Chapter 286 What If Charles Never Gets Better?

Emma paused her typing, deciding not to stress over it.

Since Benjamin was so good at taking care of people, they might as well hand Daphne over to him.

After drinking some water, Daphne sat on the spotless carpet, her eyes filled with worry and her expression slightly troubled.

Nighttime wasn't the best for making decisions or getting drunk.

Even someone as clear-headed as Daphne could get overwhelmed by emotions in such situations.

She couldn't help but think of Charles being injured, his central nervous system severely damaged, and the thought magnified in her mind.

"Benjamin," Daphne called out like a lost child.

To her, Benjamin was a guide, capable of anything.

He could solve all their problems, making them trust and rely on him without even realizing it.

Benjamin sat down next to her, glancing sideways. "What's wrong?"

"What if Charles never gets better?" Daphne hugged her knees, resting her chin on them. "How will I explain it to his family?"

He was the heir to the Lancelot Group, Marcus's favorite grandson, and the beloved child of Laura and Hayden.

If Brian concluded that Charles would never recover, she really didn't know what to do.

"Brian hasn't made a conclusion yet, so don't stress too much," Benjamin said rationally, knowing she was overwhelmed. "With his skills, Charles won't be in too much trouble."

Daphne looked up at him, her usually calm eyes now filled with confusion.

"Really?" she asked.

"When have I ever lied to you?" Benjamin countered.

Daphne thought for a moment and shook her head. Never.

"Go take a shower and get some sleep," Benjamin said, rubbing her head with a large, warm hand. "When you wake up tomorrow, I'll go with you to see Brian and ask about the situation."

"Okay." Daphne nodded.

"Can you stand steadily?" Benjamin asked.

"I can," Daphne said.

Seeing her stand up and walk towards the bedroom, Benjamin thought her guard was a bit too low.

"Daphne," he called out.

"What's wrong?" Daphne still looked confused.

Benjamin pressed his lips together. "Nothing. Go take your shower, and remember to put on your clothes before coming out."

After all, he was retired now and could protect her.

"Okay." Daphne turned and went to the bedroom.

She closed the door, grabbed some clothes, and went to take a shower.

Showering cleared her mind. As the steam rose, Daphne's delicate skin turned rosy, and her long, curled eyelashes were covered in mist.

Benjamin waited outside the whole time.

About twenty minutes later, Daphne finished her shower and came out.

She was wearing cotton pajamas; her hair was wrapped in a towel, making her neck look fair and long.

By now, Daphne was mostly sober. After letting her hair down and drying it a bit with a towel, she opened the door and walked out.

Seeing her with wet hair, Benjamin frowned slightly.

In such cold weather, why didn't she dry her hair?

"Benjamin, I'm fine now," Daphne said, trying to appear calm as she stood at the door. "You should go wash up and get some sleep."

"Come here," Benjamin said in a low voice.

Although puzzled, Daphne walked over.

Before she could react, she saw Benjamin take a hairdryer and start drying her hair.

Daphne was momentarily stunned, not knowing how to react.

Did Benjamin know what he was doing?

"Benjamin," Daphne called him.

"What's wrong?" Benjamin asked as he gently dried her hair.

He felt a bit nervous. After all, this was his first time drying someone's hair, and he wasn't sure if he accidentally pulled her hair or if the dryer was too hot.

Daphne took the hairdryer from his hand and turned it off.

The room immediately fell silent.

"I can dry my hair myself," Daphne said, still feeling a bit uncomfortable. "You should go rest early; you've had a long day."

"Okay." Benjamin didn't say much more. "Call me if you need anything."

"Okay," Daphne responded.

Benjamin looked at her a few more times, confirming that she was fine, before getting up to leave. Daphne saw him at the door and thanked him as he entered his apartment.

After they each returned to their own homes, Daphne closed the door and dried her hair.

She always felt that drying her hair was something only close people should do for her, like her parents, siblings, or lover.

When Benjamin did it for her, she felt a strange sense of discomfort.

After drying her hair, Daphne lay down on the bed to sleep.

Before sleeping, she checked her phone for any messages or missed calls and saw a Facebook Messenger message from Jesse.

Ulterior motives? Who?

She naturally asked: [Who?]

Jesse was still at home waiting for Daphne's reply.

Since Benjamin started working, Daphne no longer needed Jesse to pick her up, and Benjamin now did many of the things he used to do with her.

This made him feel a sense of crisis.

So when he saw Daphne's reply, he directly typed a name: [Benjamin.]

He was about to send the message but hesitated, thinking about how well Daphne treated Benjamin.

What if Daphne also had feelings for Benjamin? Wouldn't he be helping Benjamin confess?

For a moment, Jesse was conflicted.

He didn't know whether to send the message.

Daphne waited for a while without a reply and assumed he had gone to sleep. She put her phone on the bedside table and drifted into sleep.

Jesse didn't send the message, thinking he would talk to Daphne in a different way at the office the next day.

However, he never expected that Daphne and Benjamin wouldn't go to the office the next day.

The next morning, after messaging Jesse that she wouldn't be going to the office, Daphne called Brian to discuss going to the base.

Brian was reluctant. He had promised Charles not to let Daphne get involved in his matters, and if Daphne visited him, it would mean he hadn't kept his promise.

He was knowing knowing Charles's personality, and who knew how he would retaliate later?

However, Daphne was K.

He couldn't offend her! Brian felt helpless.

After weighing his options, he gave Daphne another answer. "I'll show you Charles's health data, but I can't let you see him."

"I won't see him," Daphne said, holding the phone. "Benjamin will."

Brian was stunned. Benjamin? Was it the Benjamin he knew?
