Chapter 390 Really Can't Escape for a Lifetime

As soon as the call connected, Bernice's panicked voice came through, "Uncle Seb, Mr. Wright just fainted and they're rushing him to the hospital. I've got an important meeting later. Can you come over now?"

"What's the address?" Seb asked calmly.

After Bernice gave him the hospital address, Seb hung up.

In less than half an hour, Seb was at the hospital.

Seeing him, Bernice finally breathed a sigh of relief and quickly walked up, "Uncle Seb, Mr. Wright is still in emergency care. I have to go to my meeting now."

"Okay," Seb nodded.

Bernice hurried off, and the corridor soon quieted down.

Paul, standing behind, spoke up, "Mr. Smith, should we inform Ms. Roach about this?"

"After all, Mr. Wright is her father, and now he's in critical condition. If something happens..." Paul added.

Thinking about Sharon's attitude towards Robert, Seb felt his eyes darken, "No, we'll deal with it later."

"Understood."

After several more hours of emergency care, the light in the emergency room finally went out.

The doctor came out, followed by Robert, who was still unconscious from the anesthesia and lying on a hospital bed.

Robert's face was pale, his temples were graying, and his high cheekbones protruded due to long-term malnutrition, making him look gaunt.

"Doctor, how is he now?" Seb asked.

"We managed to stabilize him for now, but the patient had a kidney transplant before and didn't recover well after the surgery. His health is very poor and he needs to be well taken care of. He can't handle too much stress. If he faints again, it will be even harder to save him," the doctor explained.

Seb nodded, "Thank you for your hard work."

After Robert was sent to the ward, Paul suggested staying to watch over him, but Seb refused.

"Robert will probably be hospitalized for a while. Find two caregivers to take turns looking after him. Make sure to find ones with good temperaments who are hardworking," Seb said.

"Okay, I'll get on it right away."

Not long after Paul left, Seb's phone rang.

Seeing it was a call from Sharon, Seb checked the time and realized it was already close to 6 PM.

"Hey, Sharon, I had an unexpected engagement this afternoon and can't make it back. I'll have the driver take you home first."

"Okay, then Demetrius and I will wait for you at home for dinner," Sharon said.

"Don't wait up for me. I might be a few more hours here. I'll probably come back after dinner."

Sharon frowned and, after a moment, said, "Alright, come back early and don't drink too much."

After hanging up, Sharon tidied up her desk and got ready to leave with her bag.

As Sharon passed by Ariana's desk, she noticed Ariana staring blankly at her phone. "Ariana, why aren't you getting ready to leave?"

Ariana seemed startled by her voice and turned around in a panic, "Sharon, I'm fine, just a bit tired. I was planning to rest for a bit before leaving."

"Okay, just remember to lock the office door when you leave."

"Got it."

After Sharon left, Ariana looked down at her phone, frowning. Half an hour ago, Ariana had received a message from a long-lost relative, who sent her a photo of a severed thumb, saying that if she didn't raise money to save her brother, they would really kill Orval.

Ariana was freaked out by the photo and didn't reply to the relative.

But what truly had her on edge was the looming specter of Blanca. If she discovered that Orval's finger had been cut off, her fury would be boundless and cruelly directed at Ariana.

The guy who tried to drug and kidnap Ariana last time was still out there somewhere. He could be lurking, ready to pounce again when she was alone. If he succeeded in capturing her again, escaping his grasp would be impossible.

The more she thought about it, the more scared she got.

She couldn't let herself be taken back.

The office door creaked open, and Ariana jumped at the sound of footsteps behind her.

She turned around, her panicked expression startling Kirk.

"Ariana, what's wrong? You look like you've seen a ghost," Kirk asked, concerned.

Meeting his worried gaze, Ariana lowered her head, grabbed her bag, and walked out, "Nothing, Mr. Marshall. I'm heading home. If you have any work stuff, let's handle it tomorrow. I'm locking up."

Kirk walked out with her, "I came to check on you. I noticed you were really scared that day, and the guy who tried to drug you is still out there. I'll drive you to and from work for a while."

Ariana was taken aback, feeling a mix of emotions she couldn't quite describe.

After a moment of silence, she still refused, "Mr. Marshall, thanks for the offer, but I can manage on my own."

Seeing her stubbornness, Kirk sighed, "Ariana, do you think I'm doing this to get close to you or use you?"

Ariana pressed her lips together, glanced at him, and said, "Mr. Marshall, you're overthinking it. I just don't want to owe you too much."

"Actually, by helping you, I'm also helping my past self."

Ariana didn't get what he meant and was about to ask when she saw Kirk looking at her seriously.

"I was once like you, morally blackmailed by my parents to send all my earnings back to them," Kirk continued.

Ariana frowned, wanting to interrupt, but seeing Kirk's pained expression, she held back.

"If it weren't for my brother's poor health, my parents wouldn't have had me. From a young age, they drilled into me that I had to take care of my brother and that all my earnings should go towards his medical bills. At first, seeing my brother suffer, I felt heartbroken and vowed to work hard to pay for his treatment.

"But as I got older, I realized my parents never saw me as an independent person, just a walking wallet for my brother's treatment. I didn't want to live like that anymore; I wanted my own life.

"When my relationship with my mom was at its worst, she said she wished it was me who was sick. At that moment, I was completely disillusioned with my family."

As Kirk spoke, his expression was calm, but his red eyes and tightly clenched hands betrayed his emotions.

"Mr. Marshall, I'm sorry. I didn't know you had such a tough life," Ariana said, trying to comfort him.

When Ariana first met Kirk, she didn't like him. She thought he was a shady guy, always putting on a friendly face but with eyes like a cold snake, ready to strike at any moment.

She never expected Kirk to have such a vulnerable side.

Maybe Kirk just didn't trust anyone because he'd been deeply hurt by his family.
