Chapter 348 Daphne's Speculation
Mark stayed quiet, hoping Charles would think his signal was bad.
When Charles didn't hear anything, he checked his phone, saw he had full grid, and called out, "Mark."
Still no response. Charles hung up and sent a message instead.
Mark quickly turned off his phone. He was on vacation, so a day or two without his phone was no big deal.
Mark was glad he was single; otherwise, he'd have to check in with a girlfriend.
Charles never imagined Mark would be bold.
After sending the message, Charles put his phone down, and went to sleep.
Mark, suspicious of Charles's odd behavior, borrowed his dad's phone and called Daphne.
Daphne, busy with work, answered the unknown number calmly, "Hello, who is this?"
"Ms. Murphy, it's Mark." He couldn't outright betray Charles but needed to address something.
"What’s up?" Daphne asked.
"The surveillance system Jesse picked isn't great. Could you choose and install a new one?" Mark said.
Daphne paused. Mark usually didn't push after a refusal.
"Do you want me to pick it or deliver it?" she asked.
"Both, if possible," Mark replied. He didn't want her guessing.
"Alright," Daphne agreed, sounding more engaged than usual. "I'll come in a few days. Should I bring Charles?"
"Doesn't matter," Mark said. "Just say you picked the system yourself."
"Got it," Daphne said.
After hanging up, Daphne sent Mark a message.
But Mark's phone was off, so he missed it.
The next day, Daphne finished some post-holiday work.
Kevin messaged her about a get-together.
She usually agreed, but today was different.
"I can't make it; you guys have fun," Daphne said, leaving her study and glancing at Charles on the couch.
"Don't be like that," Kevin said, looking at Emma.
They wanted to see how things were between Benjamin and Daphne. If she didn't come, it was pointless.
"Busy with work?" Kevin asked, "Bring it along; Evan and the others can help."
"It's not work," Daphne said openly. "It's Charles."
She could go out with Lydia without worrying about Charles causing trouble.
But with Kevin and the others, given Charles's current mood, who knows what he'd do. She wanted peace.
Kevin looked confused. "Charles? What's he got on with it?"
Daphne gave him a quick rundown.
Kevin might be curious within their group, but he was tight-lipped outside of it.
"Could he be faking it?" Kevin wondered. "His last video seemed normal."
"I asked him to act like his old self," Daphne explained. "You guys have fun. Once Charles is sorted, I'll treat you all to a meal."
She had reviewed a lot of surveillance footage to gather material.
That footage helped Charles not slip up when he got back.
"It's no big deal," Emma took Kevin's phone and chatted with Daphne. "Just bring him along."
"Ask him if he wants to come," Emma said seriously. "Tell him I, Kevin, Benjamin, and Evan will be there. If he wants to come, great. If not, we'll reschedule."
Daphne hesitated.
Kevin urged, "Daphne, just ask him."
Daphne looked at Charles, who was watching her from the couch. After some thought, she asked.
Being cooped up too long might not be good for Charles's recovery.
"Kevin and the others invited me out. Benjamin from next door will be there too," Daphne said simply. "Do you want to go?"
"Will they not welcome me?" Charles asked seriously.
Kevin and Emma heard this. They exchanged a glance, both thinking, 'Charles is acting!'
"No,", Daphne said. "If you don't want to go, we won't. If you do, I'll take you."
Charles looked into Daphne's eyes. Selfishly, he didn't want to go. He wanted Daphne all to himself. But if he stopped her now, what about next time?
"Let's go," he decided. It would be a good chance to see if Daphne was afraid of ghosts. "They're your friends. I don't want you to miss out because of me."
"Really?" Daphne asked.
Charles nodded. "Yes."
Daphne agreed with Emma.
After setting the time and place, Daphne looked thoughtful and said, "If you want to leave once we're there, just tell me, okay?"
"Okay," Charles agreed.
Daphne nodded and was about to return to her study.
But Charles called out, "Daphne."
"Yes?" she turned to him.
"Can you stay with me when we meet your friends?" Charles asked, his eyes pure. "I don't know them, and I feel safe with you."
"Okay," Daphne agreed.
Charles smiled, looking pure and sunny.
Seeing him like this, Daphne was momentarily dazed. She couldn't help but think, 'If only Charles's heart is as pure as his smile.'
The current Charles was very different from his old self.
Sometimes Daphne wondered, could amnesia really cause such a drastic change in personality?
