Chapter 637 It's Still Not Too Late to Beg
Laura accidentally hit the return key, and bam, the page flipped back to the home screen. She stared at the screen for a second, totally frozen.
Charles didn't notice and asked, "What's up?"
"Nothing," Laura said, handing the phone back without another word. She was shocked to see that both the wallpaper and lock screen were pictures of Daphne.
After a moment, Laura finally asked, "When did you take these photos of Daphne?"
"Yesterday," Charles replied casually, putting the phone away.
Laura pressed her lips together but didn't say anything else.
Later that evening, Charles was surprised to get a video call from Diana and picked up right away.
"Charles!" Diana's voice was sweet and playful. "Good evening."
"Why aren't you asleep yet?" Charles asked, his voice full of affection.
"I'm thinking about something," Diana said.
"What is it?" Charles asked.
"A question without an answer for now," Diana said seriously.
Charles was curious and leaned back in his chair. "Tell me about it."
"Louis asked me if I'd still like Lon as much if I met someone more handsome than Lon," Diana said softly, clearly troubled. "I've thought about it all day and night, but I can't imagine anyone more handsome than Lon and Louis."
Charles was taken aback, not expecting that question.
"Charles, do you have any good-looking friends over there?" Diana asked sincerely.
"Yeah," Charles answered honestly, "but none are as good-looking as you and Louis."
Diana's head drooped. What would someone more handsome than Louis even look like?
"Louis doesn't mean for you to worry about this now," Charles explained.
Diana asked, "Then when should I think about it?"
"When you grow up and become an adult," Charles said.
By eighteen, she'd be able to think independently.
However, Diana would find her answer before she turned eighteen. At seventeen, she'd meet someone special, and besides that person, she wouldn't want anyone else.
"It's getting late, you should go to bed early," Charles said gently. "You have to get up early for school tomorrow."
"Goodnight, Charles."
"Goodnight, Diana."
As the call ended, Diana obediently went to bed.
In the following period, Charles officially became Diana's godfather.
When Evan heard the news, he was a bit surprised. Standing in the yard, he looked at the people in the living room and said to Benjamin beside him, "Aren't you afraid Diana will only like Charles and not you when she grows up?"
"She likes good-looking people," Benjamin replied. "I'm not ugly."
In other words, Diana wouldn't dislike him.
Evan adjusted his glasses and asked, "Why did you agree to this?"
"She needs a senior friend," Benjamin said, his voice calm. "There are some things she can't discuss with us but can with Charles."
"Why not with Gavin and me?" Evan raised an eyebrow.
"You, me, and Daphne are all super close. She'd feel weird talking to us about some stuff," Benjamin said, always so caring towards Daphne and the kids. "Charles isn't as close to us, so she can open up to him."
Evan and the others tended to spoil the kids a lot. Charles spoiled them too, but he knew where to draw the line.
Benjamin and Daphne were new to this parenting thing, and they might not always get it right. If Diana ever felt upset, it was important that she had someone to talk to.
"What about Louis?" Evan asked.
"He's fine," Benjamin said, knowing Louis well. "He can handle himself without us meddling."
"Dad!" Diana came running out, all smiles.
Benjamin squatted down to hug her as she rushed over. "What's up?"
"Can Louis and I go to Charles' place for a few days during winter break?" Diana asked, her eyes full of hope.
"Sure," Benjamin said, fixing her messy hair. "Your mom and I don't mind."
"Yay!" Diana skipped back inside.
Evan adjusted his glasses and smiled.
Benjamin gave him a look, like, "What's so funny?"
"Just curious," Evan said, looking all scholarly. "How does it feel having your rival as your kid's godfather?"
"It's complicated, but it works," Benjamin replied.
What the kids did was their business; all he cared about was Daphne.
"Aren't you worried Charles will get close to the kids and then steal Daphne away?" Evan teased.
"If she could be stolen, she wouldn't be Daphne," Benjamin said confidently. He then changed the subject. "Are you planning to stay single?"
"I don't think so," Evan admitted.
Benjamin was a bit surprised.
"Because you all got married and had kids, my parents are starting to pressure me," Evan explained. "They said they'll give me one more year, and if I don't find someone, they'll arrange it for me."
Benjamin patted him on the shoulder.
Evan suddenly wanted to tease him, saying, "If I had known, I would have proposed to Daphne when she got divorced."
"You can still propose now," Benjamin said, with a playful challenge. "Want to try?"
Evan cleared his throat. "I just remembered I haven't given the kids their gifts yet. I'll go do that."
Evan quickly slipped away.
Benjamin followed him inside.
After giving the gifts, Evan chatted with Daphne and Benjamin for a bit before leaving.
As Evan left, Daphne looked thoughtful. "Did you think Evan was acting strange just now?"
"Yeah." Benjamin nodded.
"Do you know why?" Daphne asked.
"He told me his parents are pressuring him to get married and said he should have proposed to you when you got divorced," Benjamin said casually, pulling her into his arms. "I told him he could still propose now."
Daphne was silent for a moment, then smiled. Benjamin's playful teasing was as sharp as ever.
"Daphne," Benjamin called her.
She looked at him with innocent, serious eyes. "What's up?"
"If Evan had proposed to you back then, what would you have said?" Benjamin asked, purely curious.
