Chapter 297 Don't Want to Burden Him Further

But then he quickly adjusted his expression and strolled over to Sharon and Demetrius.

Sharon, holding Demetrius's hand, stepped out of the elevator and looked at Zachary, surprised. "Zachary, what brings you here today?"

Zachary's face softened. "Just came to check on you and Demetrius."

He then turned to Seb. "Mr. Smith, thanks for bringing them back. I'll take the backpack."

He reached for the backpack, but Seb dodged his hand, looking indifferent. "No need. Demetrius is my kid; it's my responsibility."

Zachary raised an eyebrow but didn't push it. As he pulled his hand back, he noticed the injury on Demetrius's face and his expression shifted. "Demetrius, what happened to your face?"

Sharon quickly answered, "He got into a fight at school. It's been handled."

"How did it get so bad?" Zachary pressed, his tone growing more worried.

"The other kid's in worse shape. Come on in." Sharon opened the door and was about to take the backpack from Seb when Seb suddenly said, "Ms. Roach, can I come inside and see how Demetrius is living, if that's okay?"

Since he asked, Sharon had no choice but to agree, even though she wasn't thrilled about it.

Seb walked into the living room. Sharon's place was a big flat, and the living room was spacious, mostly filled with Demetrius's toys.

The decor made the place feel really cozy.

From the many unique little ornaments in the living room, it was clear that the person living here had a great love for life.

Zachary watched Seb's back, his eyes narrowing slightly.

After they went in, Sharon asked Demetrius to show Seb around and pulled Zachary into the kitchen to make tea together.

Sharon said, "Zachary, I heard you quit. It's all my fault."

She had sensed something was off when she saw him at the door. Even though he was smiling, she could tell he was down.

Zachary paused while filling the kettle, then spoke softly after a few seconds, "Sharon, it's not your fault."

The main reason he left the Cook Group wasn't the failed investment but because Doyle wanted him out.

He couldn't understand why Doyle wanted to kick him out of the Cook Group over a single mistake.

Hearing this, Sharon felt even more guilty.

In the living room, Seb watched the close interaction between Zachary and Sharon, his eyes growing icy cold.

Sharon had previously mentioned wanting Zachary to be Demetrius's father, and now it seemed she was serious.

Seb was about to head to the kitchen when his phone suddenly rang.

"What's up?" he answered.

A voice on the other end said, "Mr. Smith, I can't find any information about your past. I suggest you either go back to Metropolis or go abroad to ask your nephew."

"Got it." After hanging up, Seb immediately asked Rufus to book a flight to Stellaria and to find out the current address of Alex and his family.

Not long after Seb woke up from a coma, Alex and David had gone abroad and hadn't returned in years. Seb hadn't thought much of it before, but now that he realized he had memory issues, their prolonged absence seemed unusual.

"Mr. Smith, there's a flight in two hours. You need to head to the airport now. Should I book a later one?" Rufus asked.

"No need. Book the one in two hours. I'll head there now." With that, Seb put away his phone and glanced at the kitchen where Zachary and Sharon were still talking closely. He cleared his throat, "Ms. Roach, I have something urgent to attend to, so I have to leave now. If Demetrius has any issues at school, you can call me directly."

Sharon turned around, her expression indifferent. "Alright, I won't see you out, Mr. Smith."

Seb's eyes darkened. From Sharon's dismissive attitude, he knew she wouldn't call him. But even if she didn't, Byron would keep him in the loop.

After Seb left, Zachary hesitated for a moment before asking, "Why did Seb come back with you today?"

Sharon raised an eyebrow, smiling. "You've been dying to ask that, haven't you?"

Zachary met her gaze and chuckled. "Just a bit curious."

Sharon briefly explained how Demetrius had gotten into a fight at school and how Seb had shown up shortly after she did.

After hearing this, Zachary frowned. "Sharon, why didn't you call me when something so serious happened?"

Sharon bit her lip and looked down, murmuring, "I was too anxious at the time and didn't think of it."

Plus, she had just learned that Zachary had been forced to resign because of her and Demetrius. Even if she had thought of it, she wouldn't have called him. She had already caused him enough trouble and didn't want to burden him further.

"Next time, don't forget," Zachary said gently.

"Okay," Sharon replied.

Looking at her serene profile, Zachary softly said, "Don't worry about me leaving the Cook Group. I can handle it."

Over the years, he had made other arrangements outside the Cook Group. If he couldn't return, he would start his own company.

Sharon was about to speak when Zachary's phone suddenly rang. Seeing it was Doyle, he frowned but answered the call. "Dad, what's up?"

Doyle's voice came through the phone. "Come back immediately. I need to talk to you!"

Zachary was about to respond when the call abruptly ended. He looked at Sharon helplessly. "I wanted to have dinner with you and Demetrius, but I can't now. My dad wants me to go back."

Sharon reassured him, "There will be other opportunities. Take care of your business first."

"Alright," Zachary replied, nodding.

Leaving Sharon's house, Zachary drove straight home. As soon as he walked into the living room, Doyle threw a document at his feet. "Zachary, I didn't know you had such capabilities! Well done!"

Seeing Doyle's sullen face, Zachary was baffled and picked up the document. Seeing it was about the Lawson Group's resort project, he was surprised. "The Lawson Group wants to collaborate with the Cook Group?"

Doyle sneered. "Don't play dumb! The Lawson Group said they wouldn't sign the deal if you weren't in charge of the Cook Group. No wonder you resigned so easily today. You were waiting for this!"

Zachary frowned. "Dad, I don't know what you're talking about. I did contact the Lawson Group, but they said the Cook Group wasn't on their list of potential partners, so I gave up on the project. How could they..."

Doyle interrupted him, "You know exactly what's going on! If you want to return to the Cook Group so badly, fine, but Hugo must become the vice president!"

Zachary didn't know why the Lawson Group made such a request, but it didn't matter now. No matter how he explained, Doyle wouldn't believe him. He slowly looked up at Doyle and said, "Dad, why are you doing this to me? I've been the president of the Cook Group for five years and believe I've done a good job. Why are you forcing me to resign over one mistake? Do my five years of effort mean nothing to you?"
