Chapter 438 Family Status
"Those we have are not in paris,"
"Well, we are dating now, and soon enough, we'll be hitched. Everything's gotta come in pairs," Benjamin replied, picking stuff out like he owned the place, his chiseled face looking all noble and hot.
Daphne shot him a few glances before finally joining in on the shopping spree.
They were a pair, so their stuff should match, right?
They grabbed toothbrushes, towels, slippers, and pajamas together.
They pretty much picked out everything, couple-themed or not.
Then it hit Daphne: she used to think Benjamin was this cold, no-nonsense instructor, but now she saw he was a sweet, detail-oriented boyfriend. He got life and romance way better than she did.
"Did we miss anything?" Benjamin asked, pushing the cart with one hand and holding hers with the other.
Daphne looked at the cart and joked, "Aren't we here for snacks? How'd we end up with all this household stuff?"
"We missed one thing," Benjamin said.
"What?" Daphne asked, curious.
"A household item," Benjamin replied, all mysterious.
Daphne was confused. Wasn't the cart already full of household stuff?
"Hang tight. I'll go grab it," Benjamin said, ruffling her hair with a smirk. "Otherwise, you'll be embarrassed at checkout."
What could possibly embarrass her? Daphne wondered but didn't push it.
She'd find out soon enough, no need to bug him about it.
After they checked out and left, they drove back home with a car full of household items but not a single snack.
By the time they got home, it was past nine.
Benjamin started putting away the towels, electric toothbrushes, and other stuff.
Even though they had similar couple's items before, those were bought by someone else he arranged when they moved. He liked the ones they picked out together better.
"Benjamin," Daphne called.
"Yeah?" Benjamin turned to her.
"Didn't you say you were getting a household item?" Daphne asked, puzzled, seeing the empty shopping bags. "Where is it?"
"Do you want it?" Benjamin asked, a mischievous glint in his eye.
Daphne didn't catch on and said, "Let me see."
She was just curious about what could possibly embarrass her.
Kitchen supplies? But those were just utensils. Her cooking might not be as good as his, but it wasn't that bad.
"Hold out your hand," Benjamin said in a low, slow voice.
Daphne did as he said. As she waited, Benjamin pulled a small box from his pocket and placed it in her palm. Lowering his voice, he said, "With this, you can check on me anytime you want."
Daphne's curiosity vanished, and the item in her hand felt like it was burning.
She'd always been able to look at it directly, but now that Benjamin had handed it to her, it felt different.
"I've got something to do upstairs," Daphne said quickly, shoving the box of condoms back into his hand. "You keep it."
She tried to make a run for it, but Benjamin pulled her back.
She bumped into his solid chest, feeling her heart race.
"Running away again?" he said, his voice dangerously low.
"I really have something to do. Ask Jesse if you don't believe me," Daphne said, trying to wiggle free.
"Really?" Benjamin asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Yes," Daphne answered firmly.
Benjamin held her with one hand and pulled out his phone with the other to call Jesse.
Daphne couldn't see his phone and thought he was checking on HorizonTech Group matters.
It wasn't until she heard the phone ringing that she realized he was calling Jesse.
"Jesse is already asleep. You..." Daphne started to explain when Benjamin put a finger to her lips, signaling her to be quiet. "Given his routine, he should either be handling company matters or working out at this hour."
How did he know Jesse so well? While she was stunned, the call connected, and Jesse's voice came through the phone, "What's up?"
"Does Daphne have any work assignments recently?" Benjamin asked directly.
Daphne suddenly coughed.
Jesse, who was about to say no, paused. Knowing Daphne well, he quickly lied, "Yes, there's an urgent document Ms. Murphy needs to handle right now. Is she with you? Please hurry her up."
The corners of Benjamin's mouth lifted slightly. They truly were the most in-sync boss and assistant.
"Jesse's on the phone," he said, handing the phone to Daphne, watching her act.
Daphne felt guilty but didn't show it. "Jesse," she called.
"Ms. Murphy, the partner is urging us. Please confirm the document I sent you." Jesse's acting was spot on, living up to his title as the best assistant.
"Okay," Daphne said seriously. "I'll handle it right away."
After hanging up, she added, "See, I told you I had something to do. I wasn't lying."
Benjamin nodded in understanding.
"Can I go now?" Daphne asked.
"Go ahead," Benjamin said.
With that, Daphne quickly went upstairs.
Benjamin understood her very well, a hint of deep meaning in his eyes.
Once in the study, Daphne sent Jesse a message to thank him.
Jesse asked: [Ms. Murphy, are you in charge in your relationship with Benjamin?]
Daphne paused. How was she supposed to answer that?
Jesse: [Ms. Murphy, is he the one in charge?]
Daphne quickly replied: [No.]
How chould that be? She just didn't want to use that box of condoms right now.
[Maybe not now, but judging by your reaction earlier, it's only a matter of time.] Jesse replied, suddenly worried about Daphne's future. [Your family status is quite clear.]
To prove she wasn't, Daphne emphasized: [Really, I'm not.]
Jesse: [Okay, you're not.]
His response was extremely perfunctory. He had already decided that Daphne was afraid of Benjamin. If she weren't, she wouldn't have needed him to lie earlier.
Daphne stared at Jesse's reply, wanting to make him understand she really wasn't.
But if she explained, it would only make things worse. If she didn't, he had already made up his mind. What should she do?
While Daphne was pondering this, Benjamin knocked on the door. "Ms. Murphy, are you done?"
"No," Daphne said.
"Can I come in?" Benjamin asked again.
"Not right now," Daphne declined.
After saying this through the door, she seriously considered how to elevate her family status. She thought for a long time but couldn't find a suitable way. The only chance she had was related to her earlier attempt to escape.
Benjamin didn't take her response seriously, acutely aware that she wasn't really busy with work inside.
