Chapter 424 Quarrel
Daphne reminisced about the instance when she presented Benjamin with the watch, at which point he inquired whether she desired to hear the narrative surrounding the antique timepiece.
At that time, she pressed him, but Benjamin didn't say anything more.
Later, she once asked Benjamin when he started liking her. His answer was related to that watch, but she didn't remember giving him a watch.
"When did that happen?" Daphne tried hard to recall but failed.
"It was many years ago, I don't know exactly when," Anouk said honestly. "But I can assure you, if you keep asking him, he'll definitely tell you his nickname."
Benjamin didn't fall in love easily, but when he did, it was for life.
Although it felt wrong to think this way, Anouk was really glad that Daphne had divorced Charles.
Had they not divorced, Benjamin might have remained in the organization forever, devoting his life and never loving another woman.
"Okay." Daphne planned to ask him again when she got back.
After a while, Henry and Benjamin came in from outside. Though it was unclear what they had talked about, Henry looked delighted.
Benjamin came to Daphne's side and asked her and Anouk to join him for lunch.
After lunch, Daphne and Benjamin chatted with Henry and Anouk for a while.
Around two o'clock, Benjamin's two aunts, Agnes Reynolds and Cecelia Reynolds, arrived. Both were dressed very fashionably, clearly looking like wealthy ladies.
However, Benjamin's family didn't like them much.
Their relationship used to be good, but ever since they frequently came to Henry's place to brag about their children and criticize Benjamin for being unfilial and never being home, Henry had little contact with them.
Henry asked irritably, "Why are you here?"
"Can't I come to visit you?" Agnes said with a smile, her tone gentle and polite. "We didn't get together for New Year's, so I thought I should come and visit you."
"And who is this?" Cecelia asked, her gaze fixed on Daphne.
Henry and Anouk said in unison, "My daughter-in-law."
"She looks familiar," Cecelia remarked.
"I think so too. If I'm not mistaken, she's the Daphne who made headlines recently for getting $3 billion in a divorce settlement," Agnes said.
"The one who scammed for money!" Cecelia exclaimed.
"Henry, Anouk, how could you be so foolish to let Benjamin marry her? Aren't you afraid being swindled?" Agnes scolded.
As soon as they spoke, the Reynolds family members all looked displeased.
Before Henry and Anouk could respond, Benjamin, with a cold and distant demeanor, pressed, "Apologize."
"What?" Cecelia said, not believing her ears.
"Apologize to Daphne," Benjamin repeated, his gaze sharp and cold.
"Why should I apologize?" Cecelia said, looking down on Daphne. "Everyone knows she got $3 billion from Charles. I'm not wrong."
Benjamin's expression turned even colder.
Before he could speak, Daphne stopped him. She stepped forward and said calmly, "You're right about that, but where's your evidence that I scammed him?"
Whether in the past or now, she could confidently say she didn't scam anyone.
She and Charles had a flash marriage, and neither knew each other well, so they signed a prenuptial agreement before officially getting married.
If either party had any objections to the agreement, they could end the flash marriage. Both had listed several conditions.
Daphne had one more condition than Charles: she wouldn't disclose her identity, family background, or past social circle to him. She just wanted to be an ordinary person.
Charles agreed, and then they signed the agreement and got married.
"$3 billion is the evidence," Agnes said mockingly.
"Watch your mouth," Henry snapped, his temper flaring up. The younger generation might be too polite to scold, but he wasn't. "Do you really think Daphne is like your kids, who only know how to cheat and deceive? Say one more word of nonsense, and I'll throw water on you."
Agnes and Cecelia were at a loss for words, glaring at Daphne.
Daphne met their gaze and easily overpowered them.
Daphne typically spoke little, but recognized using her identity was the most straightforward approach. "Let me introduce myself. My name is Daphne Murphy. The president of the Murphy Group is my father, and the president of the Phillips Group is my grandfather."
As for HorizonTech Group, there was no need to mention it.
"And the president of the Reynolds Group is your father-in-law," Anouk added.
Agnes and Cecelia hadn't expected this identity.
"Do you still think I need to scam for $3 billion?" Daphne proved her point with facts.
At this moment, Daphne suddenly understood something.
If she were really just an ordinary person without a family background or her own company, once she took the $3 billion, wouldn't she be seen as guilty even if she was innocent?
This reminded her of Daisy. She used to respect Daisy's thoughts but didn't understand them. Now, she truly understood Daisy's decision back then.
Agnes began again, her words dripping with sarcasm, "I always wondered why someone as ambitious as Benjamin would marry a divorced woman. Turns out he was after her family background."
Daphne's fist clenched instantly. She could tolerate insults to herself but not to Benjamin.
Benjamin's voice was cold, his gaze equally icy. "You married the heir of the Silverwood family for his background, didn't you? Does he know his daughter isn't his biological child?"
"What nonsense are you talking about!" Agnes roared in anger.
Cecelia started to enjoy the drama.
Benjamin then turned to her and asked, "Cecelia, does your husband know about the male models you keep?"
"What are you talking about?" Cecelia's face changed dramatically, immediately cursing, "Stop talking nonsense!"
"If you don't apologize to Daphne, I'll spread these two pieces of news," Benjamin said, his tone calm but terrifying. "And buy a couple of news spots. By tonight, your husbands should know."
"Benjamin! Stop slandering us!" Cecelia shouted anxiously.
"Look at the nonsense your son is spouting," Agnes scolded.
Benjamin glanced at his watch, exuding an air of nobility and coldness. "You have three minutes. If you don't apologize in three minutes, I'll do what I said."
Cecelia and Agnes were infuriated, their chests heaving, hesitating to curse further yet fearing Benjamin's online disclosure.
If it made the news, not only would their reputations be ruined, but the stock prices of the Jenkins family and the Silverwood family would also plummet.
Caught in a mix of emotions, they reluctantly apologized to Daphne.
"Is that an apology?" Benjamin asked, dissatisfied with their perfunctory attitude. "Or do you want to be falsely accused and only receive a half-hearted apology?"
