Chapter 449 I Know Benjamin Very Well
'Why does this feel like déjà vu?' Daphne thought.
Benjamin's eyes landed on the car key she just popped in, and he casually said, "You coming out on your own, or do I gotta drag you out?"
"I gotta go on a business trip," Daphne said, looking all serious, not a hint of a lie on her face. "I'm not sneaking off."
"Really?" Benjamin raised an eyebrow.
"Yep," Daphne said, standing her ground.
"Yeah, I don't buy it," Benjamin shot back, not wasting more breath on her.
Daphne had a backup plan ready to roll. "If you don't believe me, I can call Jesse right now. There's a project abroad that needs both of us, and he's already heading to the airport," she said.
Benjamin glanced at her empty hands—no phone, no earpiece. She wasn't pulling this out of thin air.
"There are contracts and documents for the project in the suitcase," Daphne added, showing she was prepped. "You can check if you want."
"How long's the trip?" Benjamin asked.
"Could be a week if things go smooth, maybe a month if they don't," Daphne answered, sounding legit.
Benjamin kept staring at her. He was sure she was lying, but her sincerity was throwing him off.
Logically, Daphne had no reason to sneak away. He wasn't a bad guy.
"Call me before you get back," Benjamin said, easing up, a hint of a smile in his eyes. "I'll pick you up at the airport."
Daphne let out a breath she didn't know she was holding. "Okay."
Just then, Jesse rolled up.
Seeing him pull in, Benjamin's deep, attractive eyes twinkled with amusement.
'Isn't he heading to the airport? Why is he driving here?' Benjamin thought.
While he was mulling it over, Daphne stayed cool as a cucumber. She had everything planned out from the get-go.
Jesse parked a bit away and walked over, carrying some documents.
Benjamin threw out a deliberate, "Jesse?"
"I'm here to take Ms. Murphy to the airport," Jesse said, his face as cold as ever. "We need to review some documents on the way."
Benjamin was still suspicious but had no proof. "Wouldn't it be easier to review them over the phone? Or on the plane?"
"The documents are on the cloud and need an internet connection," Jesse explained, his tone icy and firm. "Face-to-face is better than over the phone."
As they talked, Jesse opened his laptop and started discussing business with Daphne.
Daphne chatted earnestly with him. Their convo had no holes.
"Let's finish this in the car," Jesse said, closing his laptop. "If we don't leave now, we might miss the flight."
"Okay," Daphne agreed right away.
Jesse grabbed her suitcase. Watching their smooth teamwork, Benjamin stared at Daphne for a moment.
"I'm heading out now," Daphne said, giving Benjamin a hug. "I'll call you when I get back."
"Okay," Benjamin agreed, not stopping her.
After all, he had his own business trip to deal with.
Once they left, Benjamin got on the phone to book himself a flight abroad.
Daphne had no clue about this. As soon as the car left the villa area, she finally relaxed, not as wound up as before.
"Ms. Murphy, are you scared of Benjamin?" Jesse asked straight up.
"No," Daphne said, chilling in the back seat with him while the driver handled the front. "I'm just playing some games with him to spice things up."
Jesse was sure she was full of it; she was definitely scared of Benjamin.
"He probably knows you lied," Jesse said, hoping she could keep her cool. "What's your plan?"
"It's normal for him to figure it out. As long as he doesn't have solid proof, he can't do anything," Daphne said, knowing Benjamin's style. "He's all about evidence."
Jesse felt something was off but couldn't put his finger on it, so he let it slide.
He just said, "Then I'll cancel your ticket and have someone pick you up once we're out of the city."
"No need," Daphne replied firmly. "I've decided to go on the business trip with you."
Jesse was actually going on a business trip, and Daphne had only started planning after finding out. Last night, after seeing the condoms Benjamin bought, she hit up Jesse, telling him to pick her up if she hadn't called by 9 AM.
Jesse sensed something was up. "Did you two have a fight?"
New couples usually wanted to stick together, so why a business trip?
"No," Daphne explained, not hiding this part. "The engagement ring I ordered is almost ready. I want to see it in person and make any tweaks if needed."
Hearing this, Jesse felt a bit better.
He didn't say much about Daphne wanting to propose to Benjamin. As long as she was happy, it was all good.
"Ms. Murphy," Jesse suddenly called out.
"Yeah?" Daphne replied.
"I wanna ask you something," Jesse continued.
"Shoot," Daphne answered.
"If one day you see Benjamin with another woman, what would you do?" Jesse asked seriously.
"I'd check out what they're talking about. If it's business, I'd let it slide," Daphne said rationally. "If it's shady, I'd wait till they're done and then ask him about it."
She wasn't into misunderstandings and didn't believe that seeing was always believing. Being honest and sincere was never wrong.
"Are you worried about Benjamin cheating on you?" Jesse asked, his biggest concern.
"No," Daphne said confidently, her eyes serious. "He wouldn't."
Benjamin wasn't the type to pull that kind of stunt. His personality just didn't fit.
Jesse didn't know how to feel. He was relieved but also worried.
He was glad that after a bad relationship, Daphne could still trust the guy she liked and stay true to herself.
But he was also worried she might get hurt again, leaving him with mixed feelings.
"Don't worry. I know Benjamin well," Daphne said, sensing his emotions beneath his cold exterior. "If he ever messes up, I won't even have to do anything. Others will handle him first."
