Chapter 36 The Mistress is So Arrogant
"Understood," Charles said and hung up the phone.
He knew that his parents and grandfather would not accept Kayla. In their hearts, they only recognized Daphne. Suppressing his emotions, Charles headed out to the location Daphne sent him. He randomly took a car from the company and went over.
When he arrived, Daphne was already there. After not seeing each other for a few days, Charles had an indescribable feeling. Daphne didn't seem to be doing poorly after leaving him, completely different from those heartbroken girls online.
"Besides the child, did Kayla tell you anything else?" Charles was quite direct, without any small talk, and got straight to the point.
Daphne opened the call recording on her phone and handed it to him. Charles glanced at her and then listened to it. When he heard that Kayla's voice was obviously not right, his heart tightened suddenly. Without much thought, he blamed Daphne, "Why didn't you reach out to me the first time?"
She calmly asked, "Why should I help her find you?"
"If she didn't encounter any difficulties, she wouldn't have called you in the first place," Charles was filled with coldness, his words were all displeased. Daphne really didn't know where he had the audacity to say such things. "Do you want to argue?" Charles asked, his thin lips tightly pressed together.
Without answering him, Daphne watched as he dialed Kayla's number on her phone, realizing that he had taken her off the blacklist and was calling her again. Daphne was too tired to argue with him after witnessing his series of actions.
The call connected after a short while. "Miss Murphy..." Kayla's soft voice came through.
"It's me," Charles said, the two words exuding a sense of reassurance, his expression and eyes filled with tenderness.
Daphne felt nauseous upon hearing it, but she didn't stop him. She knew Charles too well; her interference would only lead to a fight later.
"Charles..." Kayla sobbed on the other end, her voice choked with sorrow.
"Don't cry, take your time," Charles spoke gently to her, "Why did you tell Daphne that you're pregnant with my child? We both know that..."
"I couldn't reach you, so I thought of this method," Kayla continued crying.
"What happened?" Charles inquired.
"I..." Kayla began.
"Take your time."
"Charles, I miscarried." As soon as those words came out, Charles' hand holding the phone froze, and his whole body stiffened.
While Kayla continued to sob, barely able to catch her breath, Charles composed himself. He knew Kayla needed his care at this moment. "Who did this?" he asked.
"I don't know..." Kayla's voice was hoarse, and it was evident that she was truly devastated.
"Last night, I went shopping with Mary, and midway through, I received a text message. It said that someone missed me and was waiting for me at a hotel, claiming to be you, Charles." His grip on the phone tightened.
Kayla was utterly hopeless. "I missed you so much that I thought you might have changed your number to avoid Miss Murphy and contacted me instead, so I went to meet him. I didn't expect that someone would knock me out as soon as I arrived at the hotel room, and when I woke up, it was already..." Kayla couldn't continue speaking, "Charles, I'm scared to contact anyone, but now you're my only hope."
His heart was shattered by her last words.
Without any hesitation, Charles spoke, "Where are you now?"
"At the apartment you provided me," Kayla curled up on the bed, her eyes swollen like walnuts.
"Wait for me there," Charles urged her, making a promise, "I'll come back to accompany you right away. Don't overthink things."
"But... between you and Miss Murphy..." Kayla's voice trailed off.
"I will handle it," he assured her.
With that, Charles hung up the phone, and handed it back to Daphne, his emotions clearly evident. "The agreement we had before is canceled starting today. Kayla is in trouble, and I need to go take care of her." Daphne remained silent, just watching him.
In all the time she had known Charles, this was the first time he had broken his self-imposed rule. “You have no way of stopping me from divorcing you if you don't agree,” Charles blocked Daphne's path directly.
Daphne didn't care about any of this. She hoped to end this absurd and disgusting marriage.
She just wanted to know one thing: "Charles." Charles looked up. "Do you really like Kayla that much?" Daphne asked calmly.
"Yes."
"Enough to disgust me again and again?" Charles didn't respond.
Daphne couldn't be bothered to say anything more to him. "If you choose to leave Gedser with Kayla today, we will be enemies when we meet again."
Her greatest tolerance was for a peaceful divorce, as strangers. But since this person wanted to break the agreement, she didn't mind being an obstacle for him. She truly despised being cheated on.
"Can you not be so childish?" Charles grew angry upon hearing those words. "If it weren't for Kayla being in trouble, I wouldn't have broken our agreement."
"It has nothing to do with me."
"Daphne!"
"I've already said it; it's your choice." Daphne stirred her coffee cup calmly, speaking indifferently.
Charles' eyes suddenly darkened. "Are you intentionally trying to provoke me?"
"Mr. Lancelot, your ability to distort right and wrong is truly extraordinary," Daphne put down her spoon, a cold smirk appearing on her lips. "Clearly, it was you who betrayed me, yet somehow it became me provoking you."
"Kayla was assaulted," Charles explained, becoming slightly calmer, not wanting to truly escalate the situation with her.
Daphne was indifferent. "It has nothing to do with me."
"She was raped at a hotel," Charles explained, his heart sinking. "You're also a woman, you should know how devastating it is when something like this happens. She got into trouble because she was looking for me, I can't just sit back and do nothing."
When Daphne heard the first part, a ripple stirred in her heart. Not liking Kayla was one thing, but detesting and hating those who abused women was another. But when she heard the latter part, she suppressed her emotions. She didn't need to waste her concern on Kayla, and as for the person who hurt Kayla, Charles would take care of it for her.
"That's her problem, it has nothing to do with me." Daphne restrained her emotions, her tone very cold.
Charles was afraid he had misheard. "What did you say?" Daphne didn't respond; she didn't like repeating the same sentence too many times.
"When did you become so heartless?" Charles seemed to be encountering her for the first time, his expression growing colder. "Even if you don't like Kayla, she's still a girl. After experiencing such a thing, do you really need to watch with such indifference?"
Daphne also became emotional. Her black and white eyes locked onto his cold gaze, she spoke straightforwardly, "If I were truly heartless, I would say she deserved it."
"Daphne..."
