Chapter 601 Jesse is Angry

Before Jesse showed up, he told Elara to keep it simple if Rainey asked about their relationship. He didn't want her knowing too much and worried she might meddle like Eugene did or say something else.

"I get it," Rainey said, sounding all gentle and unassuming when she heard Elara's response. "That's good."

"We'll head back after dinner," Jesse said, trying to be proactive but still a bit distant. "Anything else you wanna talk about?"

They mostly chatted on Facebook or over the phone over the years. Living in different cities meant they rarely met in person. So, Jesse wasn't really used to it.

"Jesse, can you stay another day or two and tell me about your life these past years?" Rainey asked, hesitating for a long time.

Jesse paused.

Elara was surprised too.

They both noticed Rainey didn't ask Elara to stay, making it clear she didn't really like her.

"We have stuff to do when we get back, so we can't stay longer," Jesse said, the warmth from feeling cared for gone. "There's not much to talk about from the past."

Elara kept her head down, eating, confused. She hadn't done anything, so why didn't Rainey like her?

"Elara," Rainey said.

Elara looked up naturally. "What's up?"

"I want to talk to Jesse about some family stuff. Could you give us some privacy?" Rainey asked boldly, knowing Jesse was about to leave.

"She's family to me; there's nothing she can't hear," Jesse said before Elara could respond, his eyes cold. "Whatever you wanna say, just say it."

Rainey felt awkward and instinctively looked at Elara. This made Elara understand Rainey wanted her to give them space.

"It's okay, you two talk," Elara stood up, giving Jesse a reassuring look. "I'll just go for a walk."

"You don't have to leave," Jesse held onto Elara, protecting her.

"I'll be right outside," Elara whispered, calmly. "Don't worry."

Jesse stubbornly refused to let go.

Seeing this, Rainey looked displeased. She hadn't expected Jesse to like Elara so much.

"Come on, behave," Elara gave Jesse a look and whispered a threatening word in his ear. "If you don't listen, I won't talk to you when we get back."

Jesse still didn't let go. He didn't believe Elara's threat of not talking to him was serious, and he felt that Rainey's request to talk alone had something to do with Elara.

Just then, Elara's phone rang. Seeing it was Harry calling, Elara showed it to Jesse. "I'll take this call."

"I'll go with you." Jesse's attitude was clear.

Elara felt a bit indescribable. Being so protected by Jesse made her happy, but she really didn't care what Rainey thought of her or wanted to say to Jesse. She knew that no matter what Rainey said, Jesse would stand by her without hesitation.

"My dad probably wants to talk about Evelyn coming to the company to learn," Elara explained, forcing him to sit down. "You stay here and wait, don't follow me." She then stepped out with her phone.

Jesse wanted to follow, but Rainey stopped him. "Jesse."

He paused.

"You don't even want to talk to me alone now?" Rainey looked a bit sad, her eyes showing some complexity.

Jesse looked at her and slowly asked, "What do you want to say?"

"Elara mentioned a company," Rainey said tentatively. "Is her family running one?"

Jesse responded coldly, "Yes."

"You love her very much?" Rainey asked again.

"What exactly do you want to say?" Jesse didn't want to discuss his feelings with Rainey.

"Elara isn't right for you. You should find someone else," Rainey finally said, her voice a bit hoarse. "She seems to come from a wealthy family. You two aren't suitable."

"Even though you're the boss of a company, you're still just an employee," Rainey continued. "With a salary of about twenty thousand dollars a month, you could live well with someone else, but if you marry her, you won't be able to support her."

"That's not something you should worry about," Jesse said, not explaining further.

Jesse hadn't told his parents the truth about his work and income. They hadn't been good parents, and he wasn't foolish enough to tell them everything.

"She looks very pampered," Rainey added. "If you two are together, all the household chores will be yours, and you'll have to take care of her."

"Ms. Ward," Jesse even changed the way he addressed her.

Rainey paused, her eyes trembling slightly, looking like she was hit hard. "What did you call me?"

"You've only met Elara once. How much do you know about her?" Jesse's usually cold eyes showed some anger. "Is it appropriate for you to say that about her?"

"I'm just thinking about your well-being," Rainey insisted, with some other emotions in her eyes. "You should marry a virtuous wife. You're busy with work, and if there's no one to manage the household, what kind of life will that be? You won't even have a meal waiting for you when you get home."

"I know my own life. I don't need your concern," Jesse became distant. "I want to marry her simply because I like her."

"Jesse!" Rainey was a bit unhappy.

"You mentioned taking care, but honestly, she's the one taking care of me," Jesse felt helpless towards Rainey. "When I was studying, she was my friend who always taught me how to learn. Now, she gives me the greatest mental comfort and encouragement."

"What good is that kind of care?" Rainey spoke too directly. "After marriage, what you need is someone who can cook every meal and keep the house in order. That's life."

"What you're worried about won't happen to us," Jesse finally said. "Anything that can be solved with money, I can solve."

This simple statement left Rainey stunned.

"This is our first meal together in so many years, and it will be the last," Jesse concluded. "I didn't interfere when you abandoned me and married a new husband, and I hope you won't interfere in my relationship."

With that, Jesse walked out.

If he had had any hope for motherly love before, it was completely gone now. Rainey's comments, made without understanding Elara, left Jesse unable to like her at all.
