Chapter 611 You Can Scold Me
"Eugene, how can you say that?" Yasmin snapped, her temper flaring. "Jesse tried to harass me, and I can't even talk about it?"
If it weren't for the chance to connect with Jesse, the president of HorizonTech Group, Yasmin wouldn't have bothered with someone as annoying as Eugene. Now, not only was Eugene not helping, but he was also causing her trouble. So frustrating!
"Watch your mouth," Eugene shot back, clearly ticked off. "Aren't you dragging my name through the mud by making false accusations?"
In Eugene's world, reputation was everything. Even if he thought Jesse was a pain and didn't like him, he couldn't stand the idea of him being labeled a harasser.
"I already said it was a misunderstanding," Yasmin snapped, unable to hide her anger.
Eugene's face twisted in annoyance.
Yasmin and Eugene started bickering.
"Eugene, I need to talk to you about Jesse," Elara said, giving Jesse a look before turning to Eugene. "Can we talk in private?"
"Say it here," Eugene replied, his face hard and defensive. "So you don't end up like Yasmin, accusing me of harassment."
Elara didn't mind, so she spoke clearly, "I hope you can approve of my marriage to Jesse."
"No way," Eugene shot back quickly, stubborn as ever. "Jesse can't marry a socialite; you're no good for him."
"What does Jesse mean to you?" Elara asked.
"He's my son; what do you think he means to me?" Eugene blurted out, his face sour. "I raised him. Shouldn't he marry someone who can manage the household?"
"I'll give you $20,000 a month if you stop meddling in Jesse's life. Deal?" Elara asked bluntly.
Eugene was thinking. After a moment, he suddenly asked, "What about the wedding expenses? Don't expect me to pay; I'm broke."
"She's marrying me, not marrying into our family," Jesse said seriously, effectively cutting ties with Eugene again. "As long as you don't mess with my life or cause trouble, you can have the money."
"Watch your attitude," Eugene grumbled, clearly unhappy.
Jesse pressed his lips together and stayed silent.
Eugene scolded Jesse again, treating him like the kid he used to boss around. "I raised you, and this is how you repay me?"
"Did you really raise me?" Jesse asked coldly.
"I raised you until you were five," Eugene responded self-righteously.
Jesse's eyes turned icy, but he said nothing more.
Even though Eugene and Rainey had raised Jesse for about four years before abandoning him, Jesse still sent them a few thousand dollars every month now. He really wanted to ask how Eugene could say that so self-righteously.
"If your mom and I hadn't abandoned you, would you have achieved what you have now?" Eugene went too far. "Your success is all thanks to me."
"Eugene," Elara couldn't help but interject as the conversation got more ridiculous. "Isn't that a bit much?"
"I don't want to argue with you," Eugene said, looking away. He couldn't bring himself to scold a delicate woman like Elara.
"Marry Jesse if you want. He's got nothing to do with me," Eugene said, clearly done with the whole situation, especially after hearing about Yasmin's antics. "Just don't forget the $20,000 every month."
With that, Eugene walked out. After a few steps, he turned back and barked at Jesse, still as rude as ever. "Remember to send me back tomorrow."
This time, Eugene really went back to his room.
The lounge was left with just Jesse, Yasmin, and Elara.
Looking at Elara's appearance, attire, and demeanor, Yasmin felt a deep sense of inferiority.
"Let's go," Jesse said, holding Elara's hand.
"Wait!" Yasmin called out, panicked, "Can we talk?"
"There's nothing to talk about," Jesse shot back flatly.
"Ms. Gonzalez!" Yasmin pleaded with Elara, now truly afraid, "You're a woman too; you should know what it's like to face cyberbullying. Can you please ask Jesse to say something nice about me when he clarifies things?"
"You bullied my boyfriend, why should I help you?" Elara retorted.
Elara could be soft-hearted towards people like Evelyn and the others. Although they were annoying, they never played tricks or plotted against her, nor did they cross her bottom line.
But Yasmin had gone too far.
"Aren't you afraid I'll get depressed and die from the cyberbullying?" Yasmin started to threaten, "If that happens, won't you regret your decision today?"
"First of all, we're just making a statement and clarifying things; we won't tell anyone to cyberbully you," Elara responded directly, standing there with an air of grace. "Secondly, when you were spreading lies online, why didn't you think about this?"
Yasmin suddenly couldn't say anything.
Elara continued, "Someone who gains attention through false rumors doesn't deserve sympathy."
"You're so vicious!" Yasmin spat, turning hostile. "You are so cruel!"
"If I were really vicious, your account would already be flooded by trolls." Elara was really angry about how Jesse was treated. "After we make our statement, you need to apologize to Jesse in your livestream."
With that, Elara took Jesse's hand and left. When they reached the parking lot, Elara hugged Jesse tightly, passing on her sense of security and warmth to him.
"Jesse," Elara called softly.
Jesse was as gentle as ever. "What's up?"
Elara sighed, "I'm sorry."
Jesse asked, "Why?"
"I shouldn't have taken it upon myself to offer money to your father to stop interfering in your life," Elara admitted, feeling it was a bit disrespectful to him, but she was really angry at Eugene at the time. "You can scold me."
"Elara," Jesse said, rubbing her head, a gentle expression softening his usually cold face. "I should be thanking you."
He wanted to say those things too, but he knew if he did, Eugene would just scold him.
"Don't you think I disrespected you?" Elara asked tentatively.
Offering money to buy Eugene off from interfering in Jesse's life sounded insulting. If Elara had taken more time to think rationally, she wouldn't have done such a thing.
