked, with Jesse sitting in the driver's seat, quietly following them.
