Chapter 194 Can You Protect Me?
Charles felt a heavy sense of dread. Without saying anything else, he headed downstairs.
Rex didn't ask what had happened or if Charles needed any help. If there was a need for his assistance, they would call him.
"Charles," he called out to him, striding quickly to catch up.
Charles was preoccupied with thoughts of Daphne. "What is it?"
"If you don't step up your game soon, Daphne really might be out of reach," Rex reminded him with a playful note.
Charles glared at him sharply. Did he honestly need a reminder from Rex?
"You want me to help you win her back?" Although Rex enjoyed the drama, this was his brother, after all, "I can at least make sure she doesn't hate you."
Charles scorned the idea. ‘Is that what he called winning someone back?’ He refused without hesitation, "I don't need your help."
"Are you sure about that?" Rex asked once more.
Charles didn't respond and picked up his pace towards the stairs down the hall.
Not long after they had gone, a figure appeared in the room they had just left, scanning the entire room before leaving and making a phone call due to the time difference, and it was noon on the other end of the line.
Once connected, the conversation seemed casual, "How's everything going?"
"Everything's on track."
"Any complications?"
"None."
As soon as he said that the person on the other end hung up and called Kayla in Gedser.
Kayla's heart was racing as she answered the call, flipping open another phone and starting a recording, something Daphne had advised her to do. "Hello?"
The phone in her hand had been tampered with by the other person; if it recorded a call, they'd know. She needed to use another device.
"Keep an eye on Charles and Daphne's relationship for a while," the man instructed slowly, methodically. "In a month, check if Daphne is pregnant."
Kayla's heart pounded with fear as she responded, "Okay."
"Kayla," the man suddenly called her with an intimate nickname.
Her breath hitched at the name, a subconscious fear gripping her. Before she could respond, a gentle voice laced with mild laughter came through the call, "Stay good over there. You know the consequences of betraying me."
With that chilling reminder, the call ended. Kayla's hand clenched her phone tighter, knuckles whitening, palm damp with cold sweat. Even her breathing struggled to keep up.
"Understand?" the man on the phone repeated.
"I know..." Kayla mustered all her strength just to utter those two words.
The man seemed pleased with her reaction, and just before hanging up, he said one last thing: "Good girl."
The call ended abruptly.
Kayla's body went limp, collapsing into the chair.
At that moment, she considered giving up on working with Daphne. If that man found out that she had betrayed him, life would become unbearable. But then she remembered what Daphne had said to her before, and she hesitated.
As she pondered, her cell phone vibrated twice.
Instinctively, she picked it up and her eyes caught the text message.
Unknown: [Remember who you are. Don’t think you can get away from my control through Charles and Daphne. You should know what kind of person I am.]
The message chilled her to the bone, her complexion turning ashen in an instant. Her first thought was that he had discovered her actions. Her mind raced with what to do.
She thought about calling Daphne but feared he might find out.
Before she could decide, her other ‘frequently used’ phone rang. It was Daphne calling, and Kayla froze for a moment, indecisive about whether to answer.
After six or seven rings without an answer, Daphne thought Kayla might be asleep or in the shower and was about to hang up, planning to wait for Kayla to see the missed call and respond.
But Kayla answered just a second before Daphne hung up, "Hello?"
Now that she had picked up, Daphne got straight to the point, "Has he contacted you?"
Kayla’s heart skipped a beat. Why did it feel like everyone was keeping tabs on her?
"Why aren't you speaking?" Daphne, standing beside a pool at the back of the hotel, blended into the night. After waiting without a response, she pressed.
"He did..." Kayla’s voice was barely audible.
"What’s wrong?" Daphne sensed something was off.
Kayla was silent. She didn't know if she should share her worries with Daphne. After more than twenty seconds, Kayla still asked, "Can you truly protect me?"
"As long as you do as I say, I can protect you," Daphne promised her. "But the condition is that you can't hide anything from me."
Trusting Kayla was a risk but also the quickest solution. Daphne would prepare for all possibilities. That way, even if Kayla betrayed her without her knowledge, Daphne would have an alternative plan handy.
Hearing this, Kayla, amidst the struggle, chose to trust her and shared what had happened, including the content of the threatening message she received.
Kayla bit her lip, extremely afraid. She dared not think about the consequences of that person finding out she was working with Daphne.
Daphne was certain in her response, "He won't."
"Why not?" Kayla asked in disbelief.
"He mentioned you working with me and Charles, but you're only working with me," Daphne answered logically. She knew that person quite well and could make a decent judgment.
Hearing this, Kayla believed her, and she didn't even know why Daphne's words were so comforting. "Really?"
"He's just making a routine warning," Daphne analyzed, knowing Kayla was under a lot of stress. "Think about when you were in Ivrea City. Did he ever say anything like this to you?"
Kayla carefully recalled the past. Although her contact with that person had been sparse, he had still warned her not to harbor any ill intentions. She replied, "I think so."
"Mhm," Daphne responded indifferently.
After all, Kayla's mental fortitude was lacking. But that was normal. Kayla was an ordinary person without professional training. That person was ruthless by nature and given Kayla's betrayal, it was natural for her to feel paranoid.
It was like in marriages. The partner who cheated is always the more anxious one, fearing their spouse might uncover their infidelity at the slightest mention of the topic.
"Why would he ask me to check if you were pregnant?" Kayla's heart had eased a bit.
Daphne didn't hide the truth from her. "Someone locked me and Charles together in a room, and there was an aphrodisiac scent."
"So, did you..." Kayla began to ask hesitantly.
But then she felt it was inappropriate to ask and stopped midway.
"Do you care?" Daphne countered.
