Chapter 287 The Dominant Female CEO and Her Gigolo
Seeing he didn't respond, Daphne asked again, "Is he awake now?"
"He woke up for a bit this morning, but he's out again," Brian lied. He couldn't tell her the truth. "I'll let you know when he's stable. Can you come back then?"
"You're hiding something," Daphne said, sure of it.
Brian kept his smile, gripping his phone. He knew she wouldn't be easy to fool.
"Why would I hide anything?" His tone was calm, giving nothing away. "You can check. You'll find everything's fine."
Daphne stayed silent.
Brian's hand was sweating.
He was betting she wouldn't use her hacking skills.
The Daphne he knew wouldn't hack unless it was serious. But if she did, she'd find out everything.
"How's his recovery?" Daphne didn't push further.
"He gets his stitches out tomorrow. He's doing well," Brian said, not hiding this, "Don't worry; I'll take good care of him."
Daphne said, "I'll come over."
Brian was startled. Why was she coming over?
"I'm just coming on behalf of his family to check on his condition," Daphne explained, "I need to update Hayden on Charles's condition."
"Alright." Brian agreed.
After hanging up, Daphne and Benjamin headed to his base.
Brian made some emergency preparations.
By the time they arrived, it was already eleven o'clock.
Brian, dressed in a doctor's outfit with a warm smile, greeted them. He seemed friendly, but no one could guess his true thoughts.
Seeing Benjamin with Daphne, Brian felt this deal was a loss.
When he saw Benjamin on Butterfly Island before, he thought he was on a mission. Now he realized it wasn't so simple.
"Mr. Reynolds, you..." Brian left his sentence hanging.
Benjamin, knowing Brian's background, wasn't surprised he recognized him. "We're here to visit Charles. Is it convenient now?"
"Of course, but Charles's condition is special. You can only see him through the glass window outside the medical room. You can't go in," Brian said naturally.
Benjamin responded, "Alright."
A moment later, Brian led Daphne and Benjamin.
They walked through a high-tech corridor, passing two password-protected doors. When they reached Charles's door, Brian pressed a switch on the wall.
The middle part of the wall opened, revealing a large transparent glass window.
Charles didn't look much different from before.
His complexion wasn't as pale, but it still wasn't rosy. His deep-set eyes were tightly closed, as if in a deep sleep.
"Ms. Murphy," Brian said after seeing they hadn't noticed anything unusual, "Since Charles doesn't want too much contact, it's better if you ask me for updates. I'll call you. What do you think?"
Daphne pressed her lips together, not speaking. She still felt something was off about that day.
Brian asked again, "Ms. Murphy?"
"Alright," Daphne finally agreed.
Brian felt relieved.
After observing for a while longer, Daphne asked Brian for Charles's medical data, which he provided without hesitation.
After a series of checks, neither Daphne nor Benjamin noticed anything unusual.
Before leaving, Daphne, thinking about Charles, said to Brian, "If you need any help during the treatment process, feel free to contact me. I'll handle it."
"What about funding?" Brian asked.
"I'll cover it," Daphne replied.
"Good," Brian said, satisfied. "I like straightforward people like you, Ms. Murphy."
"Don't tell Charles about this," Daphne instructed.
Since Charles didn't want to be involved with her, there was no need for him to know. Once he recovered, they could go their separate ways.
Brian, already seeing the money coming his way, agreed readily. "No problem."
Daphne added, "One more thing."
"Please, Ms. Murphy," Brian said.
"Don't think about making another profit from Charles after he recovers," Daphne warned, seeing through his intentions.
Brian fell silent. Was it that obvious?
Seeing his paused expression, Daphne knew she had guessed right.
Brian, with his powerful background and talent, was the best in his field. But even so, his love for money was unimaginable.
Sometimes, she wondered why he didn't go back to inherit his family's billions but instead chose to make money outside. However, that wasn't her concern; she wouldn't think too much about it.
After leaving the base, Daphne and Benjamin had lunch before heading to HorizonTech Group.
When they entered the elevator, Benjamin reassured her, "Based on Brian's reaction today, he seems confident he can cure Charles. You don't need to worry too much."
"Alright," Daphne responded.
When the elevator stopped, Daphne and Benjamin walked out.
Daphne went to her CEO's office, and Benjamin went to his assistant's office.
Not only the people in the secretary department but also Jesse, who was arranging things with the secretary department, saw this.
Everyone was already gossiping about Benjamin, the tall, handsome, and charismatic new hire. Now, seeing their boss always with Benjamin, they became curious about their relationship.
"Jesse, is Ms. Murphy dating the new guy, Benjamin?"
"I see them together all the time, and they're always so close!"
"I suddenly think Ms. Murphy and Benjamin make a great couple!"
The gossip continued.
Jesse couldn't describe his feelings.
Although his emotions weren't particularly intense, he still felt a bit strange, as if he were being left behind.
"Jesse?" someone from the secretary department called him, "Why aren't you saying anything?"
"If it's not announced, don't gossip about it," Jesse remained serious and professional, without any personal feelings. "Finish the tasks I assigned you earlier and get them to Ms. Murphy for her signature."
"Got it," everyone responded.
As soon as Jesse left, they started a new round of gossip, this time about Jesse and Daphne.
Jesse ignored them. When he saw Daphne return, he brought all the contracts and documents that needed her signature and updated her on the work progress.
