Chapter 539 I Have a Favor to Ask of You
Sharon's fingers shook as she held the photo.
The woman on the far left, elegantly dressed with her hair neatly pinned back, looked just like Sharon's mother in her memory.
Time hadn't seemed to touch her; she looked almost exactly as Sharon remembered.
Her fingertips turned white as she gripped the photo, and it took her a moment to place it back on the table, sliding it towards Alton.
"Mr. Roach, first off, I can't tell if this photo is real or fake. And second... if she really regretted it, why didn't she come back to see me even once all these years?"
Alton frowned. "Your mom didn't want to mess up your peaceful life."
"Then why are you here now, messing up our lives? If I'm not wrong, the teacher Demetrius mentioned is you. You gave him all that money and came back to get close to us. What's your real motive?"
Sharon's eyes were cold, filled with suspicion as she stared at him, clearly not buying a word he said.
Alton had expected this reaction and began to explain, "I came back to take you and Demetrius to Stellaria. And yes, I am Demetrius's teacher. The money he has is what he earned himself. You don't need to worry; there's nothing shady about it."
"Take me and Demetrius to Stellaria?" Sharon let out a mocking laugh, her eyes full of sarcasm. "After all these years, now you suddenly remember us? And did you even ask what Demetrius and I want? What makes you think we want to live in Stellaria?"
Alton's return must have another purpose; it couldn't be as simple as wanting to take them to Stellaria.
"I get that this is hard for you to accept and that you need time to process it, but your mom really misses you. She always carries your childhood photos with her, looking at them whenever she misses you. I truly—"
"Enough!" Sharon cut him off. "I don't want to hear it. If she chose to leave the country and cut ties with me, she shouldn't come back looking for me. I won't go to Stellaria, and I don't want to see her."
With that, she stood up and walked away.
She had only taken a few steps when Alton's voice came from behind, "Even if she's sick and wants to see you one last time before she dies, you wouldn't go?"
Sharon stopped and turned to look at him. "Mr. Roach, I have a few questions."
"What?"
"The two younger people standing next to her in the photo, who are they?"
Alton's expression darkened, and it took him several seconds to respond, "They are your half-siblings."
Sharon smiled, confirming her suspicion.
"She's been living well all these years, hasn't she?"
Considering Alton could transfer a billion dollars to Demetrius, Carolyn must have been doing well.
"Yes, she has." Alton looked at her, puzzled by her question.
"Living well, yet she never contacted me or came to see me. Stellaria is just a few hours' flight from Metropolis. You say she misses me, but there's no real action to show it."
Alton frowned. "Your mom had her reasons."
Leaving her when she was just a child and then staying with her other two children until they were grown, without ever coming back to see her, indeed, she had her reasons.
Sharon nodded. "I get that she had her reasons for not seeing me. Just like I have my reasons for not going to see her."
With that, Sharon turned and walked away.
If Carolyn had been unable to see her due to life's hardships, Sharon wouldn't blame her.
But from the photo, it was clear she had been living well.
So Alton's claim that she missed her seemed laughable to Sharon.
Her supposed longing wasn't even worth the price of a plane ticket.
Back in her car, Sharon took a deep breath to calm herself before driving away.
Not long after she left, Alton picked up his phone and made a call, sounding a bit helpless. "Aunt Carolyn, Sharon's really resistant to going to Stellaria."
A cold female voice responded on the other end, "No matter what, you must bring her back."
"Got it. You've really given me a tough task."
"I'm very busy here, so I'll leave it at that." With that, Carolyn hung up decisively.
Alton shook his head, put away his phone, and left.
Back home, Sharon sat on the couch and turned on the TV, but she couldn't focus on the show. Her mind was filled with Alton's words from the café.
Even though she knew Alton had an agenda, she couldn't help but think about Carolyn.
Lost in thought, she suddenly received a call from Sophie.
"Sharon, are you free now? Want to go shopping?"
Sharon thought for a moment. Staying home would only make her overthink, so she agreed.
They met at the mall entrance, and as soon as Sophie saw her, she couldn't help but comment, "You look so down."
"Too much has happened lately. I'm a bit tired."
Sophie nodded. "Same here. I had a fight with Randy yesterday. I don't know how he manages to be so annoying every day. It's driving me crazy."
Seeing Sophie so upset, looking every bit like a woman in love, Sharon couldn't help but say, "You don't know how much I envy you, only having to worry about love. I have so many other things to stress about."
"Alright. We're here to have fun. No more grumbling. Today is all about happy shopping. I haven't been out shopping in ages."
"Okay."
They spent over two hours in the mall.
They went in empty-handed and came out with smiles and a dozen shopping bags each.
"Shopping is the best!" Sophie exclaimed.
Especially since she had used Randy's card for all the purchases, it felt even better.
It was his way of making up for upsetting her yesterday, and she felt no guilt spending his money.
Sharon looked at her and couldn't help but laugh. "You're right, but carrying all these bags is exhausting. Let's put them in the car and find a place to eat."
"Sounds good."
They headed to the parking lot to stow their bags. Just as they were about to leave, a red Porsche Panamera pulled up in front of them.
Damon stepped out, smiling. "Ms. Roach, Ms. Lee, what a coincidence! I didn't expect to see you here."
Sophie looked at him with a blank expression. "It is a coincidence. We have things to do, so if you don't mind, we'll be on our way."
Seeing Sophie pulling Sharon away, Damon quickly blocked their path. "Ms. Roach, I actually have a favor to ask."
