Chapter 615 An Agreement, More Important Than a Human Life?
Sharon glanced at her, "What are you talking about? Let's eat. I made your favorite dish today."
Sophie nodded, "Alright."
During dinner, Seb turned to Randy, "So, when are you heading back to the company?"
Randy had been away from the Smith Group for almost a month now. If this continued, the people he had trained might end up under someone else's command.
Hearing this, Randy paused, glancing instinctively at Sophie sitting across from him.
Seeing that Sophie didn't even look his way, Randy was silent for a moment before lowering his eyes and saying, "I'll go back in a few days."
Seb didn't press further. After all, Randy was now the president of the Smith Group, and he couldn't treat him like a subordinate anymore.
Halfway through the meal, Randy's phone suddenly rang.
Seeing it was Delbert, Randy frowned and hung up immediately.
But the caller persisted, ringing several times in a row, drawing the attention of everyone around.
Randy picked up the phone and said, "It might be something urgent."
He got up and walked to the side to answer, lowering his voice, "Delbert, I'm busy right now. Stop calling."
"Randy, Electra tried to kill herself. She's in the emergency room now, losing a lot of blood. The doctors say her life is in danger."
Randy sneered, "Couldn't get her way before, so now she's trying to play the victim? Her situation has nothing to do with me!"
With that, Randy hung up the phone.
As he turned, Delbert sent a text message.
[I'm at Evergreen Hospital. Come if you can live with your conscience.]
Randy's grip on his phone tightened, his knuckles turning white. After a few seconds, he deleted the message with a blank expression.
Though he didn't plan to go, Randy found himself losing his appetite.
He had been friends with Electra for years. Even if he didn't love her, he didn't want anything bad to happen to her as a friend.
After dinner, Sophie said goodbye to Sharon and Seb and left.
As she reached the door, her phone rang.
Seeing it was Saul, Sophie was surprised.
Since they met, Saul had only contacted her through Facebook, never calling directly.
As soon as she answered, Saul's anxious voice came through, "Sophie, where are you right now?"
"I just finished dinner at a friend's house. What's up?"
"Can you help me with something?"
Randy walked out of the villa just in time to see the taillights of Sophie's car disappear from view.
He smiled bitterly. Sophie was in such a hurry to leave; she didn't want to spend time with him.
Just as he was about to get in his car, Randy received a call from Valentin.
"Randy, I heard Electra tried to kill herself. She's in the emergency room. Geraldo and I are going to check on her. Do you want to come?"
They all knew Electra's suicide attempt was likely because of Randy.
Randy lowered his eyes and said, "I won't go. You guys go ahead. If she's okay, let me know."
"Alright, talk to you later."
Hanging up, Randy got in his car and drove away.
Half an hour later, Valentin and Geraldo arrived at the hospital and saw Sophie and a younger man rushing towards the inpatient department.
Geraldo turned to Valentin, "Did I see that right? Was that Sophie? Who's the guy with her? I don't recognize him."
Valentin shook his head, "No idea. Let's check on Electra first."
He didn't want to get involved in Randy and Sophie's affairs.
"Okay."
When they reached the emergency room, Electra was still being treated.
Delbert sat on a chair in the hallway, head down, lost in thought.
Hearing footsteps, he slowly looked up.
Not seeing Randy, Delbert sneered, "Randy didn't come. How heartless!"
Valentin sighed, "Delbert, you can't blame Randy for this. He promised Sophie he wouldn't see Electra for a month."
Knowing Randy's character, he wouldn't see Electra even if she caused trouble during this month.
"So his promise to Sophie is more important than a life?"
Valentin frowned, seeing that Delbert wouldn't listen, and said no more.
In his view, Electra's suicide attempt to get Randy's attention was her fault.
If he were Randy, he wouldn't come either.
Otherwise, Electra might use this tactic to manipulate Randy in the future, threatening suicide every time.
The hallway fell silent again, and no one spoke.
Geraldo wasn't too worried about Electra, but he was curious about Sophie and the man with her.
After a moment's hesitation, he sent Randy a message about what he saw.
Meanwhile, Randy had just returned home and was about to shower and rest when he received Geraldo's message.
Reading it, his face darkened.
Without hesitation, Randy grabbed his phone and rushed out, not even bothering to put on a coat, driving straight to the hospital.
At Metropolis Golden Gate Hospital, the eighth floor of the inpatient department.
As soon as Saul stepped out of the elevator, he saw that his mother Winifred Pena's bed had been moved to the hallway.
Anger flashed in his eyes as he stormed to the nurse's station, "Why did you move my mom's bed without permission? Her condition is already critical. If anything happens to her, can you take responsibility?"
Seeing Saul's angry face, the nurse replied, "Mr. Pena, we notified you to arrange a transfer, but you refused. The deadline has passed, and we're following hospital policy."
"My mom paid for the next month's medical expenses! Why are you transferring her?"
The nurse frowned, "Mr. Pena, we haven't received any payment. Your account has been overdue for over half a month."
"What? That's impossible!"
Saul's eyes widened in disbelief, both shocked and furious.
Electra didn't pay Winifred's medical bills?
Seeing his disbelief, the nurse pulled up the payment records and turned the screen towards him.
"Mr. Pena, you can see here. Your mother paid for half a month's stay last month, totaling fifty-two thousand five hundred and eighty-nine dollars. The account has been overdue since the 3rd of this month."
"No way, there must be a mistake!"
Seeing Saul's agitation, Sophie pulled him aside, "Saul, calm down. The priority is to pay the bill and get your mom back in her room."
Sophie's soothing voice helped Saul regain his composure.
"Right, the bill. But I don't have that kind of money."
He had contacted Sophie because he couldn't reach Electra.
"I'll cover it. You go check on your mom."
Saul looked at Sophie, eyes red, "Sophie, thank you! I'm sorry for the trouble."
"It's nothing. Go check on your mom."
After Saul left, Sophie turned to the nurse, "Can I pay the bill now?"
The nurse nodded, "Yes."
After Sophie paid, the nurse confirmed the payment and said, "Ms. Lee, I'll have my colleagues move Mr. Pena's mother back to her room."
"Thank you."
Sophie didn't argue, knowing the nurse was following hospital policy. Moving Saul's mother after half a month of unpaid bills was already lenient.
Soon, Winifred was back in her room.
Seeing her hooked up to various machines again, Saul finally relaxed.
After confirming Winifred's condition was stable, he turned to Sophie, "Sophie, thank you so much. Without you, I wouldn't know what to do. I'll find a way to repay you."
Sophie looked at Saul, eyes probing.
"Don't worry about the money right now. I have a question. How long has your mom been in the ICU?"
"Over three years. She was in a car accident and became a vegetable. The doctors said she might never wake up."
"So she's been in the ICU for over three years?"
"Yes."
"I saw the daily cost is over thirty thousand dollars. You're just a college student. How did you afford it?"
From what Sophie knew of Saul, he shouldn't have that kind of money.
Even if the driver paid compensation, it wouldn't be that much.
Saul smiled bitterly, "Sophie, I'm an illegitimate child. The money comes from my father's side."
If Ulysses Ross hadn't stopped paying, Electra wouldn't have forced him to approach Sophie.
Initially, Saul just wanted the medical expenses.
But after getting to know Sophie, he developed feelings for her.
Sophie was stunned, then said, "I'm sorry, I didn't know."
Thinking she had suspected Saul of pretending to be poor, Sophie felt guilty.
"Sophie, don't feel guilty. I've gotten used to it over the years."
To Saul, his father was just a stranger with a blood connection.
If not for Winifred's accident, he might never have met that family.
"So your mom's sudden unpaid bill is because of your father?"
Saul lowered his eyes, "Maybe. I'll ask him tomorrow."
"Okay."
"Saul, I'm sorry for the trouble tonight. It's late. I'll take you downstairs. About the money, I'll write you an IOU."
"No need. You can..."
Saul interrupted, "No, I insist. Sophie, I don't want to owe you more."
Seeing his determination, Sophie nodded, "Alright. But don't rush to repay. You can do it after you start working."
As they talked, they walked to the elevator. Just as they reached it, the doors opened.
Seeing Randy inside, Sophie was surprised.
"Randy, what are you doing here?"
