Chapter 221 Have You Misunderstood?

A simple question left Charles speechless. He investigated Jesse merely to uncover his and Daphne's identity, but now that he had, he found himself bewildered.

Mark, for once, stood silently without any unnecessary words.

"I don't intend to do anything. I just wanted to resolve the doubts in my heart," Charles replied.

Not everything one did had to have a significant meaning. Sometimes, he just wanted to find out the questions in his heart.

Mark paused for a moment before asking, "When do you plan to return to Ivrea City?"

"We'll see." Charles did not provide a definitive answer.

In this conversation, Mark could clearly sense Charles' lack of enthusiasm and knew that he increasingly regretted his divorce from Daphne. However, it was done.

Not every mistake could be rectified, and not every wrong could be righted.

Only regrets remained between Charles and Daphne.

In the following days, Daphne continued with her life.

Charles, apart from sending her flowers daily, occasionally visited Murphy Group to see her.

He knew Daphne did not want to be disturbed by him now, but he needed to make the mysterious person directing Kayla believe he was still pursuing Daphne. He had failed Daphne in their marriage. He didn't want to afford to mess up this matter as well.

In the blink of an eye, it was the end of September. It had been five days since the mysterious person last contacted Jesse.

On September 29th, the person contacted Jesse again, instructing him to carry out the second plan during the team-building event at the end of the month. He wanted everyone at Murphy Group to know about Daphne and him.

Jesse informed Daphne about this.

That noon, Daphne and Jesse were at Murphy Group. After explaining the situation, Jesse asked, "Ms. Murphy, how should we handle this? It seems there will be quite a few people at this team-building event."

In a crowded setting, even if Daphne agreed, Jesse would never go through with it, even if it was just an act. Women's reputation and honor were very important, and he couldn't let Daphne take such a risk.

"You don't need to worry about this. I already know who it is," Daphne instructed him, "I'll go talk to her in person later."

Before the incident with Daisy, she wasn't entirely sure if it was that person, but now she was certain. Since she was sure it was time to confront her.

Jesse didn't ask further about her plan; she just asked, "Do you want me to accompany you?"

"No need. I'll go alone." Daphne declined.

That afternoon, in a well-appointed café, Daphne sat with a graceful and attractive young woman, Aubrey Smith, who had called her when Daisy had her accident.

As the coffee was served, Aubrey looked at Daphne, surprised, and said, "Honestly, I never thought you'd invite me out for coffee. Is there something you need from me?"

"Rather than coffee, I'd prefer to invite you for a drink because people speak the truth after drinking," Daphne stirred her coffee, speaking slowly and deliberately.

Aubrey smiled, giving off a very pleasant vibe. As if she hadn't noticed the underlying meaning in Daphne's words, she said, "As long as you're inviting, I'll drink anything."

"Really?" Daphne asked.

"Of course!" Aubrey replied casually, "You still haven't told me why you wanted to meet."

"A few days ago, when I visited Daisy, she mentioned wanting to invite you to dinner." Daphne began with some small talk. "She hasn't formally thanked you for helping her last time when you called me."

"That was just a small favor," Aubrey replied with a carefree smile, "There was no need to thank me."

"It might have been a small favor to you, but to Daisy, it meant saving a child." Daphne continued the casual conversation. "Tonight, she's hosting you at the place where she's resting, and she's personally prepared a table full of delicious food for you."

"Where is she resting?" Aubrey inquired.

Daphne paused her actions and met Aubrey's gaze. "Don't you already know?"

"What?" Aubrey looked completely puzzled.

"Austin went there because you tipped him off, didn't you?" Daphne confronted her.

Aubrey looked even more bewildered. "What do you mean?"

Daphne stared at her quietly.

"Have you misunderstood something? Or has someone given you false information?" Aubrey asked, "Since returning to Gedser, I haven't been in contact with Austin."

"Ms. Smith, there's no point in pretending anymore." Daphne's tone remained calm.

"I really don't know," Aubrey said, looking innocent.

If Daphne hadn't investigated after her initial suspicions, she might have been fooled by Aubrey's innocent expression.

Aubrey furrowed her brow and asked, "So, you called me out today because you think I tipped off Austin and are deliberately causing me trouble?"

"Yes," Daphne didn't want to waste time, so she replied directly.

"I swear, I didn't do it. You should stay away from whoever gave you this false information," Aubrey maintained her natural demeanor and said, "I don't know where Daisy is, and I certainly wouldn't tip off Austin. I have no reason to do so. I have no grudge against her."

"You may not have a grudge against her, but you do against me." Daphne was almost impressed by her acting skills. "You like Charles, don't you?"

Aubrey looked even more confused. "How could I possibly like Charles? If I liked Charles, why would I refuse my grandfather's proposal for an arranged marriage?"

"Aubrey, there's only the two of us here, so you do not need to pretend. The fact that I'm here means I've already confirmed it's you," Daphne said.

"I won't admit to something I didn't do," Aubrey said, standing up as if to leave.

Daphne grabbed her hand, applying some force. "Let's sit down and talk some more."

Aubrey furrowed her brow and looked at her.

Daphne's gaze remained fixed on her.

Eventually, Aubrey gave in. She sat back down and placed her bag on the table with some force, clearly annoyed. "If you want to say something else, say it quickly. After today, we will be done with each other."

"Ms. Smith, it's a pity you didn't go into show business," Daphne remarked, genuinely impressed by her disguise, "Your acting skills are truly commendable."

If Kayla had been as cunning as Aubrey, the previous incidents would have been even more troubling.

Daphne rarely trusted anyone easily, but she had almost believed Aubrey just now.

"Say what you need to say quickly. There's no need for sarcasm," Aubrey snapped, clearly irritated. Her reactions were exactly like those of someone who had been wronged.

"Kayla's car accident, the alleged loss of her innocence, my being attacked, my staying at the same hotel as Evan, and Jesse being bribed—these were all orchestrated by you, weren't they?" Daphne spoke calmly, exuding an air of authority.

Aubrey looked at her as if she were crazy. "Am I insane? Why would I do all that?"
