Chapter 630 Why Are You Unhappy
Diana just wanted to hang out with Charles, nothing more.
Louis bit his lip, not sure what to say. He had a hunch that Charles was probably going to spoil Diana.
"Didn't Mom and Dad say we should go after what and who we love?" Diana said softly, but her words hit hard. "I like Charles now. Is it wrong for me to want to spend more time with him?"
"No, it's not wrong," Charles replied.
"Then will you come over to our house tonight?" Diana asked again.
Charles' lips pressed into a thin line, and his hands clenched at his sides. He felt a bit nervous and uneasy, but tried to hide it.
Louis noticed his discomfort and stepped in, "We'll be back really late. Are you sure you'll still have time to hang out with Charles?"
Diana thought for a moment and realized she wouldn't.
"Be good and wait until Charles has time to visit," Louis said, pulling her to sit beside him.
Diana immediately nodded. "Okay."
Louis was right, so she listened to him.
A while later, Gilbert called them to eat, and everyone was pretty quiet during the meal.
As they were finishing up, Gilbert glanced at Charles, then at Louis and Diana. "You don't need to rush off after dinner."
Louis and Diana both looked at Gilbert, curious.
"Your parents just called me, saying they'll pick you up at seven," Gilbert said, giving Charles a special look. "They want you to wait here."
"Really?" Diana was thrilled.
Gilbert nodded.
After dinner, Diana started talking to Louis. "Louis, since Mom and Dad want us to wait here, I don't have to go back and think about my mistakes, right?"
"No," Louis said fairly.
Watching the two kids talk, Gilbert couldn't help but ask, "Why do you listen to Louis so much?"
Gilbert's own twins never listened to each other.
"Because Louis is smart," Diana said, backing Louis up. "Louis loves me the most besides Mom and Dad, so of course I listen to him."
"He doesn't bully you?" Gilbert asked.
Diana shook her head. Even though Louis sometimes scolded her, she always felt he was right afterward, and if she wanted to do something Louis didn't approve of, she'd act cute until he agreed.
Charles adjusted his clothes and stood up. "I have to go," he said, his deep eyes glancing at Gilbert. "Take good care of these two until their parents come."
"Why don't you take care of them?" Gilbert asked.
Charles' eyes turned a bit cold.
Gilbert teased, "Aren't you having a good time with them?"
"Charles," Diana tugged at Charles' clothes, her pretty eyes looking up at him, "Can you wait a little longer? I want to introduce you to my parents."
Diana really liked Charles because he played with them and even got clothes ready for them, just like Benjamin, making everyone feel he was dependable.
At first, Charles said firmly, "No," but then he softened, "I'll stay with you for another twenty minutes. I have to leave by 6:40."
"Okay," Diana agreed.
For the next twenty minutes, Diana and Charles sat together, chatting about all sorts of childish things.
Watching them, Louis felt a mix of emotions he couldn't quite describe. Besides Benjamin, even Gavin couldn't do this. What was the deal between Charles and Daphne?
"Mr. Fisher, Mr. Reynolds, and Ms. Murphy are here to pick up the kids," the butler announced, walking in from outside.
Charles stiffened.
Gilbert stood up. "Come on, kids, let's go, I'll see you out."
Diana reluctantly got up and, after glancing at Charles a few times, obediently followed Louis out.
Charles trailed behind. When they reached the door, he found a spot to hide behind the flower bushes, watching the gentle and calm Daphne. He realized that, after all these years, she hadn't changed a bit.
"Sorry for the trouble," Benjamin said, his deep voice as lazy and pleasant as ever. "When you have time, bring the kids to our house."
"Okay," Gilbert replied.
After a brief greeting, Daphne and Benjamin were ready to take Louis and Diana home. As Diana was getting into the car, she was dragging her feet. Daphne noticed and squatted down in front of her, asking gently, "Do you miss Lon?"
"No." Diana shook her head.
Benjamin raised an eyebrow, a bit surprised.
Louis sat in the car, staying quiet.
"Then why are you unhappy?" Daphne tucked her hair behind her ear.
"I miss Charles," Diana blurted out.
Daphne paused, "Charles?"
"Yeah!" Diana nodded, recounting the afternoon and praising Charles, "He was so nice to us, played games with us, and even got clothes for us so we wouldn't catch a cold."
Playing games with them was really not something Charles would do.
"Dad, Mom, can I call Charles out to meet you?" Diana asked, thinking it would be better for adults to handle the conversation, "Can you invite him to our house?"
"Okay." Daphne rubbed her head. "As long as Charles wants to come, he's welcome. But if he doesn't want to, we can't force him, understand?"
"Got it!" Diana agreed quickly.
As soon as she finished speaking, Diana ran back inside, while Gilbert wisely took the two kids inside without interfering.
"Charles," Diana called out as she searched the living room. When she didn't see anyone, she called out again, "Charles, where are you?"
"Here," Gilbert pointed casually, giving away Charles' hiding spot.
Charles shot Gilbert a cold, emotionless look.
Although Gilbert was a bit scared, he naturally said, "Diana is looking for you, why don't you respond?"
"Charles!" Diana ran over, her eyes lighting up when she saw him.
Charles' hand tightened slightly. He walked up to her and asked gently, "What's up?"
