Chapter 700 Not All Affections Can Lead to Togetherness

Caspian gazed into the distance, enunciating each word, "I've thought it through."

"Then why haven't you told her?" Charles instinctively thought he was planning to be with Diana. "Or are you planning to stop her on the day she leaves?"

"Her marrying Mr. Hagen is actually quite good," Caspian said with a heavy heart, his eyes reflecting a complex emotion. "I had someone investigate him. He's humble, has good character, and is suitable in every way."

Charles paused; he didn't expect this.

Charles knew that although Caspian appeared to be a calm and indifferent person on the surface, he was deeply affectionate and possessive at heart.

Someone like that wouldn't easily let go of the one they liked.

"Haven't you understood this society yet?" Charles intended for Caspian to think a bit more. "What you know is only what others want you to know. How can you be sure your investigation is accurate? Most people don't reveal their true character; only their partner knows their true nature."

"I know." Caspian had considered all of this.

Charles was increasingly confused. "Then how can you be at ease with Diana being with him?"

"Daphne and Benjamin care about her more than I do." Caspian, because he cared so much, considered many things. "Even if it's an arranged marriage, their love for Diana would never let her suffer."

"What if..." Charles asked.

Caspian interupted, "There is no 'what if.'"

Not to mention Daphne and Benjamin, even Louis would never let anyone bully Diana.

And then there were Diana's suitors.

"Have you really thought it through?" Charles hadn't expected this outcome.

"Yes." Caspian nodded.

The atmosphere instantly became tense.

For the next five minutes, neither of them spoke.

Finally, Charles turned to Caspian and asked him a question, "Do you like Diana?"

Caspian paused, his hand on his leg unconsciously tightening.

"Your expression and words tell me you like her." Charles decided to be direct. "If you like her, why not accept her pursuit?"

"You misunderstand, I don't like her." Caspian didn't admit it. He knew that if he did, Charles would definitely tell Diana. "I know so much because she's your goddaughter. I want to put your mind at ease."

Charles asked him, "Really?"

Caspian relied calmly, "Really."

"Then I'll tell Diana you like her." Charles took out his phone, not listening to him at all. "If you really don't like her, then say something harsh to her, don't give her any hope."

"Charles..." Caspian frowned.

Charles didn't look at him and sent a message to Diana.

Watching Charles send the message, Caspian felt a surge of complex emotions.

He couldn't say harsh words to Diana. The only thing he could do was to neglect her, to coldly reject her.

"I trust my instincts." Charles's gaze fell on Caspian, reaffirming his belief. "You like her."

This time, Caspian didn't deny it.

Caspian took Charles's still-lit phone and retracted the sent message. After a moment of silence, he seriously admitted for the first time, "Yes, I like her, I like her very much."

"But not all likes can lead to being together." Caspian's eyes were filled with suppression, and his gaze was complex as he looked at Charles. "Just like how you like Daphne."

Charles was stunned; he hadn't expected Caspian to bring this up.

"She deserves the best in the world," Caspian's voice was very soft, as if it would shatter with a little force. "She should have a perfect life."

His existence would only be a stain on her life, making her happy life oppressive and unhappy.

Charles seemed to sense something. "Because of family background?"

"Not just family background." Caspian didn't reveal the ultimate reason, only saying, "Being with me would hurt her. You wouldn't want her to change from a happy and lively person to someone anxious and depressed, would you?"

"What do you mean?" Charles didn't understand.

If he liked her, how could she become anxious and depressed? Was he too old to keep up with young people's thinking?

"If you really care about her and want the best for her, don't let her like me." Caspian used all his strength to say this, and his heart sank at that moment.

Charles instinctively looked at the nearby flower bushes. "You should say this to her yourself."Caspian was puzzled.

Diana emerged from the flower bushes, shaking off the grass on her. "You guys talk so slowly, my legs almost went numb."

Caspian froze, his gaze lingering on Diana for a few seconds before looking at Charles, as if he hadn't expected him to call Diana over to eavesdrop.

"Don't look at me. Didn't you have something to say to her?" Charles was extremely calm.

"If you're embarrassed, we can go upstairs and talk slowly," Diana began to speak plainly. "You can say anything you want."

Caspian awkwardly said, "You misunderstood what I said earlier."

"I was just saying something Charles wanted to hear." Caspian appeared indifferent, but his stiffened hand indicated that he was in an uncomfortable state. "I don't really like you."

Diana, as usual, said, "Oh."

"If you don't really like me, then you don't." Diana walked over to him, took a chair, and sat opposite him. "I have something to confess to you."

"What?" Caspian asked.

"The night I stayed at your place, I was pretending to be drunk." Diana looked into Caspian's eyes as she said this. "Since you don't like me, I have a question for you."

Caspian's eyes lifted slightly. Pretending to be drunk?

"Why did you ambiguously hold me in your arms and say, 'Let someone else try holding you' when I said I was going out to hug someone else?" Diana's beautiful eyes blinked twice, and she lowered her voice, "Hmm?"

Caspian paused, his heart already in turmoil, but he quickly came up with an answer for her, "You're Charles's goddaughter. I had to ensure your safety."

"If it was because of that, you could have just said so." Diana didn't expose his lie, just changed the question, "Why did you hold me in your arms? That action, at the very least, requires an ambiguous relationship, right?"
