Chapter 269 Am I Some Kind of Beast?

She barked, "Go dig up everything on Sharon from the past few years. I wanna know who she's been hanging with!"

She couldn't go after Sharon directly, but messing with her crew would do the trick.

"Got it, Ms. Walker."

Once the servant bounced, Rebecca stared out the window, her eyes burning with hate.

'Sharon's supposed to be dead, so why's she popping up again? Couldn't she just stay gone? No way I'm letting anyone mess up my thing with Seb this time!' Rebecca fumed inside.

Zachary and Demetrius took their sweet time at the mall, so it was almost five by the time they rolled up to Sharon's place. Zachary, being the opportunist he is, stuck around for dinner.

While Sharon was whipping up dinner, he played sous-chef.

Sharon, rocking an apron and her hair tied back with a simple black tie, looked so chill and peaceful. It made Zachary's heart melt.

This was the life he wanted—just kicking back and enjoying every day with Sharon.

Sharon finished chopping the potatoes, noticed him zoning out, and waved her hand in front of his face, grinning, "What's up with you?"

Zachary snapped out of it, meeting Sharon's amused eyes, his cheeks turning red. He awkwardly handed over the garlic he was holding.

"Uh, nothing. The garlic's peeled..."

Hearing Sharon's laugh, Zachary looked down and realized he had handed her a whole head of garlic. He felt like a total goof.

Sharon chuckled, "Alright, go hang with Demetrius. I got this."

She took the garlic from him, her fingers brushing his palm, sending a shiver through him and making his face even redder.

He stammered, "Uh, I'll go out then. If you need anything, just holler."

With that, he bolted towards the living room, looking like he was making a run for it.

Sharon couldn't help but smile. She didn't expect Zachary to be so shy, especially since he was pushing thirty.

After dinner, Sharon casually asked, "So, what'd you snag at the mall today?"

Zachary raised an eyebrow and smirked, "You really wanna know?"

"Not really."

"Then I ain't telling you, haha. By the way, that roast beef tonight was killer. You should totally open a restaurant."

Seeing him dodge the question, Sharon shot him a playful glare, "If it's that good, finish it all. No leftovers."

"You got it!"

After dinner, Zachary helped with the dishes. As he was about to bounce, he looked at Sharon and said, "Sharon, I gotta go on a business trip tomorrow. When I get back, I wanna hear your answer."

Sharon nodded, "Alright, safe travels."

After saying goodbye to Demetrius, Zachary took the trash out with him.

Sharon closed the door and headed back to the living room, only to see Demetrius sitting on the carpet, staring at her.

"Demetrius, what's up?" Sharon smiled and sat down next to him, helping him tidy up the toys they had just played with.

Demetrius asked, "Mom, are you gonna marry Mr. Cook? Is he gonna be my new dad?"

Sharon was caught off guard by Demetrius's question and paused, turning to look at him, "Demetrius, why are you asking this out of the blue?"

Demetrius lowered his head, looking a bit sad, "My old classmate's mom got her a new dad, and he used to hit her. She came to school with bruises every day, and then she transferred. Mom, if you marry Mr. Cook, will he hit me?"

Hearing this, Sharon frowned, dropped the toys, and pulled Demetrius onto the couch. She knelt in front of him, looking him straight in the eye, and said seriously, "Demetrius, Mr. Cook is always super nice to you. He'd never hurt you. And I’d never let anyone hurt you. You’re the most important person in my life, no matter what."

Demetrius's sad eyes suddenly lit up, "Even more important than Mr. Cook?"

Sharon reassured him, "Of course, no matter who I marry, you’ll always be my number one."

Demetrius hugged Sharon tight, "I love you the most, Mom."

Sharon patted his back, knowing he probably sensed the changes between her and Zachary and felt insecure.

No matter how smart Demetrius was, he was still just a four-year-old kid. Without a dad around, it made sense for him to be more sensitive than other kids.

Sharon decided she needed to spend more time with him to make him feel secure.

After tucking Demetrius in, Sharon headed back to the living room, ready to chill with a book. But then her phone rang—it was Lavern.

"Sharon, Mr. Smith's secretary hit me up today. They wanna do a seminar for the company's researchers and asked if you could share some of your experience. I said yes for you. They'll pick you up at the lab this Friday at noon."

Sharon pursed her lips. She knew she couldn't avoid Seb forever after running into him the other day.

But since Seb had forgotten about her and she didn't want to get tangled up with him, even if they crossed paths, it shouldn't be a big deal.

"Okay, got it."

After hanging up, Sharon picked up her book but couldn't focus.

She was worried Seb might find out about Demetrius one day and try to take him away.

Frustrated, Sharon put down the book and took a deep breath to calm herself. Demetrius had been with her all these years and had no bond with Seb. Even if Seb wanted to take him, it wouldn't be that easy.

With these thoughts swirling in her head, Sharon had a restless night. She finally dozed off near dawn, only to dream that Seb discovered Demetrius and took him away to a place she couldn't find. She woke up in a panic.

Before she knew it, it was noon. Just after lunch, Sharon got a call from Rufus.

"Ms. Roach, hey, I'm Rufus Warren, Mr. Smith's secretary. Mr. Smith asked me to pick you up. I'm downstairs now."

Sharon said, "Okay, Mr. Warren, give me five minutes. I'll be right down."

"Sure, no rush."

Sharon got ready and went downstairs, spotting a black Maybach parked outside with a distinctive license plate.

Rufus stood by the car and opened the door for her as she approached.

"Ms. Roach, please."

Just as Sharon was about to get in, she saw Seb sitting in the back seat.

Seb, dressed in a black suit, holding a document, his profile cold and indifferent, exuded an aura that warned others to keep their distance.

Seeing Sharon hesitate, Rufus explained, "Ms. Roach, Mr. Smith just finished a meeting and is also heading to the branch office, so he came to pick you up."

Sharon nodded, "Alright, thanks."

She got into the car, pressing herself against the door, but she could still sense Seb's faint scent enveloping her, inescapable, like a net trapping her, making it hard to breathe.

Seb glanced at Sharon, who was practically glued to the door, his eyes darkening. He spoke in a deep voice, "Ms. Roach, am I some kind of monster?"
