Chapter 100 I Am Not Your Husband

"No. What's wrong?"

Sharon was so deep in thought about when to see Irene that she didn't even notice Alex.

"Sharon, I haven't visited you these past few days because work's been nuts. Uncle Sab cut ties with the Smith group just to mess with me. I've been drowning trying to fix it."

Sharon nodded, "Yeah, I get it."

Alex felt drained seeing Sharon's indifferent look. He'd been running on four hours of sleep a night, looking worn out, but Sharon just kept sulking.

In the past, Alex would have tried to cheer her up.

But now, he didn't feel like saying anything.

The only sound in the restaurant was the clinking of cutlery.

After dinner, Alex headed straight to the study, while Sharon drove to the police department.

Irene's case was still pending, so she was still in custody.

Irene looked pale and broken when Sharon saw her.

A flash of hatred crossed Irene's eyes. "Why are you here? To laugh at me?"

Sharon looked at her coolly. "I'm preparing to issue a letter of understanding. Even if you can't avoid punishment, the judge might go easy on you."

Irene was stunned, not showing much joy but looking wary.

"What do you want?"

"You mentioned something last time. Tell me more."

Irene fell silent. She only knew Ted and David were involved but didn't have details. She'd said it just to make Sharon suffer.

Seeing Irene's unpleasant expression, Sharon guessed she didn't know more.

"If you don't know, I can't issue that letter."

Irene almost killed her. If Irene couldn't give her the info she wanted, she wouldn't help.

Seeing Sharon about to leave, Irene hurriedly said, "Wait, I know something else!"

"What is it?"

"My dad stays out all night once a month, and the golden tiger head ornament on the third shelf in his study opens a secret room. There's a safe inside. I tried to open it but couldn't. There should be something important inside."

Sharon's expression stayed cold.

"The info you gave me is useless. If I follow him, I might get caught. I can't go to your house or get into his study," said Sharon.

Irene gritted her teeth and whispered, "I've thought about it a lot while in custody. The safe password is likely your mom's birthday."

Sharon frowned, her expression darkening.

"Do you know what you're saying?"

Ted's safe, with her mother Kimberly Sanchez's birthday as the password?

Irene sneered, "While in custody, I pieced together clues and found something off."

Seeing Sharon's disbelief, Irene whispered, "Believe it or not, I also know a secret about your mom. If you issue the letter, I'll tell you."

"What secret?"

"If I tell you now, will you still issue the letter?" Sharon asked.

Sharon didn't trust Irene, and Irene didn't trust Sharon either.

"You better be telling the truth, or you'll pay the price."

"Don't worry. You'll find the secret worth the letter."

Sharon said no more and got up to leave.

Irene's words implied Ted liked her mom. Ted, Kimberly, and Robert were college classmates. She could ask Robert to confirm before deciding whether to deal with Irene.

Sharon drove to the hospital, hurrying to the inpatient department, not noticing someone watching her from a distance.

Ava didn't expect to see Sharon at the hospital again.

After hesitating for a moment, she decided to follow her.

Sharon, lost in her thoughts, didn't notice Ava trailing behind.

When she reached Robert's ward, it was already past nine at night, and Robert was alone inside.

"Dad, where's Aunt Karen?"

Robert looked surprised to see her. "Why are you here so late? Karen went home to get me some clothes."

Sharon sat by the bed, her expression serious. "Dad, I need to ask you something."

Robert smiled. "What's up? Something serious?"

"You, Mom, and Ted were college classmates. Did he like Mom back then?"

Robert's expression changed, and he frowned. "Who told you that nonsense?"

Seeing his reaction, Sharon knew Irene was telling the truth. "So it's true?"

Robert sighed, "It's been so many years, and your mom and I are divorced. Why are you asking now?"

Sharon's eyes darkened. After their divorce, Kimberly quickly went abroad and was never heard from again.

"I just need to confirm something."

"Sharon, don't get involved in our generation's issues. It's all in the past. Just focus on your life."

Facing Robert's loving gaze, Sharon felt a pang of sorrow. If it weren't for the accident six years ago, Robert would have still been the president of Robert Pharmaceuticals, not a man who had to gauge Alex's mood.

"Dad, don't worry. I know. It's late; I'll head back."

As Sharon got up to leave, Ava quickly hid in the stairwell.

After the footsteps faded, Ava took out her phone and made a call. "Find out what illness Sharon's father has."

Sharon returned home after ten at night.

Alex was sitting in the living room, looking a bit upset. "Where have you been?"

"I went to the hospital to see my dad."

"That's all?"

Sharon changed her shoes and looked up at him. "What else? Do you think I secretly met with your Uncle Sab?"

Alex's face darkened. That was exactly what he thought.

"Sharon, I'm just worried about you. It's not safe to go out alone at night. If you want to see your dad, you can ask me to go with you."

Sharon smiled with a hint of mockery in her eyes. "Didn't you just say at dinner that you've been very busy? How dare I trouble you to see my dad?"

Alex massaged his temples, looking a bit helpless. "When did we start talking to each other like this, Sharon? We're supposed to be lovers, not enemies."

Alex wanted to fix their relationship, but Sharon never gave him a chance. If this continued, he didn't know how much longer he could hold on. His love for Sharon seemed to be fading with her constant cold words. But they had once loved each other deeply, and he didn't want them to end up as enemies.

Sharon chuckled and looked at Alex, speaking each word clearly. "Alex, isn't it you who caused us to become like this?"

She had been in love with Alex for eight years, only to be betrayed. Now, he had the nerve to question why she had changed.

Alex frowned and was about to speak when his phone suddenly rang. When he saw it was Ava calling, he paused.

Sharon also saw the caller ID, her smile turning more mocking as she walked past him and left.

Alex's breath hitched, and he wanted to reach out to stop her, but his hand clenched into a fist by his side, never moving.

It wasn't until Sharon's figure disappeared down the hallway that he answered the call.

"What is it?"

"Alex, my dad's in trouble. Can you..."

"No, Ava, I'm not your husband. I have no obligation to handle your family's mess!"
