Chapter 623 The Wealthy Person Behind the Scenes Was Never Him

"Look, we'll know if you're to blame once the investigation wraps up," Austin said, his tone flat. "If I owe you an apology, you'll get it. If not, you'll deal with the fallout."

Kaitlyn was a bundle of nerves, shaking all over.

"And if your husband finds out about this, do you think he'll still stand by you?" Austin added as he turned to leave.

A few years after Austin had chased Daisy to Gedser, Kaitlyn married into a high-status family, making her the envy of all her friends. But the family she married into had a strong sense of honor. If they got wind of this, her life would get pretty rough.

"What do you want from me?" Kaitlyn asked, her voice shaky.

Austin's expression hardened. "I'm giving you one last shot. Were you the one spreading rumors at Molly's school? Think before you answer." He wasn't interested in her family drama; he just wanted the truth.

Kaitlyn wanted to lie, but she knew Austin too well. He'd find out the truth soon enough. Still, she couldn't figure out why he suspected her. She hadn't been in touch with him or Daisy for years.

"Not gonna answer?" Austin was losing patience.

"So what if it was me?" Kaitlyn's eyes welled up, and her hands balled into fists.

Suspecting was one thing, but hearing it straight from her was another. Austin frowned, confused. "Why'd you do it?"

"Why do you think?" Kaitlyn's emotions finally burst. "I knew you before she did, and my family's way better than hers! Why'd you pick her over me?"

Kaitlyn thought she had a shot after their divorce, but Austin chose to argue with his parents and chase Daisy to Gedser. Daisy was just an actress; what was so special about her?

"Tell me, how am I any worse than her?" Kaitlyn's fists tightened.

"Family background is a given; she can't control that," Austin replied coolly. "But when it comes to personal qualities, you don't stack up."

"I've got a better education than she does," Kaitlyn rattled off her advantages.

Austin shrugged. "And?"

Kaitlyn was fuming at his indifference.

"Sure, you're more educated," Austin said bluntly. "But if you had the same background, you wouldn't outshine her."

"Is it so hard for you to admit I'm better than her?" Kaitlyn was baffled.

Austin looked her in the eye. "In my heart, no one compares to her."

Kaitlyn felt her heart sink. She couldn't grasp what made Daisy so special to Austin.

"You've got three days to apologize to Daisy and Molly in person," Austin said. "If you don't, I'll send a recording of this conversation to your husband's email."

"You recorded this?" Kaitlyn's eyes widened in disbelief.

Austin didn't respond and walked away. He hadn't recorded anything; he just wanted to mess with her head.

For the next couple of days, Austin stuck close to Daisy and Molly. On the third day, Kaitlyn showed up.

Seeing Kaitlyn, Daisy's guard went up. She couldn't bring herself to like her.

"What are you doing here?" Daisy asked, surprised.

Kaitlyn shot a glance at Austin, her eyes gleaming with mischief. "Austin asked me to come."

Both Daisy and Molly turned to Austin, their eyes questioning why he had called Kaitlyn.

"Don't get the wrong idea. I called her to apologize to you," Austin quickly explained, worried he'd get the boot if he didn't speak up fast enough. "No other reason."

Daisy was even more confused. She hadn't had any dealings with Kaitlyn for years, so why the apology?

Molly looked just as puzzled.

Seeing how protective Austin was of Daisy, Kaitlyn felt a swirl of emotions and suggested, clearly trying to cause trouble, "I want to talk to Daisy alone."

Daisy shot her down immediately. "I have nothing to say to you."

Kaitlyn looked at Austin, her eyes practically begging him to take her side.

But Austin, now completely loyal to Daisy, ignored Kaitlyn's plea and said, "We're going out. If you have something to say, say it here."

In other words, either apologize or leave.

Kaitlyn couldn't believe the once rebellious and indifferent Austin was acting like this.

"Make her leave," Daisy said, feeling Kaitlyn's presence was ruining the vibe. "I don't want to see her."

"Sorry," Kaitlyn mumbled, her voice so soft no one could hear.

Daisy looked puzzled. "What?"

"Don't push your luck!" Kaitlyn snapped, clearly having a big issue with Daisy.

Austin's brow furrowed.

"Don't think just because Austin dotes on you and protects you, you're some kind of high-society lady," Kaitlyn spat, unable to bring herself to apologize. "Even if Selene and Dennis accept you, you're still just a..."

"Kaitlyn!" Austin scolded coldly.

Daisy remained calm, her temperament steadied over the years thanks to Daphne. "Let her speak."

Austin was worried, knowing Daisy was probably angry and not easily appeased, her calm demeanor hiding a storm beneath.

"Go on," Daisy said to Kaitlyn.

"You're just an actress," Kaitlyn hissed. "Austin might fancy you now, but once he tires of you and stops loving you, you'll be nothing."Austin immediately turned to Daisy. "I'll love you forever. Tomorrow, I'll transfer all my assets to you and Molly."

Kaitlyn was floored by this turn of events.

"That's not necessary," Daisy refused Austin, then looked at Kaitlyn and said, "You got one thing wrong."

"What?" Kaitlyn responded instinctively.

"If Austin weren't in my life, nothing would change," Daisy said, deliberately provoking Kaitlyn. "The wealthy person supporting me has never been him."
