Chapter 224 Do You Regret Divorcing Daphne?

As he looked at the pile of evidence before him, Charles' brow furrowed almost imperceptibly, as if he couldn't believe Aubrey's mind could be so intricate and she had used it on such meaningless things.

At the same time, he fully realized that he had wronged Daphne all along.

"Arrange a meeting with Aubrey," Charles exclaimed.

Mark replied, "Alright."

As Mark left, Charles continued to stare at the thick stack of documents in his hand.

The impact he felt at that moment was greater than ever before. He hadn't imagined that someone could disguise themselves so well.

Aubrey was Edwin's sister, who he had never suspected. He never thought she would frame Daphne.

They were clearly two people who had nothing to do with each other.

Thinking about this, Charles raised his hand to his forehead, feeling a genuine sense of regret.

He thought of his doubts about Daphne, his questioning of her, his unfair treatment, and Daphne's explanations.

How had he treated her back then?

He hadn't believed her.

Thinking about this, Charles found it hard to breathe.

Daphne had been right. From beginning to end, the one who had changed was him. She had never changed.

The more Charles thought about it, the more stifled he felt in his chest. Eventually, it turned into unbearable pain.

When Mark came in to report, he saw Charles with his head down, staring despondently at the stack of documents. The atmosphere was so heavy. He was like a child regretting his actions.

Mark sighed. He didn't disturb Charles. Instead, he quietly exited and closed the door, leaving the space to him.

Life was a constant process of gaining and losing. Charles had to pay the price for his choices.

He and Daphne were destined to be apart.

For the next hour, Charles stayed in his office.

Mark intercepted anyone who needed his signature or had questions. He recorded the issues and waited to present them all at once later.

For Daphne, she might have felt heartbroken six months ago.

But for Charles, today was the day he truly felt the loss.

Fortunately, Charles didn't stay down for long.

By around six in the evening, he had finished reading all the documents and called Mark back in.

"How did the contact go?" Charles' face was cold, and his voice was hoarser than usual.

"Ms. Smith didn't answer the phone," Mark reported.

Charles gave a cold order. "Get in touch with Luke and tell him I need to speak with Aubrey."

Blake wasn't in the country, so contacting him wouldn't be very effective.

As for Edwin, he was busy with his affairs.

"Understood," Mark replied, then handed over a stack of documents and notes. "These are the papers you need to sign today and the questions from the directors and managers."

Charles took them silently, scanned through quickly, and signed them.

As for the questions, he provided answers one by one.

When he finished, it was already seven in the evening.

"You don't need to wait for me tonight. You can go home," Charles said in a flat tone.

Mark hesitated for a moment before asking, "Are you sure you don't need me to stay?"

"No need," Charles said calmly.

"Alright."

Their conversation was brief.

Charles had no intention of saying much today, not even engaging in their usual banter.

Mark felt a bit sorry for him. Although it was self-inflicted, he couldn't help but sympathize with him for a few seconds.

Then Mark continued to asked, "By the way, should we inform Ms. Murphy about this? It seems like she is also investigating."

"Not for now." Charles had already made up his mind. "Tell her after I resolve it. Consider it a small compensation from me."

He knew that, with Daphne's abilities, she would be able to find out and resolve the issue. But he still wanted to handle it personally.

After all, Aubrey's actions repeatedly exacerbated the conflicts between him and Daphne, ultimately making them strangers.

"Understood," Mark replied.

That evening, Charles arranged to meet Matt Hall, who was in Gedser for filming, for a drink.

In the private room of the bar, Charles drank one glass after another, and one bottle was already empty.

Seeing that he was about to open a second bottle, Matt stopped him. His voice was as gentle as ever as he said, "Drinking won't solve anything. What happened?"

Charles remained silent, his eyes deep and unreadable.

He still opened the bottle and poured himself another glass.

Seeing this, Matt didn't stop him. He rubbed the glass in his hand and said slowly, "You've never failed in your career, and even if you did, you wouldn't take it to heart. Your family is healthy, so it shouldn't be related to that either."

Charles finished his drink but didn't pour another.

"So, is it because of Daphne or Kayla?" Matt guessed.

For the past month, Matt had been busy with filming. He hadn't paid much attention to Charles' relationship, so he didn't know whom he had ultimately chosen.

"What kind of person do you think Daphne is?" Charles asked.

"I don't know her well," Matt said. He didn't judge those he didn't know well.

"But from what I can tell, she seems pretty good," he added.

Charles gave a self-deprecating smile. He thought even an outsider knew more about Daphne than he did.

"We're divorced," Charles finally said after a long pause, his voice hoarse.

"If you're divorced, then focus on living well with Kayla," Matt respected his every choice. "Everyone has to pay for their choices, so don't think about anything else."

Charles's long fingers gripped the glass as he said, "I didn't marry Kayla."

Matt looked puzzled.

He didn't quite understand what Charles was doing.

"It was all a scam when Kayla came back to me," Charles said in a slow, hoarse voice, his thoughts drifting back to the past. "If I hadn't felt responsible for her and had lived well with Daphne, would the outcome have been different?"

In that case, he and Daphne would have lived a warm life.

She would do as she pleased at home, and he would go to work to support her.

They wouldn't have argued, and their home would have been warm.

"If you truly wanted to be faithful, you shouldn't have started with Daphne," Matt said.

Charles didn't know how to describe his feelings. He only felt very terrible.

"Do you regret divorcing Daphne?" Matt asked him.

"I wronged her in so many ways," Charles said, his eyes downcast, his whole being filled with desolation. "I only learned the truth today. I realized that from the very beginning, I was completely wrong."
