Chapter 491 You Are a Useless Dad
Jerold looked at Leo with eager eyes, full of anticipation.
After a moment of eye contact, Leo finally nodded. "Alright, you sit tight here for a bit. I'll give her a call and see if she can come over."
Jerold's eyes lit up instantly. "Okay, thanks, Dad!"
He was convinced that as soon as Ayla got the call, she would definitely come.
Leo set him down and walked over to make the call.
A few minutes later, Leo returned with a grim expression. "Jerold, your mom is at the hospital right now. She can't come."
"Okay."
Jerold's face showed disappointment, but he tried not to let it show too much.
Ayla didn't want him anymore, and if he didn't behave, Leo might not want him either. Then no one would want him.
Thinking about this, Jerold felt a wave of sadness, and his eyes reddened.
Leo thought he was upset because Ayla couldn't come. He squatted down in front of him. "Jerold, don't be sad. Next time there's a sports day at school, Mom will definitely come."
"Really? But you are divorced. Will Mom still want me?"
Seeing his red eyes, Leo paused, then nodded firmly. "She will, I promise."
If Ayla no longer fought for Jerold's custody and calmed down, he wouldn't stop her from seeing Jerold.
After all, Ayla was Jerold's biological mother. Keeping them apart would only make Jerold resent him more.
"Okay."
Leo wiped his tears gently. "Alright, don't cry. If you win a prize, we'll take the certificate to show her after the sports day, okay?"
Hearing this, Jerold's attention shifted. "Okay."
Soon it was 10 AM, and after Connie said a few opening words, the parent-child sports day officially began.
The first event was the Three-Legged Race. The rules were simple: a child and an adult pair up, tie their adjacent legs together, and race to the finish line. The first pair to reach the end wins.
Seb and Demetrius participated in the race, while Sharon cheered them on from the sidelines.
Leo watched their happy family scene with cold eyes.
Soon, it would be him standing next to Sharon.
Once all the participants were ready, the referee shouted "Start," and everyone began moving towards the finish line.
Some parents and kids were in sync and moved quickly, while others struggled, often stepping on each other's feet and barely making any progress, watching as the more coordinated families pulled ahead.
The fastest pairs were Demetrius and Seb, and Jerold and Leo.
Jerold was determined to win the certificate to show Ayla, so he was very focused. His coordination helped him and Leo move quickly.
Demetrius wanted to win the five-star prize, which would be awarded to the family with the most stars at the end of the day. He planned to give the mystery prize to Sharon.
Both pairs moved quickly, with little distance between them.
With only 30 feet to the finish line, Jerold saw Demetrius and Seb slightly ahead and got anxious, speeding up.
However, Leo didn't speed up, causing them to fall out of sync. Jerold tripped and fell forward.
Leo quickly grabbed his collar and pulled him up.
"Jerold, you okay?"
Jerold's face was red with urgency. "I'm fine, Dad. Let's go, or we won't get first place."
But the more anxious he got, the harder it was for them to stay in sync, and they stalled for a while.
During their pause, Seb and Demetrius reached the finish line.
Sharon took out tissues to wipe the sweat from Seb and Demetrius' foreheads, smiling. "Great job, you two. Are you tired? Have some water."
She pulled out water bottles from her bag, handing the larger one to Seb and the smaller duck-themed one to Demetrius.
Demetrius took a sip and smiled. "Thanks, Mom!"
His face beamed with joy. He had earned five stars and was determined to win the mystery prize for Sharon.
He had told Seb about the mystery prize before the race, and Seb had eagerly agreed to help.
Leo and Jerold, who had fallen behind due to their mistake, didn't even make it to the top three.
After the race, Jerold looked sad, tears welling up in his eyes.
Leo knelt down to comfort him. "Jerold, don't be discouraged. There are still many events left. If we win just one, we can take the certificate to show Mom."
Jerold barely held back his tears and nodded. "Okay, Dad."
After comforting Jerold, Leo stood up and led him to the next event.
But no matter how hard they tried, they either lost to Seb and Demetrius or missed first place due to various mishaps.
By the end, Jerold was holding several second-place certificates, tears streaming down his face.
"We only got second place. Mom will be disappointed."
Ayla had always been strict with him. If he didn't win first place, she would be unhappy.
"It's okay. You did great."
Leo tried to comfort him, but it didn't help. Jerold threw the certificates on the ground, crying. "I didn't get first place. I can't see Mom. She'll be mad at these certificates. It's all your fault!"
"Jerold, it's okay if we didn't get first place. You..."
Before he could finish, Jerold pushed him hard.
Leo, who had been squatting, wasn't prepared and fell to the ground.
His expression changed, and he spoke coldly. "Jerold, who taught you to lash out when you don't get what you want?"
Leo's stern demeanor scared Jerold. Already upset, he cried even harder.
"I hate you! You're a useless dad, a bad dad. I want my mom! I don't want you! You're bad!"
Jerold's loud crying echoed across the field, drawing everyone's attention.
