Chapter 6 Obsession
"I pity myself then," Daphne blurted out, "It's been two years of marriage and my husband doesn't even know my personality."
Charles: "Come home with me." He loosened his tie, took her bag, and grabbed her wrist, pulling her outside.
Daphne hesitated for a moment. Charles also paused. Their gazes coincidentally landed on the bag in Charles' hand.
Did he mistake her for Kayla? That was Daphne's first thought.
Charles didn't explain further and walked quickly.
This scene was witnessed by Kayla in the hospital room. The tenderness on her face disappeared completely, and she didn't even care about the red marks left by her fingernails in her palms.
After a while, the door of the hospital room was opened.
Kayla's friend walked in and asked with confusion, "Wasn't it Daphne who hired someone to hit you? Why is Mr. Lancelot still...?”
"It wasn't her." Kayla furrowed her brow.
At the very first moment, she thought it was Daphne's doing, after all, once she came back, she would replace her and become Mrs. Lancelot.
But judging from Daphne's reaction just now, things weren't that simple.
Charles got a similar answer on his end.
After the driver picked them up, Charles sat in the backseat with Daphne.
Before he could speak about today's events, Mark's call came in and he immediately explained the situation, "Boss, we've traced the IP address. The login IP address wasn't in Ivrea City."
"Understood." Charles' eyes darkened. He now knew that he had wrongly accused Daphne.
Amidst various mixed emotions, he glanced sideways at the person leaning against the car window. The sunlight shone through the half-lowered window and illuminated her face, revealing the faint fuzz on her skin.
In this moment, she no longer countered with sharp words, and she seemed to transform back into the gentle and obedient person she used to be.
"Daphne," he called her name, his face showing a hint of apology.
Daphne heard the content of the call and lightly said, "Mr. Lancelot, please don't tell me you want to apologize to me."
Charles: "..."
Can't she speak properly?
"Just because the IP address is not in Ivrea City doesn't mean I didn't harm her." Daphne's words were light and sarcastic. "What if I called someone else and had them bribe the driver?"
Charles knew she was just venting her anger. He wanted to apologize, but the words wouldn't come out.
He pondered for a while before finally saying, "I know it's not you."
If it were her, she wouldn't be so calm discussing this matter, nor would she analyze the authenticity of the evidence. It was his fear for Kayla's safety and Daphne's unusual behavior these past few days that had led him to wrongly accuse her.
"Oh," Daphne couldn't be bothered to respond. Charles asked, "?" Reminded of their intense argument in the parking lot and the hospital room, Charles took out a black card and handed it to her.
"This is the main card. If you're angry, feel free to use it."
"Okay," Daphne accepted it. Charles was surprised by how readily she agreed. "What about the other cards?" Daphne suddenly spoke up.
Charles felt a chill run down his spine and turned to her, asking, "What other cards? Due to your misconduct at the hospital, as a precautionary measure, you need to hand over all of your cards starting today."
Daphne's voice had no discernible emotion. "I'll return them on the day of the divorce."
The driver exclaimed, "!".
Charles asked, "?"
"What, unwilling?" Daphne retorted.
"Enough!" Charles became somewhat angry, and the atmosphere in the car suddenly became heavy. "Today's incident was my error in judgment, but if your behavior hadn't drastically changed these past few days, I wouldn't have made a mistake in my assessment."
Daphne asked, "?"
"Is that so?"
"Yes."
"Even without a change in your behavior, if you had learned about Kayla's accident and seen those chat records, you would have doubted me without hesitation, wouldn't you?" Daphne said confidently.
Charles wanted to argue back, but he realized she was right. Daphne threw the cards in her hand at him and felt a bit irritated, rubbing her temples with her fingers. What was wrong with her? How could she get upset over someone who didn't matter?
Didn't she already know that Kayla held first place in Charles' heart? Charles was dumbfounded by the cards hitting him.
Before he could say anything, Daphne's voice sounded again, but this time her words weren't directed at him.
"John, drop me off at the next intersection."
John replied, "Alright."
Charles felt a slight chill and asked in a low voice, "What are you doing?"
"Buying something that's good for IQ," Daphne had already calmed down considerably and spoke with the most indifferent tone, saying the most provocative words.
"Low IQ is contagious like a cold." Daphne's words angered him. He hadn't realized before that this woman was so good at sarcasm.
"Keep driving, don't stop." Mr. Lancelot gave the order, and John obeyed.
John naturally listened to him, and the car headed towards Queens Villa Block.
Charles held his breath in his chest. The guilt he had towards Daphne dissipated completely in that moment.
Half an hour later, the car came to a steady stop at the entrance.
Before Charles even got out of the car, Daphne had already opened the door and gone inside with her bag. By the time he reached the living room, Daphne had already returned to the bedroom.
He knew she had gone to change her clothes, so he waited there.
Ten minutes later.
Daphne changed into casual home attire, her thin bangs falling in a delicate way that made her face look even more beautiful.
She wasn't surprised that Charles was still there. After all, she knew why he had stayed behind.
"Go to the Lancelot Mansion at 6 p.m.," Charles said after she sat down on the sofa. "Prepare in advance, and I'll have John pick you up."
Daphne took the remote control from the side and turned on the TV. "I'm not going."
"Daphne!"
"You broke the agreement first."
Charles increasingly felt this person was a stranger. He asked, "Compared to accompanying you shopping or Kayla's life, which do you think is more important?"
Daphne opened a reality show program.
She was annoyed by the sound of Kayla's name now.
Before today, she had always thought of Kayla as a gentle person, one whose smile could heal. After all, she was his crush.
But she never expected her to be a scheming bitch with low methods.
"Of course, shopping is more important," Daphne answered his question.
Charles's gaze grew colder, and there was a trace of anger in his words. "Are you deliberately provoking me?"
Daphne remained silent.
"If you still want to get that money from the divorce, cooperate with me," Charles's patience was drained. "You're really making me angry. You won't get a penny."
