Chapter 517 Preference and Exception

Since then, Daphne hadn't hopped on that ride again.

Sometimes, Louis just couldn't wrap his head around why Daphne always listened to Benjamin.

When they rolled up to the McPherson family, he hit up Emma with the question.

"Why do you think?" Emma asked, helping him ditch his hat.

"I dunno," Louis mulled it over for a while but came up empty, so he took a wild guess. "Maybe Mom's got some dirt on Dad?"

"Nah, it's not that deep." Emma held his hand, her smile lighting up the room.

Talking about them always made Emma smile. "Your mom's cool with letting your dad take the wheel. She likes being taken care of."

Growing up, Daphne was always the one calling the shots.

She was used to looking out for others, making them feel safe.

But after she met Benjamin, she started leaning on him, and she even got a bit clingy, which was so not her before.

Sometimes Emma thought if Daphne had married someone else, she'd have to remind her not to lose herself.

But this was Benjamin, whom they all trusted.

Even if the world was ending, he wouldn't let Daphne down.

"Dad," Louis paused, then slowly said, "really loves Mom, huh?"

"His feelings for your mom are way beyond love." Emma's voice was soft, and talking about their story always felt warm. "Your mom is his lifelong favorite and his only exception. In this life, he's all about her."

Thinking about it, no one but Daphne could make that cold instructor, Benjamin, feel anything.

Daphne's awesomeness, independence, and all her talents even made Emma look up to her.

"So, should I stop trying to mess with him?" Louis suddenly felt like he might've been in the wrong.

"That's on you. Even if you mess with him, he probably thinks it's just a game," Emma said, knowing Benjamin's personality. "But Benjamin's pretty good to you."

Good? Louis racked his brain but couldn't think of a single time Benjamin was good to him. It always felt like Benjamin was setting him up.

"When Daphne just had you, he took care of both her and you until you were over a year old. Only then did he ease up a bit." Emma felt Daphne had picked the right guy. "He could've left most of it to the nanny, but he didn't trust them."

Louis pictured that scene in his head.

But he just couldn't match the gentle, caring dad in his imagination with the current Benjamin who was always messing with him; the difference was too huge.

"Let's go!" Emma looked at the door in front of them, ready for Louis to talk to Emery. "Whether Emery agrees to have a kid with me is up to you."

With that, Emma led Louis through the door.

Seeing Emery chilling on the sofa with a serious look, Emma naturally said, "Louis is here."

"The room's on the second floor to the right," Emery said, standing up when he heard her voice. Seeing Louis's cute face, he added, "If you need anything, just holler at me or Emma."

"Thanks, Emery." Louis was being all polite.

Emery just gave a slight nod, not saying much.

Emma led Louis upstairs.

In this new place, Louis didn't feel out of place; he adapted super quick.

While Louis was busy organizing his stuff, Emery pulled Emma aside, his deep, husky voice whispering, "Riding a motorcycle again? Did you forget what I told you last time?"

"How could I?" Emma grinned, poking his chest. "I remember everything you say."

Emery glanced outside, his eyes asking, "Then why?"

"Louis hadn't tried it, so I rode over to pick him up," Emma explained. "I went super slow, didn't speed at all."

"Don't do it again." Emery let her off easy in the end.

In the past, Emery never meddled in what Emma wanted to do, but ever since she almost got into an accident when someone sabotaged her during a race, he felt it was too risky.

Playing around too much could easily lead to trouble.

Luckily, she had mad skills, quick reflexes, and was in good shape, so she came out fine that time.

Back then, Emery thought, if something had happened to her, what would he do?

"Where's the other kid?" Emery got back to the main topic.

If he remembered right, Daphne and Benjamin had a boy and a girl.

"Diana went out with her uncle," Emma said without missing a beat. "I was worried Louis would get bored alone at home, so I brought him over."

"You can take him to meet Eddy next door." Emery was always thoughtful when it came to kids. "They're about the same age; they should hit it off."

Emma nodded, "Sure."

As they chatted, Louis had almost finished organizing his stuff.

When he came out, Emma and Emery were back to their usual selves.

Looking at the cute kid, Emery asked, "What snacks do you like? We'll take you to the store to get some."

"No need. I don't eat snacks." Louis's voice was adorably sweet.

Emery was a bit taken aback, 'A kid who doesn't like snacks, seriously?'

The neighbor's kid, Eddy Bowers, couldn't go a day without them.

"Then we'll take you to meet Eddy next door." Emery suggested, always looking out for the kids Emma cared about. "If you get bored, you can hang out with him."

"Okay," Louis replied.

Emma and Emery took him over.

Just as Eddy and Louis were getting to know each other, Louis's phone rang.

It was a custom phone from HorizonTech Group, just the right size for him.

Diana was calling, and he politely excused himself to answer.

"Louis!" Diana's voice came through, all soft and lively. "Why didn't you tell me you were going to Emma's house?"

Louis said, "You didn't ask."

Diana was so annoyed! But she held it in.

Louis must be ticked off because she went to hang out with Lon.
