Chapter 246 Can't Hold On Anymore

Looking at the messages, Daphne replied to each one, including Charles's.

As soon as she finished, Charles called and asked, "Where are you?"

"In the car," Daphne answered directly and added, "If anyone asks if you helped Kayla find her phone, remember to say you did."

She always liked to be prepared for anything.

That person might not check, but just in case.

Charles wanted to ask more but thought Daphne must have her reasons, so he agreed. "Okay."

Daphne was a bit surprised.

With his personality, shouldn't he ask why?

"Did those people really find Kayla?" Charles was more concerned about this.

"No, they just suspect," Daphne's eyes darkened as she spoke, "As always, pretend you don't know anything and live your normal life."

"Okay," Charles responded.

"That's it." Daphne ended the call. "I'm hanging up."

"Wait." Charles stopped her.

It had been so long since he had a proper conversation with Daphne. This brief but peaceful talk calmed his heart.

Daphne asked flatly, "Anything else?"

Charles said, "Yes."

Daphne asked, "What?"

Charles said, "I want to meet you and have a meal."

Daphne rejected. "No time, hanging up."

This time, Daphne hung up without hesitation.

Charles looked at the gradually darkening phone screen, his deep eyes no longer indifferent but rather lonely.

Mark, sitting in the driver's seat, couldn't help but comment. "You shouldn't ask her out like that."

Charles looked up at him.

"You should book a restaurant in advance, prepare flowers," Mark said seriously, "Then find an excuse to get Ms. Murphy there. That way, you two can have a meal together."

"She wouldn't like it," Charles said confidently.

She didn't want to see him now, didn't like him.

If he did that, it would only make her dislike him more.

Mark blurted out, "She wouldn't dislike the method unless she dislikes the person asking her out."

Charles's expression suddenly darkened; Mark's words were blunt and harsh.

"Do you want me to tell Jesse about your advice on how to pursue Daphne?" Charles's cold gaze fell on the back of his head, clearly displeased.

Mark stiffened.

How could he forget that Jesse liked Daphne?

"I was just joking to lighten the mood," Mark said with his signature smile, "Don't take it seriously"

Charles knew he was cunning and ultimately replied coldly, "Drive!"

"Yes, sir." Mark obediently drove away.

On the way back, he occasionally glanced at the back seat, seeing Charles looking out the window in silence, feeling touched.

Since Charles found out Aubrey was the mysterious person, he seemed like a different person.

He started to consider things from different perspectives and think more comprehensively.

After hanging up on Charles, Daphne immediately called Kevin.

Seeing her call, Kevin got so excited that his voice got louder. "Daphne!"

Daphne was helpless.

"Daphne, where are you now?" Kevin bombarded her with questions, "Are you back?"

"In the car," Daphne answered briefly, "Are you still there?"

Kevin said, "Yes!"

Daphne said, "Okay, I'm coming over now."

"Great." Kevin happily hung up.

His pale face was covered in sweat, and he immediately reported it to Evan and Benjamin. "Daphne is done and is on her way here."

Evan glanced between him and Benjamin, finally pushing up his glasses and staying silent.

Benjamin had been lazily watching him since Kevin answered the call with "Daphne."

Kevin was stunned.

What was going on?

Why weren't Benjamin and Evan saying anything?

"Why aren't you reacting?" Kevin walked over, confused.

As he picked up a bottle of water to drink, Benjamin casually asked, "Are you close with Daphne?"

"Of course!" Kevin didn't catch his implication. "I was the first to know about Daphne's marriage and divorce, even before Evan and Zoey."

Evan lightly coughed.

Kevin, after drinking water, looked puzzled and asked, "Evan, do you have a cold?"

"No," Evan replied.

Kevin was stunned.

What was going on? Why was Evan acting so strange today?

"Let's play a few more rounds of tennis." Benjamin stood up, picking up a racket. "By the time we're done, Daphne should be here."

Kevin said, "Evan, it's your turn."

Evan said, "Benjamin probably wants you to play."

"I just played with Benjamin," Kevin, unaware of the seriousness, said simply, "You go."

"Evan is in better shape than you, so you should play," Benjamin said at a crucial moment, "You're too weak and need more practice."

Kevin felt a chill down his spine.

Why did it feel like Benjamin had set a trap for him?

It must be his imagination!

He hadn't offended Benjamin.

Kevin said, "Alright."

As they started playing, Kevin quickly felt exhausted.

He could catch every ball, but each one required great effort, and after a few hits, he was already panting.

His face was covered in sweat, and he bent over, hands on knees, saying, "I can't go on. I'm exhausted."

"We haven't seen each other for two or three years, and you're in this shape?" Benjamin was genuinely surprised.

Kevin's physical condition was always at the bottom of the team, but it wasn't this bad. Now, he was exhausted after just a short time.

Kevin stiffened.

This was bad!

"You should come to my base for training sometime." Benjamin was genuinely concerned about his health.

Kevin and Evan looked over simultaneously. "Base?"

"A training base I applied for with the organization," Benjamin explained, "It has retired team members and others."

Kevin was almost in tears.

It looked like he would be getting more training soon.

Benjamin asked, "What did Daphne say when she left?"

Kevin said, "What?"

Benjamin asked, "What was she going to do?"

"I don't know." Kevin didn't expect Benjamin to ask suddenly, so his eyes dodged. "Why don't you ask her when she gets back?"

Daphne had told him not to tell Benjamin about this.

He had to keep it secret!

Benjamin's eyes, skilled at reading people, stared at him. "You really don't know?"

Kevin said, "I really don't know."

Benjamin asked again, "Really?"

"Benjamin, please. Daphne told me not to tell you." Kevin couldn't withstand the pressure and slightly broke his promise. "If you really want to know, ask her. I can't say!"

In front of others, he would keep Daphne's secrets and never betray her.

However, in front of their captain, Benjamin, he felt he could reveal a bit.
