Chapter 276 The Situation Did Not Improve

"You can tell if he wants to see you by how he contacts you," Brian said, changing the subject. "When he woke up this afternoon, he asked me to tell you that things are settled between you two. From now on, you're strangers and won't disturb each other."

Daphne found it hard to believe. She pulled out her phone and sent a message to Charles on Facebook Messenger, only to find out she was no longer his friend.

Daphne was confused.

What was going on?

In her confusion, she dialed his number, only to find out she had been blocked.

She stood there, holding the phone, her mind spinning, unable to understand why Charles would suddenly do this.

Was he afraid she would worry?

"Ms. Murphy," Brian began, looking serious. "Charles is the CEO of Lancelot Group, admired and praised by many. He pursued you for so long without any response; he must feel his pride is hurt."

"I've also learned a bit about your situation," Brian continued. "He divorced you for someone else, and your relationship has been deteriorating ever since. Honestly, he didn't even sleep with another woman. He risked his life to make it up to you. Or do you want him to make it up to you for the rest of his life?"

Daphne replied calmly, "No."

"In that case, why are you still clinging to him?" Brian countered. "He's already risked his life to repay you. He wanted to make it up to you, but you rejected his advances. Now that he's as distant as you wanted, isn't it inappropriate for you to insist on seeing him?"

Daphne answered in her heart, 'It's inappropriate.'

However, she still felt that things weren't as Brian described.

"If you insist on hearing it from him directly, then as you wish," Brian said, seeing her stubbornness, and took out his phone.

Daphne looked over.

Brian's hand holding the phone was sweating; he seemed tense.

"Luckily, I came prepared," Brian said, opening a recording. "Here's what you want to hear."

As he finished speaking, the recording played from his phone.

"Tell Daphne that I've repaid what I owed her. From now on, we are strangers and won't disturb each other." Charles's voice was weak but clear. "I don't want any more entanglements with her, nor do I need her to do anything for me. I don't want to owe her anymore. I'm tired; our relationship ends here."

After the recording finished, seeing Daphne unresponsive, Brian played it again.

Daphne stood there, listening quietly. Each word seemed to pierce her heart, leaving her emotions in turmoil.

After the second playback, Brian started to play it again.

"No need to play it again, I heard it clearly," Daphne said.

"Don't you want to listen a few more times?" Brian asked casually. "What if I synthesized the audio?"

Daphne knew by the second playback that it wasn't synthesized.

It was Charles's voice, unaltered. He said it.

Daphne and Charles were at an impasse.

Daphne didn't know what to say.

Charles's words meant he didn't want her involved in his affairs anymore.

However, there was still a deal between him and Brian, a deal that involved her.

She didn't know if she should intervene.

"Ms. Murphy, if there's nothing else, you can leave after handing me the family consent form," Brian said appropriately. "I need to get back to my patient."

Daphne lowered her eyes to collect herself, then looked up, calm again.

She handed the family consent form to Brian. "Let me know when his condition stabilizes."

"Mr. Lancelot said he doesn't want you involved in his affairs," Brian replied dutifully.

Daphne's calm, beautiful eyes met his. "One piece of information, five million dollars."

Brian said, "I'm not that kind of person."

Daphne said, "Fifty million dollars."

"Alright," Brian said with a smile, "Although Mr. Lancelot doesn't want you involved in his affairs, you're asking about my patient's condition. In that case, you can ask as many questions as you want."

Daphne nodded and left.

Brian called after her, "Ms. Murphy, if you have questions, feel free to ask. I'll tell you everything I know."

Money could make Brian work harder.

Daphne swiftly got into her car and left the hospital.

When she got home, it was already midnight. Instead of sleeping, she checked Charles's phone. Even after hearing Charles's words, she still suspected Brian might have been deceitful.

She checked the time she was deleted and blocked as a friend—just after 6 PM. Brian called her around 7 PM.

So Brian was telling the truth. Charles had deleted her as a friend.

Thinking about this, Daphne felt a tightness in her chest.

The words she heard at the hospital replayed in her mind.

Logically, after Charles told her they wouldn't disturb each other and would be strangers, she should feel relieved. But why did she feel more oppressed and filled with indescribable emotions?

Daphne lay on the couch, rubbing her temples.

Amidst the complex emotions, she made a decision.

Before they stopped disturbing each other, she had to wait until Charles fully recovered and helped him deal with the deal with Brian.

Only then would they be truly even, and she could be at peace.

After sorting out her thoughts, she got up to wash and sleep. Before Charles's condition stabilized, he was safe with Brian. Even if there were sudden issues, Brian should be able to handle them.

She needed to stabilize his company now. Hayden was helping in Ivrea City, but Mark was unsure about some situations in Gedser.

Consider it a bit of interest for saving his life.

While she sorted out her thoughts, Brian was having a hard time.

After getting the family consent form, he headed to his medical base, feeling extremely stressed in the car.

Charles really knew how to cause trouble. If it weren't for the fact that this trouble could earn him some money from Daphne, he would have immediately picked him up and beaten him.

"Mr. Harris, what should we do about Charles?" Brian's assistant asked while driving.

"What else can we do? Wait until his external injuries heal." Brian felt this deal was a huge loss. "Make sure to keep this information confidential."

His assistant replied, "Understood."

Brian had medical bases both domestically and internationally.

Due to Charles's unstable condition and the need for time to recover from external injuries, Brian only took him to his domestic medical base.

Looking at Charles lying in the room, surviving on oxygen, Brian frowned for the umpteenth time.

Charles's condition hadn't improved.

What he told Daphne about Charles being out of danger was a lie.
