Chapter 596 How to Answer That Question
Elara's brow furrowed as she realized they were digging into Jesse's life. Before he could say anything, she jumped in, "If you have questions, just ask. Why snoop around in his business?"
Evelyn's lips curled into a teasing smile. "We never said we wouldn't ask. Or is your boyfriend hiding something special?"
"There's nothing to hide," Jesse replied coolly. "I'm just an executive assistant at a company."
Jesse always told people he was an assistant, except when he had to represent HorizonTech Group in official matters. To him, there was only one president of HorizonTech Group, and that was Daphne.
"Jesse, we're playing truth or dare," Aria reminded him. "No lying allowed."
An assistant couldn't just waltz into Fresh Harvest Eatery; it was obviously not the whole truth.
"Yeah, no lying," Evelyn added with a grin. "Tell us your real job and company."
"I'm the executive assistant of HorizonTech Group," Jesse repeated, his cold eyes unwavering. "My name's Jesse Thornfield."
Everyone was about to laugh but then realized something was off.
Evelyn's hired boyfriend looked surprised. "Are you Mr. Thornfield?"
"The president of HorizonTech Group?" Evelyn caught on too.
Everyone knew about HorizonTech Group and its capable boss and assistant. If Jesse were just an assistant, it wouldn't be a big deal, but he was also a significant shareholder.
Suddenly, everyone's view of Jesse shifted. Jesse wasn't just any assistant; he had an impressive status, skills, and professionalism.
"No wonder Elara kept you under wraps," Evelyn said, her mind racing. Jesse's abilities, status, and looks checked all her boxes. "If I had such an amazing boyfriend, I'd keep him hidden too."
"Elara, you're so lucky," Stella added, clearly envious. "You've snagged an incredible guy."
"I wonder if Mr. Thornfield is open to a second girlfriend?" Evelyn smiled. "Don't worry, I won't be clingy or demand exclusivity."
"Evelyn, have you no shame?" Elara was at a loss for words.
Evelyn could be a real pain, always stirring the pot, but her boldness was something Elara could never match.
Evelyn flipped her hair and smiled. "Shameless, that's me."
"Mr. Thornfield, what do you like about Elara?" Evelyn asked Jesse, her tone still sweet. "What made you say yes to her?"
"You've got it wrong," Jesse said, his lips barely moving.
All eyes turned to him.
Jesse held Elara's hand and said seriously, "It's not that I accepted her pursuit; I've liked her for years but felt too unworthy to go after her because of my status."
"I hope this nonsense ends today," Jesse added. "And I don't want any of you disrespecting Elara again." With that, he took Elara's hand and walked out.
Evelyn was still in shock. "Wait a minute!"
"Is there something else?" Jesse's tone was icy.
"What did you mean by what you just said?" Evelyn felt she must have misheard.
"Elara is the light and warmth of my youth," Jesse said naturally. "And she's the person I will protect with my life. If you bully her again, you'll have to deal with me."
After that, Jesse and Elara left the private room.
The room fell silent.
If anyone had been planning something shady before, they abandoned those thoughts now.
They understood what "the light and warmth of youth" meant. Most people had someone irreplaceable during their youth.
"Was Jesse telling the truth just now?" Aria asked Stella and Evelyn, her emotions a bit stirred.
"Yes," Evelyn replied, her eyes filled with an unreadable emotion. "I've seen that kind of look and attitude before."
Elara was very special to the young Jesse.
Evelyn had once had that kind of look and protection, too.
"Evelyn," Aria and the others were a bit worried.
"Why are you looking at me like that? I've long since moved on from the past." Evelyn still smiled naturally, but if you looked closely, you could see a hidden pain in her eyes. "I've let go of that person too."
Stella and Aria remained silent. They had sent their so-called boyfriends away were now sitting quietly, drinking.
"What do you plan to do about Jesse?" Aria asked.
"He and Elara are quite a match." Evelyn's mood shifted, her beautiful eyes showing a complex expression. "I wish them a long and happy life together."
Aria and Stella exchanged a glance and clinked glasses with Evelyn.
Evelyn took a sip, feeling a bit tipsy. "Why couldn't he be as persistent as Jesse?"
"Men like Jesse are rare," Stella sighed, rubbing her glass. "Most men easily give up their so-called love in the face of reality. One moment they're promising true love, the next it's all about power and status."
"Yeah." Aria's mood was also complicated.
"In the face of power and status, money is nothing," Evelyn uttered. "I should have known when he made that choice."
"Let's find someone better than him and make him regret it," Aria comforted Evelyn. "Let him know losing you was the biggest mistake of his life."
"Right!" Evelyn raised her glass and clinked it with theirs. "Make him regret it!"
Compared to the slightly tense atmosphere there, Jesse and Elara seemed more relaxed.
Elara sat in the passenger seat, thinking about what Jesse had said in the private room, and suddenly got curious. "Did you really like me for a long time?"
Jesse hesitated, unsure of how to respond.
