Chapter 355 No Requirements for a Future Wife?
"Yesterday, you said meeting at a restaurant was too cliché. No matter what we plan, you always find something to complain about. Do you just not want to go on a blind date?" Maria asked, clearly annoyed.
Sophie pouted and admitted, "Of course I don't want to go on a blind date. If you hadn't pushed me, I wouldn't even consider it."
For Sophie, staying single wasn't the worst thing. She'd rather be alone than wake up next to someone she didn't like and spend her life with him.
"You're driving me nuts. You're already in your early thirties. If you don't get married now, by the time you're forty, no one will want you. Your dad and I are getting old. What will you do when we're gone?" Maria asked, her voice filled with concern.
Facing Maria's serious expression, Sophie nonchalantly replied, "I'll live my life. There are so many people who choose not to marry or have kids nowadays, and they seem to be doing just fine."
Maria gritted her teeth. "I'm done with you. When you reach our age, you'll understand that everything I do is for your own good!"
Sophie knew there was no point in arguing with Maria. They had already fought too many times over her age and blind dates. Now that she had compromised, there was no need to continue the argument.
"Got it. I'll go on the blind date, but if he doesn't like me or I don't like him, I won't agree to get married," Sophie said, trying to placate her mother.
"Just go on the date first, and we can discuss everything else afterwards." Maria replied, slightly mollified.
After lunch, Sophie drove to the racetrack.
The guy she was meeting for the blind date was named Dwayne Carr. According to Maria, Dwayne had been busy with his career, which was why he was still single in his early thirties. Most importantly, he was the only son of the Carr family, so he would inherit everything from the family. If Sophie married him, she wouldn't have to deal with family conflicts, and Dwayne's mother was said to be easygoing, making life more comfortable.
Sophie listened with little interest and didn't pay much attention.
An hour later, Sophie's car pulled into the parking lot in front of the racetrack.
As soon as she reached the entrance, a valet approached her. "Ms. Lee, welcome. It's been a while since you last visited," he greeted her warmly.
Sophie had been obsessed with horse racing for a while and often came to the racetrack to place bets, making a small profit. But she had been too busy with work lately to come.
Sophie smiled slightly. "I'm not here to watch the races today. I'm here to meet someone," she explained.
"Who are you looking for?" the valet inquired.
"The general manager of the Carr Group, Dwayne," Sophie answered.
"Mr. Carr is in private room 3 watching the races. I'll take you there," the valet offered.
Following the valet, Sophie walked through a long corridor and finally stopped at the door of private room 3.
"Ms. Lee, here we are," the valet said.
Sophie nodded. "Thank you."
The valet knocked on the door. After getting permission, he opened the door and announced to Dwayne, who was watching the races by the floor-to-ceiling window, "Mr. Carr, Ms. Lee is here to see you."
Dwayne turned to look at the door and saw Sophie standing behind the valet. His eyes flickered.
Their eyes met, and they both sized each other up.
Soon, Dwayne smiled. "Ms. Lee, please come in."
Sophie walked past the valet into the private room. "Mr. Carr, hello," she greeted him.
"Please, have a seat. Want something to drink, Ms. Lee?" Dwayne offered.
Sophie plopped down on the sofa closest to the door and said calmly, "No thanks, I brought my own water."
Dwayne looked a bit surprised, then raised an eyebrow. "Ms. Lee, are you worried I might have some hidden agenda?"
Sophie gave a slight smile. "No, it's just that meeting for a blind date in a place like this is a bit unusual. I'm just trying to avoid any hassle."
Dwayne nodded. He sat down across from Sophie. "Ms. Lee, I apologize for the location. I usually don't have much free time, and today one of my horses is racing, so I arranged to meet you here. I hope you don't mind," Dwayne explained.
Sophie took a good look at Dwayne. He was dressed casually, tall and long-legged. Even sitting down, he seemed taller than her. He wasn't particularly handsome, but his features were well-proportioned, and he had a gentle vibe, making a good first impression.
"I get it. Mr. Carr. I don't mind. Let's get this blind date started," Sophie said.
As soon as she finished speaking, Dwayne couldn't help but laugh.
Seeing Sophie looking at him in confusion, he quickly waved his hand. "Ms. Lee, I'm sorry. It's just that you were so serious about starting the blind date that I found it amusing."
Sophie pursed her lips. "Mr. Carr, I think that since this is a blind date, we should get straight to the point. But since you want to watch the races, you probably don't have much time for the date."
Seeing a hint of displeasure in Sophie's eyes, Dwayne realized he had gone too far.
He cleared his throat, his expression becoming serious. "Ms. Lee, let me reintroduce myself. I'm Dwayne Carr. I'm 6'5", weigh 165 pounds, and have a Business Administration degree from Sapphire Sky University. I don't smoke, drink moderately, have no bad habits, and I'm in good health..."
Sophie interrupted him, feeling a headache coming on. "Mr. Carr, you don't need to say all that. It's all in your profile. You basically meet my criteria for a blind date. Just tell me what you're looking for in a partner."
Dwayne thought for a moment, then smiled at her. "Ms. Lee, I'm very satisfied with you. If you feel the same way about me, I think we can take things further."
Meeting his smiling eyes, Sophie was momentarily stunned, then frowned. "Mr. Carr, don't you have any specific requirements for your future wife?"
Dwayne's smile deepened. "Ms. Lee, actually, I was the one who initiated this blind date."
Sophie was surprised and didn't quite understand what he meant.
Dwayne explained, "We met once at a party. You might not remember. Back then, a waiter accidentally tripped, spilling all the drinks onto a guest attending the banquet. The guest began to give the waiter a hard time, but you intervened to rescue the waiter from the predicament. That's when I noticed you. Later, I heard Mr. Smith was pursuing you, and you seemed to be interested in him, so I didn't follow up. A few days ago, when my mom set up a blind date for me, I saw your photo and arranged this meeting."
Sophie frowned, having no recollection of the event.
"Sorry, I forgot," she admitted.
"It's okay. Would you be willing to get to know each other better?" Dwayne asked.
Sophie was silent for a few seconds, then looked directly at Dwayne and shook her head. "Mr. Carr, I don't think we're suitable."
Dwayne was surprised. "Can I ask why?"
Sophie replied, "Because I don't feel like you're genuinely interested in dating me."
If she really mattered to him, he wouldn't have arranged their blind date at a racetrack, and he wouldn't have made her fit into his schedule.
