Chapter 377 Misunderstanding
Mark had been stuck on this for ages, so he decided to shelve it and wait. By noon, Charles was still out cold.
During lunch, Mark asked Brian, "Hey Brian, any idea when Mr. Lancelot will wake up?"
Brian shrugged, "No clue. Probably not today. If you’ve got stuff to do, go ahead. I’ll let you know when he’s up."
"Got it," Mark replied.
The Lancelot Group was back in action. Even though the Gedser branch was under the old manager, Mark still had leftover tasks from last year to tackle. He couldn't let them pile up.
"Please keep an eye on Mr. Lancelot," Mark said, handing over his card with a smile. "Call me if he needs anything."
Brian, curious, asked, "Aren’t you worried I might harm him?"
Mark adjusted his glasses. "Mr. Lancelot once said something."
"What?" Brian asked.
Mark replied, "Anyone who harms him will pay a hundredfold."
Brian was speechless. If anyone else had said that, he wouldn’t care, but this was Charles. Despite his calm exterior, Charles could be brutally ruthless.
Brian had never seen Charles lose his temper.
"Thanks," Mark said as he left.
Brian looked at his food and sighed, thinking, 'Why did I get mixed up with Charles?'
Mark spent the rest of the day swamped with work at the Lancelot Group, trying to clear all the minor tasks before Charles recovered. This way, once he recovered, he could either stay in Gedser or go back to Ivrea City.
Meanwhile, Daphne, clueless about the situation, bought a gift for Benjamin with a note: "A gift for my love."
Benjamin looked at the pricey watch and then at Daphne. Compared to her gift, his seemed pretty lame.
"Don’t you like it?" Daphne asked, puzzled by his reaction.
She thought the watch was his style. Why wasn’t he reacting?
"No, it’s not that," Benjamin said, feeling awkward. This was his first relationship. "I was just thinking about what to get you next time."
Daphne thought, 'Next time? Another gift? What should I get you next time?'
Benjamin called her, "Daphne."
"Yes?" she replied.
Benjamin looked into her eyes, then hugged her, sharing his warmth.
Daphne was confused, thinking, 'Why is Benjamin hugging me out of the blue?'
"Is there anything you want?" Benjamin asked, loosening his grip a bit.
"No," Daphne said honestly. "I don’t need anything."
She had already bought everything she wanted.
Hearing this, Benjamin started brainstorming for Daphne's upcoming birthday, wanting to find something meaningful and special.
Daphne stepped back and handed him the watch again. "Try it on and see if you like it."
"It's okay," Benjamin said, sounding casual.
"Just okay?" Daphne asked, feeling a bit emotional.
"Yes," Benjamin replied deliberately.
"So, you've received better gifts before?" Daphne asked, trying to keep her cool. "Who gave it to you?"
Benjamin smiled and said slowly, "My first love."
Daphne's excitement vanished, replaced by a familiar sadness. She thought she had moved on from her past, but now she wasn't so sure.
Hearing him mention his first love still made her worry he'd leave her.
When it came down to it, would he choose her without hesitation?
"That's nice," Daphne said, looking away. "I have some things to take care of. I'll go now."
She didn't want to argue over a gift, but she felt a bit angry and wanted to say something impulsive like, "If you like her gift so much, why don't you be with her?" She held back.
Benjamin noticed her mood change and realized she misunderstood. He grabbed her hand as she turned to leave. "Daphne."
"What is it?" she asked, her tone distant.
Benjamin gently flicked her forehead.
Daphne covered her forehead, now genuinely angry. Not only did he not compliment her gift, but he also hit her. Did he think she wouldn't get mad?
"What are you thinking about?" Benjamin said, feeling both indulgent and a bit pained. "You are my first love, and the most satisfying gift is you. There's no one else, no ex."
He just wanted to tease her, to make her ask and find out that the best gift was herself. But he overlooked that Charles had divorced her because of his ex.
Daphne was stunned, her anger dissipating. "What?"
"You are the most important person to me, my one and only true love," Benjamin said, knowing she lacked a sense of security. "The most satisfying gift was your acceptance of my confession yesterday."
"Then why did you say 'okay' instead of 'like' earlier?" Daphne asked, calming down.
"Sorry," Benjamin admitted. "I wanted to tease you but forgot to consider your feelings."
"Really no ex?" Daphne asked.
"None," Benjamin replied.
Daphne fell silent. She didn't really care if he had an ex. What she cared about was being compared to an ex or, worse, being chosen second to an ex.
If it were Charles, she would have cursed bluntly. But this was Benjamin, who meant more to her than just a boyfriend; he was her guide from the past.
