Chapter 451 You Did Something to Wrong Him
"Alright." This time, Gavin kept his cool.
Deep down, he still thought Benjamin was a stand-up guy, not someone who'd mess around. But what he just saw? Yeah, that could totally give the wrong impression.
Benjamin found a café, and they grabbed a seat.
Gavin kicked things off, looking more serious than ever. "Spill it. If your story doesn't add up, I'm telling Daphne."
"The woman in the photo? She's a designer I met with. We were talking about my engagement and wedding rings," Benjamin said, straight-up, no BS. "I'm planning to pop the question to Daphne soon, and I wanted it to be a surprise."
Gavin frowned a bit; he bought the story. But the whole ring-on-the-designer's-finger thing? That still bugged him. A man putting a ring on a woman's finger—he should know that looked like.
"Got any questions, just ask," Benjamin said, noticing Gavin's unease.
"If it was just about the rings, you shouldn't have put the one meant for Daphne on her finger," Gavin shot back, no sugar-coating. "She looked pretty happy with it."
"It's a misunderstanding," Benjamin repeated.
The rings he had custom-made for Daphne—no way he'd let someone else wear them.
Gavin waited for more.
"The rings you saw were just samples," Benjamin explained, his mind on proposing to Daphne. "I had her try it on to show her the inner design was a bit off."
Daphne was a whiz at piano, fighting, and writing. She was super sensitive to stuff on her hands. The ring couldn't mess with her groove.
"As for the laughing, she was just teasing me, saying she didn't expect me to be so detail-oriented in loving someone," Benjamin said honestly, not wanting any mix-ups. "If you don't believe me, we can check the restaurant's surveillance footage."
"No need." Gavin already believed him.
As Benjamin talked, Gavin replayed the scene in his head. Every word matched what he saw.
Benjamin probably wasn't lying.
"So, Gavin, you believe me now?"
"Yeah, I do." Gavin deleted the photos, feeling a bit conflicted. "Sorry for jumping to conclusions."
"No worries. I'm just glad Daphne has a brother like you looking out for her," Benjamin said, no hard feelings. Then he asked the big question, "You haven't told her about this, have you?"
While he was talking with the designer, Daphne had video-called him. Benjamin ended the call and sent her a message. Her reply seemed normal, but he was still worried she might get the wrong idea.
"Not yet." Gavin was glad he held back.
"Keep the ring thing on the down-low," Benjamin said, his eyes looking extra intense. "I want to surprise her with the proposal."
"No problem!" Gavin agreed without hesitation.
With that sorted, Gavin felt a huge weight lift off his shoulders.
Gavin was seriously freaked out that if Benjamin really cheated, Daphne might never believe in love again. No one could fix that mess.
After their chat, Gavin headed back. To keep Daphne from hunting down Benjamin for him, he called her up to explain.
"Hey, no need to look for Benjamin. We already talked," Gavin said over the phone, trying to keep things light. "Wanna come hang out? I found some cool spots."
"Turn the camera around," Daphne said, eyeing the screen thoughtfully.
Confused, Gavin did as she asked.
He showed her the whole hotel room and asked, "What's up?"
"Come to room 503."
"You're here?"
"Yep."
Gavin thought it was a crazy coincidence. He didn't even hang up and headed upstairs with his phone in hand.
When Daphne saw the elevator, she was 100% sure it was the same hotel.
She hung up, got up, and opened the door, waiting for Gavin in the living room.
When Gavin arrived, he saw the door open and was about to knock when he saw Daphne chilling on the sofa.
"Daphne?" Gavin's eyes were wide with surprise. "What are you doing here? Business trip?"
'Or are you tailing Benjamin?'
"Handling some personal stuff." Daphne kept it vague.
"What kind of personal stuff?"
"Secret."
"Can't even tell me?"
"Nope."
Daphne was blunt. Besides Emma and Zoey, only Kevin knew about this.
"Alright." Gavin didn't push and switched topics. "Do you know where Benjamin's on his business trip?"
"Where?"
"In this city," Gavin said casually. "I just finished a meeting and bumped into him outside a restaurant, so we talked."
Daphne froze. Here? If she remembered right, Benjamin had no business here.
Why was he here? Could he be following her to figure out what she was up to?
The thought made her nervous. "Do you know when he's leaving?"
"Not sure, but definitely not in the next couple of days," Gavin said, then realized he might be spilling Benjamin's plans. "Why? You gonna see him?"
"No." Daphne bit her lip. "Can you do me a favor?"
"Sure."
"Have someone keep an eye on him for the next few days. If I'm about to run into him, let me know."
'What the heck?' Gavin was puzzled. If she weren't his sister, he might think she was up to something shady.
"I need to handle something without him knowing. Can you do that for me?" Daphne negotiated, using Gavin's availability. "Once it's done, I can help you with some of the Murphy Group's business."
"Are you cheating?" Gavin blurted out.
Realizing his mistake, Gavin quickly corrected himself, "I mean, why are you so scared of running into him? Did you do something wrong?"
"I want to surprise him, so he can't know." Daphne changed her story.
