Chapter 399 I Don't Really Want to Know
"I already told 'em, and they don't care," Benjamin said, keeping a straight face, his knack for lying still top-notch. "They even said it's cool to have someone in your heart. If you really fall for 'em, they'll make sure she's only thinking about them."
Chris felt a bit thrown off.
He glanced over at Kevin and Evan, who weren't too far away, feeling puzzled.
It wasn't a shocker for Kevin to say something like that, but Evan? Even though he didn't know Evan that well, he could tell Evan was pretty reserved and classy. How could a guy like him say something so intense?
"What's up?" Benjamin asked again.
Chris didn't want him to catch on, so he said, "Nothing." He found it hard to describe his current feelings, knowing only that they were super complicated.
Benjamin saw all of this.
When the event wrapped up that evening, Sierra was still chatting with Kevin and Evan, and they were really vibing.
Chris walked over and stood next to Sierra, speaking casually, "Sierra, if you don't leave now, you might miss your curfew."
Sierra said goodbye to Evan and Kevin. After getting into Chris's car, she was still lost in the conversation.
Chats with people who had high emotional intelligence were always a blast. They could talk about anything from astronomy and geography to literature and everyday stuff.
Of course, Evan also shared some weird cases he had encountered before, leaving Sierra pretty amazed.
"Hey," Chris called out when he saw she was zoned out.
Sierra turned her head naturally, just like she always did, and asked, "What's up?"
"What do you think of Evan and Kevin?" Chris asked casually, then added directly, "Don't think they're awesome just 'cause Benjamin introduced them. Some people are great as friends but not necessarily as partners."
"I know," Sierra replied simply.
Chris wondered what Sierra thought of Kevin and Evan.
She then answered, "Both of them are great. If I were with Evan, I'd be well taken care of. If I were with Kevin, I'd have a lot of fun."
They were totally different people—one mature and steady, the other lively and cheerful.
"Are you serious?" Chris felt a bit upset but didn't show it.
"Why wouldn't I be? The person I like doesn't like me back. There's no point in holding on," Sierra said, half-testing the waters and half-advising herself. "It's better to let go of the past and look to the future."
But in reality, she couldn't do it. When she was young, Chris willingly let her boss him around. When she was in middle school and got bullied, Chris stood up for her, telling everyone she was his sister and no one could mess with her.
Chris had been a huge part of her life, there for almost every major moment.
But he didn't like her. She had known this for a long time, yet she still held onto a sliver of hope.
When Chris heard Sierra's words, he had an impulse. He wanted to ask her, 'Since you're planning to let go, could you give me a chance?'
However, he just asked tentatively, "Are you really over it, or is your family pressuring you to get married?"
Sierra paused. How was she supposed to answer that? She had just made all that up.
After a quick thought, she replied, "Both."
"Then why not pair up with me?" Chris said it so casually, like he had no hidden agenda. "We know each other well, your parents like me, and my parents like you. It'd be hassle-free."
Sierra's mind buzzed, and she was stunned, her heart in a whirlwind.
"What did you say?" she asked, not believing her ears.
"Well, don't you think I'm good enough?" Chris said in a joking tone.
This way, even if he got shot down, they could still be friends.
"I don't think you're good enough," Sierra said, scared that revealing her feelings would mess up their friendship. "Being with you, I'd always worry about you dating other girls."
"Who said I date other girls?" Chris thought this was a huge misunderstanding and quickly clarified, "I've never even held a girl's hand, except for that one time you saw, and those girls were forced on me. I sent them away after you left."
"Who knows if you're telling the truth," Sierra said, feeling anything but calm.
"Come to my place," Chris suddenly said.
"Why?" Sierra asked, confused.
"I'll show you the surveillance footage," Chris said.
To prove his innocence, he had specifically saved the footage from that day, just in case he ever got together with Sierra and needed to clear his name.
Chris drove towards his home, determined to have a good talk with Sierra.
He couldn't really watch her be with Evan or Kevin.
He couldn't compete with the heir of the Fisher family, who was Sierra's crush.
But what about Evan and Kevin? They had just met. His lifelong bond with her should give him some advantage.
After they left, Benjamin and Daphne also headed home. On the way, Daphne suddenly got super curious about something.
When did Benjamin start liking her? And when did Evan find out?
She asked these questions after they got home.
"Why are you so distracted?" Benjamin asked while changing his shoes. "Is it because I stopped you from going to the retirement home with Emma and Zoey?"
Wasn't that in the past?
"No," Daphne denied.
"Then what is it? Spill it," Benjamin said, leading her to the couch.
Daphne bit her lip, hesitating. "I'm curious about something."
"What?" Benjamin replied.
"When did you start liking me?" Daphne asked.
Benjamin paused, not expecting that question.
"Do you really want to know?" Benjamin asked again.
"Yes," Daphne said honestly.
"Kiss me and I'll tell you," Benjamin said in a deep, magnetic voice that was very pleasant to hear. "A proper kiss," he added.
Daphne hesitated for a while. In the end, she chose not to kiss him.
Benjamin couldn't keep this a secret forever. She would find out eventually.
Thinking this, she stood up, planning to go to her room to wash up and sleep, and said to Benjamin, "Never mind. I don't really want to know."
"Even if you don't want to know, you still have to kiss me," Benjamin said, pulling her into his arms.
As Daphne was stunned, he kissed her lightly.
