Chapter 140 Even You Don't Understand Me?
Sharon and Karen turned their heads at the same time, not realizing Robert was already awake.
Sharon rushed to help him, but he pushed her away.
"Sharon, you've really let me down."
Sharon froze under Robert's disappointed look.
"Dad, you don't get me either?"
She did it for Robert's sake. She thought if no one else understood, at least he would.
"Does it even matter if I do? It's all in the past. Bringing it up now will only mess up your life. You've got a future ahead. If you send David in, what if the Smith family comes after you?"
He couldn't protect Sharon now. What she was doing would only ruin her life.
"You want me to act like I know nothing and keep living in resentment with Alex?"
"Whether you're with him or not has nothing to do with Robert Pharmaceuticals going bankrupt. Can you fix this now?"
Sharon took a deep breath. "No, I've already given the evidence to the police. Even if I could fix it, I wouldn't."
Anger flashed in Robert's eyes, and he raised his hand to slap Sharon.
At the last moment, he softened.
Robert lowered his trembling hand and looked away. "Just go. I'll handle it. Pretend you never knew."
Sharon's expression changed. "Dad, what are you going to do? David hurt you so badly, and you still let him go?"
"It's not about letting him go. I'm going to beg the Smith family to let you go."
"I didn't do anything wrong. David did, and the Smith family covered for him!"
Robert sighed. "The truth doesn't matter. When you got power, even your screw-ups get a pass. Opposing the Smith family will destroy you. So even if you're right, you're wrong. Get it?"
Sharon shook her head stubbornly. "I don't get it, Dad. I just want fairness."
"Fairness comes at a price, a price neither you nor I can afford."
The room fell silent.
Sharon looked at Robert and finally spoke, "So, David bankrupting the Wright family doesn't need a price. The accident he caused that broke up dozens of families doesn't need a price. I just want fairness, and that's too expensive, right?"
"Right! If you can't handle the Smith family's retaliation, you shouldn't have brought this up."
Robert's face was indifferent, showing the numbness of someone who had long accepted reality.
He wanted fairness too, but he knew it was out of reach.
Sharon had the guts to hand over the evidence and face the Smith family. Robert was proud but also worried.
The world was ruled by the strong. When you were not strong enough, insisting on fairness was a mistake.
He used to protect Sharon. Even after the Wright family went bankrupt, Sharon married Alex, who could protect her. So Robert never taught her these harsh truths.
Now, Robert felt it was time for Sharon to learn.
"Dad, if fairness costs my future and life, I'm willing to gamble them for it."
Robert's slap finally landed on Sharon's face. He withdrew his trembling hand and angrily said, "Do you think gambling your future and life will get you fairness? Even if you risk everything, David won't get what he deserves. This world is survival of the fittest. If you keep going your own way, we're done!"
Sharon stepped back, her gaze at Robert filled with disappointment.
"Dad, you've changed. You're a stranger to me now."
With that, Sharon ran out of the room.
Karen, who had been silent, frowned and said, "Robert, you spoiled Sharon too much. That's why she acts without thinking."
"Karen, no matter what, Sharon is my daughter. If she did something wrong, I apologize, but don't criticize her in front of me."
Karen's face stiffened, and she threw up her hands. "Fine, I won't say anything. Being a stepmother is tough; no matter what you do, it's wrong. Now I get it!"
Robert frowned, looking a bit helpless. "That's not what I meant."
"Then what do you mean? I've taken care of you diligently these past two years while you were sick, and I haven't mistreated Sharon. She caused such a big mess this time, and I can't even say a word about it?"
Seeing Karen's aggressive demeanor, Robert felt a bit irritated. He turned his head away and said nothing more.
Karen got even angrier and started complaining about how hard it had been to take care of Robert over the years.
After a few minutes, Robert couldn't take it anymore and shouted, "Yes, you've worked hard taking care of me, but before Robert Pharmaceuticals went bankrupt, didn't I give you enough? No matter what my daughter does, it's not your place to criticize her!"
Karen let out a cold laugh. "Fine, then let her take care of you from now on. Don't expect me to do it anymore!"
With that, Karen stormed out, slamming the door behind her, leaving the room in silence.
Robert sighed, picked up his phone, and dialed a number.
After leaving the hospital, Sharon immediately called Sophie out for a drink.
When Sophie found out that Sharon had divorced Alex, her eyes widened.
"Really, he agreed to the divorce?"
Sharon took the divorce certificate out of her bag and handed it to her. "See this? Now you believe me, right?"
Sophie opened the divorce certificate and finally believed Sharon. After handing it back, she raised her glass to Sharon.
"Come on, to celebrate your successful divorce, let's drink until we drop tonight!"
Sharon downed her glass in one gulp and poured herself another full one.
"What's going on? Isn't divorce a good thing? You don't seem very happy."
Sharon took a sip of her drink and briefly explained her argument with Robert.
After listening, Sophie was silent for a moment before speaking. "I heard about you sending David in. From Robert's perspective, he was also thinking of you. Neither of you is wrong; the ones at fault are the Smith family."
Sharon gave a bitter smile, her eyes a bit red. "I'm not blaming him. I'm just sad that he suffered so much, and I can't get justice for him."
Sophie gently patted her back and said softly, "You've done very well. If it were me, I wouldn't have your courage. But Robert is also right."
With Sharon's current abilities, seeking justice was too difficult.
It was unfair to her and the Wright family, but what could they do about it?
The world was like this; unfair things happened every day.
To be treated fairly, you have to become stronger.
Seeing Sharon lower her eyes without saying anything, Sophie tried to persuade her. "Tomorrow, go apologize to Robert and discuss how to handle this. If you really don't let David go, I'm afraid the Smith family will come after you."
"Besides, for you and Robert right now, the most important thing is to get him better and get on with your lives."
Sharon closed her eyes, feeling a sense of helplessness.
Sharon thought, 'Everyone said I shouldn't go after David. Have I really done something wrong? But all I want is fairness.'
After a long time, Sharon finally spoke. "Sophie, I understand. I'll go apologize to my dad tomorrow."
Sharon didn't think she was wrong, but she didn't want Robert to worry about her. Moreover, with Robert's health getting worse, she didn't want to upset him further.
"That's the spirit. Come on, cheers. To celebrating you ditching that douchebag and starting anew!"
They drank until they didn't know how much, and eventually, Sharon and Sophie fell asleep in the booth.
When Sharon woke up again, it was already past eight in the morning.
As soon as she turned on her phone, she saw dozens of missed calls from Karen. Her face changed, and she quickly called back.
