Chapter 604 He Was Willing Many Years Ago
"Then let's skip the big wedding," Elara suggested. "Or maybe just invite the people who really matter, like Daphne did."
"No way," Jesse replied firmly.
Elara raised an eyebrow. "Why not?"
"You once said you wanted a super romantic wedding if you ever got married," Jesse reminded her, his sentimental side showing. "Even though my parents can't be there, I still want to give you that dream wedding."
A wedding was a big deal for a girl.
Jesse knew Elara wasn't like Daphne, who didn't care much for the whole wedding fuss. Elara was genuinely excited about it. Since she wanted it, he had to make it happen.
"Are you serious?" Elara felt a warm glow inside.
Jesse nodded. "Absolutely."
"Alright then, when we get back, let's get engaged first," Elara said, already looking forward to marrying Jesse. "Then we'll pick a date for the wedding."
"Sounds good," Jesse agreed. He'd already started meticulously planning how to propose to Elara. After seeing Daphne and Benjamin's grand proposal, Jesse was genuinely stumped on how to surprise and impress Elara.
Time flew by, and it was Saturday.
Early in the morning, Elara told Jesse she was heading out with friends and left early. In reality, she went to see Daphne and Alexander.
A little after nine in the morning at the Murphy Mansion, Elara started with some friendly chit-chat with Alexander.
"You didn't come here just to butter me up, did you?" Alexander, looking sharp, teased. "What's up?"
"I wanted to ask if you need a godson," Elara asked, testing the waters. Lately, Elara had sensed Jesse's deep longing for parental love, even though he never said it out loud.
Alexander and Daphne exchanged puzzled glances at Elara's unexpected question."If you do, would you consider Jesse?" Elara asked, her lively and pleasant demeanor making everyone feel at ease. "If not, just forget I said anything."
"Jesse?" Daphne was a bit taken aback.
Elara nodded, suddenly unsure how to proceed.
"If he wants me as his godfather, I'd be honored," Alexander said, knowing Daphne's bond with Jesse. "Who wouldn't want such a great kid?"
"Really?" Elara was surprised at how smoothly things were going.
"Of course," Alexander confirmed.
Daphne thought for a moment, still finding it a bit odd. "Why bring this up now?"
"There's something Jesse hasn't told you," Elara said seriously, her eyes earnest. "A long time ago, you already had a connection with him."
Elara knew what to reveal and what to keep to herself. If Alexander became Jesse's godfather, it would bring him immense joy. And she hoped that, in some small way, she could help make that happen.
Throughout the morning, Elara shared everything she could.
"Now that you mention it, I do remember something," Alexander said thoughtfully. "We were visiting a relative with Daphne, and on the way back, we saw a kid crying on a cold winter night."
Daphne blinked, searching her memory. Why didn't she remember?
"I didn't expect it to be Jesse." Alexander was surprised.
Back then, they had sponsored a bunch of kids who couldn't afford school and even set up a charity fund for it. But they had helped so many kids that they didn't keep track.
"Where's Jesse now?" Daphne, thinking of Jesse's stubbornness, asked Elara, "Should we call him over to talk about this?"
"He's at home," Elara replied. "Should I call him?"
Daphne and Alexander exchanged a glance.
"I'll call him and say my dad needs to talk to him," Daphne said, knowing Jesse wouldn't agree if Elara asked. "Let my dad bring it up."
Elara's eyes lit up. "Can you?"
The best way was for Daphne to call Jesse and then have Alexander bring it up. That way, Jesse would follow his heart and accept.
"Sure," Daphne took out her phone, thinking Jesse and Elara made a good match. "I'll call him now."
Jesse was at home thinking about moving when he got Daphne's call. After this busy period, he and Elara would have to go back to their jobs, and he needed to find a place closer to Elara.
Seeing the incoming call, Jesse quickly answered, "Hello, Ms. Murphy."
Daphne asked, "Are you busy right now?"
Jesse replied, "No, what's up?"
"My dad needs to talk to you," Daphne's tone was calm, but if Jesse listened closely, he could have heard a hint of softness. "He wants you to come over."
"Okay," Jesse agreed immediately.
After hanging up, he sent Elara a message about his plans and then drove over.
Seeing Jesse's message, Elara looked around the living room. "Can I hide somewhere?" If Jesse saw Elara there, he would definitely be suspicious, and she didn't want him to feel burdened.
Daphne and Alexander pointed out a spot where she could hear the conversation but wouldn't be seen by Jesse.
Half an hour later, Jesse arrived, looking the same as always. He greeted Daphne and Alexander, exuding his usual clear and cool demeanor.
"We called you over because we have an idea we need your help with," Alexander glanced at Daphne, testing the waters with Jesse. "We just don't know if you're willing."
Jesse didn't suspect a thing and remained respectful. "Go ahead."
Alexander cleared his throat, suddenly unsure how to start.
Daphne and Jesse both looked at him.
"I want to recognize you as my godson," Alexander said in a steady tone after organizing his thoughts. "Would you be willing?"
Jesse froze, a bit stunned.
"He wants a son to talk to," Daphne added for Alexander. "Someone to share his thoughts with."
"Daughters can share thoughts too." Jesse felt this was a bit sudden.
"Some things can be shared with daughters, some things are not appropriate," Daphne continued to speak for Alexander. "If you think he's okay and have the same idea, then agree. If not, just refuse. Lydia and I don't mind."
Jesse pressed his lips together. Deep down, he was willing. On that cold winter night, he had already been willing.
