Chapter 239 The Child in the Belly Isn't His
Alex lazily thumbed through the report, then handed it to Ava with a chill vibe and said, "Keep this safe, alright?"
Ava took the report, head down, stashed it in the vanity, and then turned to Alex.
"Alex, something up today? You seem kinda off."
So off that she couldn't shake the feeling Alex might've found out something.
Alex squinted, took a few beats before saying, "Nah, just work's been a grind lately."
"Then crash on the sofa, I'll give you a massage."
"No need, got stuff to do at the office. Just swung by to check on you. You should hit the hay early."
Normally, Ava would've tried to make Alex stay, but she had her own worries today, so she let it slide.
Once Alex's car was outta sight, Ava dialed Grace's number.
"Grace, did you spill something to Alex?"
"What are you talking about?"
Ava sneered. "Don't play dumb. Alex popped by tonight asking for my prenatal check-up report. Only you knew about that. You must've blabbed!"
Grace sounded annoyed. "You're not worth my time. Instead of grilling me, maybe think about what you did to make him suspicious. Guilty conscience much?"
"Was it really not you?"
All Ava got was the busy tone.
Ava put down the phone, feeling uneasy.
She thought, 'Could it really not be Grace?'
But she'd been super careful lately, nothing to make Alex suspicious.
After racking her brain, Ava decided to hit up Alex's office the next day.
Early the next morning, Ava walked into Alex's office with a thermos.
As soon as she hit the top floor, Joseph stopped her.
"Ms. Kim, Mr. Smith's swamped right now."
Ava frowned. "I'll wait for him in the break room then."
"Ms. Kim, Mr. Smith's got meetings all day. You can leave the stuff with me, I'll pass it on."
Ava wasn't leaving without getting a read on Alex.
"No matter how busy, he's gotta eat lunch, right? I got time, I'll wait. You do your thing."
With that, Ava headed to the break room.
Joseph sighed, went back to his desk, and sent Alex a message to give him the heads-up.
Alex had just wrapped up a medical check-up. Seeing Joseph's message, his face darkened.
He'd just visited last night, and now Ava showed up at the office. Hard not to think she was up to something.
Alex's lips tightened, eyes turning cold.
In less than half an hour, he was back at the office.
Seeing Alex come in, Ava felt a bit uneasy.
She thought, 'Alex clearly wasn't here, so why did Joseph say he had meetings all day?'
Pushing down her doubts, she smiled and walked over. "Alex, you said you were tired last night, so I made you something to eat."
Alex took it with a cold look. "Hmm, got a lot on my plate today, no time to hang. I'll have the driver take you home later."
"Okay." Ava nodded, casually asking, "Where'd you go just now? Meeting a client?"
"Yeah."
Alex didn't want to chat more and told Joseph to get a driver to take Ava home.
On the ride back, Ava felt uneasy. She couldn't shake the feeling and decided to hire someone to dig into Alex's business.
In less than three days, Alex got his test results.
When the doctor called, Alex was in the middle of lunch.
"Mr. Smith, your test results are in. If you can, it's best to come over."
The serious tone made Alex's heart drop. "Is something wrong with the report?"
"Yes, it's hard to explain over the phone. Come in, and we'll talk."
In less than half an hour, Alex was at the hospital.
The doctor sighed and handed him the report.
"Mr. Smith, according to the results, you have azoospermia."
Alex couldn't believe it. He felt dizzy, almost losing his balance.
He thought, 'Azoospermia? No way! This is nuts!'
Taking a deep breath, Alex looked at the doctor, his voice cold. "I had a similar check-up before, and everything was fine. Can this just pop up out of nowhere? And could your results be wrong?"
By the end, Alex's tone was icy and pissed.
The doctor sighed and shook his head. "This is mostly congenital, and your test was done by a specialist. It's almost impossible for it to be mixed up with someone else's."
In other words, the report was legit.
"No way, I want another test!"
Seeing Alex's agitation, the doctor got it. The drama between Alex, Sharon, and Ava was all over Metropolis. He'd heard the gossip too.
If Alex's azoospermia was confirmed, it meant Ava's baby wasn't his.
No guy could handle being played like that.
"Mr. Smith, if you don't trust our hospital, go to another one."
Clutching the crumpled report, Alex stood up and glared at the doctor. "Of course, I'll go to another hospital. If your results are wrong, I won't let this slide!"
With that, Alex stormed out.
Back in his car, he tossed the report aside, his face dark with anger. He drove straight to another hospital in Metropolis.
The results came back fast, and they were the same as the first hospital's.
Alex was crushed. No matter how much he didn't want to believe it, he had to face the fact that he had azoospermia.
Holding the report, Alex asked the doctor if there was any chance he could get a woman pregnant.
The doctor seemed hesitant but finally said, "Mr. Smith, someone with azoospermia can't make a woman pregnant."
Alex walked out of the hospital with the report, feeling the sunlight but no warmth, only coldness.
He couldn't believe Sharon's words had come true; the one with infertility was actually him!
Alex thought angrily, 'Why me? Why does it have to be me!'
Clutching the report tightly, Alex's eyes filled with rage.
He cursed inwardly, 'That bitch Ava dared to deceive me! I won't let her get away with this!'
Moreover, there had to be something fishy with the previous check-up reports for him and Sharon!
Thinking of this, Alex called Joseph, gritting his teeth. "Find out who messed with the previous check-up reports for Sharon and me!"
