Chapter 316 Daphne's Interrogation

Daphne couldn't put her feelings into words.

Charles had always seemed honest to her. Even when he lost his memory, she still felt he was genuine.

But now, she couldn't stand the lying.

"Is there anything else he's hiding?" Daphne asked again.

"Ms. Murphy," Mark said, knowing this guessing game would lead to the truth, "I can tell you everything, but could you help Mr. Lancelot pick a surveillance camera first?"

He didn't want to betray Charles but also didn't want to deceive Daphne.

He sought a compromise.

"Surveillance camera?" Daphne was puzzled.

"The one at Mr. Lancelot's house broke," Mark said, avoiding the old excuse. "He needs a new one."

"Just get the same one and install it," Daphne said, not thinking much of it.

Mark tried to hint but couldn't be too direct. "If I buy it, it won't mean much. How about you choose one?"

Daphne paused, unsure how to respond. She had just found out Charles was lying, and now Mark wanted her to pick a camera.

"Will you tell me about Charles after I choose it?" she asked.

"Yes," Mark replied.

"I'll have Jesse pick one and send it to you," Daphne said, thinking it was routine. "Just pretend you don't know Jesse chose it."

Mark thought, 'That won't help.'

"How about you pick one yourself and bring it over?" he suggested.

"I have other things to do," Daphne said, not planning to pick one herself.

After a brief chat, Daphne hung up. Her mind was on Charles lying, not the camera.

She needed to talk to Charles.

"Benjamin, did you know Charles was lying?" Daphne asked.

Benjamin had asked this earlier. If he hadn't suspected something, he wouldn't have asked.

"Yes," Benjamin nodded. "I suspected it last night when I saw him eating pasta. A normal person who hasn't eaten all day wouldn't eat so slowly; if he had a poor appetite, he wouldn't react that way."

Daphne sighed in frustration.

Benjamin patted her shoulder, signaling her not to worry.

"I'll talk to him first," Daphne said as she saw the doctor coming out. "Sorry about last night."

The more she thought about Charles lying, the more upset she got.

Daphne walked into the room, looking at Charles with a complex expression.

"Daphne," Charles called out, gesturing towards the medical apparatus. "Can I skip this? It's rather uncomfortable."

"If you want to get better, listen to the doctor," Daphne said coldly.

Charles noticed the change in her attitude.

Thinking about Benjamin taking Daphne out earlier, he wondered, 'Did Benjamin tell Daphne about my mental recovery? If he did, it doesn't matter.'

Benjamin had no proof, and Charles could still pretend in front of Daphne.

"Charles Lancelot," Daphne called out, her tone cold, treating him like any other person.

Charles clenched his hand under the blanket but kept his face neutral. "What's wrong?"

"Why did you lie?" Daphne asked directly, her eyes showing reproach. "You had lunch and dinner yesterday. Why did you say you didn't eat? And why did you falsely accuse Benjamin of hitting you?"

Charles felt a surge of anger. 'Are you blaming me?' he thought.

"Answer me," Daphne demanded, like an adult scolding a child.

Charles glanced at her, then removed the treatment equipment, pulled the blanket over his head, and turned away.

He wanted to say it was Mark's idea, but he knew Daphne understood Mark's character. Another mistake, and she might really send him away.

So, he had to stay calm and think of a perfect plan.

Observing his behavior, Daphne refrained from lifting the blanket or consoling him. Instead, she spoke seriously, "If you don't give me a good explanation, I'll call your dad to take you home."

Charles didn't move.

"Charles," Daphne called again.

"If you want to send me away, just do it," Charles's muffled voice came from under the blanket, sounding dejected. "You don't like me anyway."

Daphne stared at the lump under the blanket. "I don't dislike you. I just want to tell you that lying is wrong. I don't know why you did it."

Charles stayed silent.

Daphne walked to the other side and uncovered the blanket from his head.

Just as she was about to ask something, she saw Charles's eyes filled with tears. He bit his lip and curled up like an abandoned child, helpless and scared but trying to hide it.

Daphne's cold attitude softened; she couldn't stand seeing people cry.

"Tell me, why did you lie?" Daphne tried to calm her tone.

Charles glanced at her, then stubbornly looked away, clearly not wanting to talk.

"If you don't speak, I'll leave," Daphne said. "I just want an explanation. No more lies."

"If I didn't do this, you wouldn't care about me," Charles finally spoke. "If you knew I ate yesterday, you wouldn't talk to me much or care about me after taking me back."

Daphne frowned, not understanding his thinking.

"I know you don't want me. You think I'm a burden," Charles choked up, playing on her emotions. "But I'll be good. I'll be obedient. I'll be sensible."

"Don't overthink," Daphne said honestly, unsure how to respond. "Since I brought you back from Brian, I'll take care of you. Go apologize to Benjamin later, okay?"

"If I apologize, will you like me a little more?" Charles asked, biting his lip.

"You first have to promise not to lie or deceive anymore," Daphne avoided the question.

Charles agreed. "Okay."
