Chapter 30 How Do You Plan to Hold Me Accountable?
In the moment Sharon was stunned, Seb had already pulled her to the sink, turning on the faucet to rinse the acid burn on her hand.
As the water flowed over the back of her hand, she suddenly snapped back to reality, quickly taking off her coat and pulling her hand away from Seb's. "Mr. Smith, I can handle it myself."
She lowered her head, trying hard to ignore the unfamiliar emotions surging within her. Seb was Alex's uncle, so his assistance must be out of consideration for Alex.
A few minutes later, the sharp burning sensation on her hand gradually subsided and Sharon turned off the water. Upon seeing the mess in the lab, she couldn't help but sigh, "Mr. Smith, you should leave first."
As Seb and Sharon walked out of the lab, Sharon intended to return the coat to Seb, but his cold gaze fixed on her, causing her hand to slowly tighten. She could feel that Seb was clearly very angry, and the target of his anger was evidently herself.
She understood that no investor would be pleased to see problems with their invested project.
Susan breathed a sigh of relief upon seeing Seb unharmed, then turned to Sharon with a frown. "What exactly happened? How did it suddenly explode?"
Just as Sharon was about to explain, Seb said in a deep voice, "Go to the hospital first."
A flash of panic crossed Susan's eyes as she hurriedly asked, "Mr. Smith, are you hurt?"
"No, it's her," Seb pointed at Sharon.
Sharon said, "I'm fine. I can hold off on going to the hospital. Actually, I added the dilute sulfuric acid needed for today's experiment, but as soon as I added it, I felt the reagent was wrong. It seems like someone swapped the dilute sulfuric acid with the concentrated one"
Susan's brow immediately furrowed. If someone had purposely messed with Sharon, it was a low blow. The experiment's failure not only displeased Seb but also put Sharon at risk of punishment, possibly even facing the risk of dismissal.
Susan's expression was grim, and she clearly believed Sharon's words. It made Irene feel a surge of resentment. Although Susan knew the previous anonymous report was submitted by Sharon, Susan didn't question Sharon this time.
Irene looked at Sharon. "Sharon, we still need to figure this out. Both concentrated and dilute sulfuric acid are stored in the storage room. It's possible you took the wrong one, so we can't be sure it was someone else's doing, right?"
Susan's sharp gaze turned to Irene, and she said in a deep voice, "Mr. Smith, I will get to the bottom of this and give you an explanation."
Seb silently watched her, his tone cold. "Okay, Ms. Lewis, I await your investigation results."
Susan nodded, then turned to Sharon and said, "Go to the hospital to get your wound checked out. Take a few days off work. We'll discuss everything once we have more information."
If the mistake was Sharon's, she might no longer have opportunities for independent operation in drug research in the future.
"Understood." Sharon replied.
Sharon turned to leave, but Seb spoke up, "I'll take you to the hospital."
Susan was stunned for a moment, unable to believe that Seb would offer to take her to the hospital. From her observations of Seb, he was not a gentle person. Why would Seb willingly take an normal employee from a company the group invested in to the hospital?
Irene felt a twinge of jealousy. She thought, 'Although Seb is Alex's uncle, Alex and Seb hold different statuses, and the real-life Seb is even more handsome and captivating than the one seen on TV. Moreover, Seb and Alex's positions in the business world are worlds apart. If I could date Seb, won't I be able to completely overshadow Sharon?'
So Irene quickly interjected, "Sharon, I'll go with you. It's not convenient for you to handle things like registration."
Sharon glanced back at Irene. Initially, she thought Irene was being kind, but then she noticed Irene's gaze constantly lingering on Seb.
She wondered why Irene was so focused on Seb. Could it be that Irene had a crush on Seb?
Without any extra thoughts, Irene swiftly walked towards the elevator, coincidentally passing by Seb as he approached the elevator door.
"It's not convenient to get a cab now. I'll take you to the hospital," Seb's cool voice came from above.
Sharon looked up, meeting his serious gaze, and frowned. "Mr. Smith, thank you for your kindness, but I can handle it myself."
She slightly paused, trying to stop this unnecessary complication.
Before she could finish her sentence, the elevator arrived.
Sharon stepped in first, with Seb following closely behind.
Seb said, "I don't like repeating myself, and I also need to stop by the hospital for something Taking you is just on the way."
Hearing this, Sharon suddenly turned to look at him. "Did the concentrated sulfuric acid splash on you too?"
Her big eyes were wide open, like a startled little rabbit, making Seb want to pat her head.
But thinking of her identity, Seb restrained himself, turned his gaze away coldly, and said softly, "Yes."
"Where are you hurt?" Sharon felt a pang of guilt. The person who switched the dilute sulfuric acid with concentrated sulfuric acid today was clearly trying to frame her, but Seb got involved as a result.
"My back," Seb replied.
Sharon tried to grab his shirt to turn him around and check his wound, but as soon as she raised her hand, she felt it was inappropriate.
Seb looked down at her slender hand, a complex emotion flickering in his eyes. "What's wrong?"
Sharon withdrew her hand and said softly, "Mr. Smith, could you turn around? I want to see how bad the injury is."
"Okay," Seb agreed.
Seeing the black spots on Seb's white shirt left by the concentrated sulfuric acid burns, Sharon couldn't help but bite her lip and said guiltily, "Mr. Smith, I'm sorry. This was my fault today. I'll take full responsibility for your medical expenses."
Seb turned back, his tone indifferent. "No need. The treatment won't cost much."
Compared to his own injury, he was more concerned about the injury on her hand.
In his mind, girls usually cherished their appearance. If a scar were to remain on her otherwise perfect hand, Sharon would likely be very upset.
Sharon said, "It's not about the money. Today's mishap was my responsibility. It's only fair that I take care of your medical bills. I truly appreciate that you're not blaming me."
Seb retorted, "Who said I'm not holding you accountable?"
Sharon looked up at Seb, uncertainly asking, "How do you plan to hold me accountable?"
If Seb wanted compensation, she had just sold her house in the Upper East Side and should be able to afford it, but she hoped he wouldn't ask for too much.
At this moment, in Seb's eyes, Sharon's appearance was like an unsettled little rabbit, evoking a sense of pity in him.
