Chapter 278 This Must Be Seb's Child

'Paul's been snooping around Sharon and having secret meet-ups with Zachary. What's his deal?' Seb couldn't help but wonder.

Thinking about how the Cook Group had been all over that amusement park project, Seb's face turned stone cold.

Could Paul have turned on him?

Nah, over the years, plenty of folks tried to squeeze Silvercrest Group's secrets out of Paul, but no one ever pulled it off. Paul wouldn't betray him.

Plus, Paul had dug into Sharon before; he had to have some other angle.

After mulling it over, Seb dialed up Rufus.

"Mr. Smith, what's up?" Rufus's voice was a bit shaky. Whenever Seb hit him up this late, it usually meant trouble.

Rufus had grown to dread Seb's late-night calls.

"You and Paul are tight. Noticed anything weird about him lately?"

Rufus hesitated, thinking about the time Paul showed him a photo and asked about it, unsure if he should spill the beans to Seb.

He had a hunch that Sharon's kid might be Seb's, based on Paul's reaction.

But seeing how Seb and Sharon acted around each other, they didn't seem close, so Rufus doubted himself.

While he hesitated, Seb's patience wore thin.

"Spit it out," Seb ordered coldly.

Rufus bit his lip and decided to keep it under wraps for now. "Mr. Smith, I haven't seen anything odd with Paul."

"What did Paul say to you by your desk before you headed back to Metropolis that day?"

"Just some work stuff."

Seb wasn't buying it. "There are cameras outside the CEO's office. You sure you want me to pull the footage to get the truth?" Seb's voice was icy, even through the phone, making Rufus's legs feel like jelly.

Between crossing Paul and crossing Seb, Rufus knew which was worse.

He ratted out Paul without a second thought. "Paul showed me a photo of a kid and asked if it was Ms. Roach's."

Surprise flickered in Seb's eyes, and he asked coldly, "Why would Paul suddenly dig into Sharon's kid?"

Rufus clammed up again, unsure if he should share his suspicion with Seb.

"Rufus, you've been with me for years. You know my patience is thin."

Rufus took a deep breath and slowly said, "Mr. Smith, that day at the amusement park, before Ms. Roach's kid put on a mask, I saw his profile. He looks almost exactly like you."

As his words hung in the air, the other end of the line went dead silent.

Rufus's heart pounded. He feared Seb's sudden silence more than his anger; it usually spelled trouble.

After a few seconds of eerie silence, just as Rufus was about to speak, the call abruptly ended.

Rufus didn't dare call back. He quickly turned off his phone, so even if Seb tried to reach him, he could blame it on a dead battery.

After hanging up, Seb immediately dialed another number.

"Get me a photo of Sharon's kid, ASAP." With that, he walked to the window, his stern yet unreadable face reflecting in the glass.

The next morning, after Sharon dropped Demetrius off at school, she rushed to the lab.

In her hurry, she didn't notice that after she left, Demetrius walked out of the school and flagged down a cab.

Once in the cab, Demetrius gave the address of the Silvercrest Group branch, turned on his phone's navigation, and cranked the volume to the max.

The cab driver couldn't help but chuckle at the navigation voice coming from the backseat. This kid might look young, but he was sharp.

The school wasn't far from the Silvercrest Group branch. It took Demetrius less than half an hour to get there.

After paying the fare, Demetrius looked up at the towering skyscraper, his eyes gleaming with curiosity.

He walked into the building with his backpack, but the front desk stopped him.

"Hey, kid, who are you looking for..." The receptionist's eyes widened in shock, staring at the mini version of Seb in disbelief.

'Is this Mr. Smith's kid? But Mr. Smith isn't married, right? Could this be his secret love child?' the receptionist wondered.

In an instant, she felt like she had stumbled upon something big.

Seeing the receptionist staring at him without speaking, Demetrius frowned. "I'm here to see Mr. Smith."

The receptionist remained silent.

The way he spoke was just like Seb, like they were cut from the same cloth.

After several seconds, the receptionist found her voice. "Hold on a sec, I'll check."

She picked up the phone and called the CEO's office. "Mr. Harris, there's a kid downstairs who looks a lot like Mr. Smith."

"I'll be right down," Paul replied.

Hanging up, Paul glanced at the meeting room and then headed downstairs.

As soon as he stepped out of the elevator, Paul saw Demetrius standing at the front desk and quickened his pace.

Seeing Demetrius's face, Paul couldn't help but gasp.

He was sure this was Seb's kid.

The receptionist greeted Paul politely, "Mr. Harris."

Paul looked at her coldly. "If you don't want to lose your job, keep your mouth shut."

Then Paul turned to Demetrius and gently said, "I'm Mr. Smith's secretary. Mr. Smith is busy right now and can't see you. Where's your school? Do you want me to take you back or contact your mom?"

Hearing Paul mention contacting his mom, Demetrius's face changed, and he quickly shook his head. "Don't call my mom. I came here secretly."

"Then let me take you back to school. Otherwise, if the teachers find out you're missing, they'll call your mom."

Demetrius insisted, a bit reluctant, "But I haven't seen the person I want to see yet."

He needed to confirm if Seb was his biological father.

Looking into Demetrius's serious eyes, Paul said, "Kid, your mom doesn't know you're here, right? She probably wouldn't be cool with it. Let me take you back to school, okay? Otherwise, your mom might get really mad if she finds out you came here secretly."

Thinking of Sharon's angry face, Demetrius couldn't help but shrink back.

He knew that if Sharon found out he came to see his potential dad behind her back, she'd be heartbroken.

Seeing Demetrius waver, Paul continued, "Mr. Smith is super busy. He won't see you today. You need an appointment."

Demetrius asked, "Can I see him if I make an appointment?"

Paul shook his head and led Demetrius to a camera blind spot, making sure the cameras couldn't capture his face anymore.

"No, even with an appointment, you'll have to wait. Lots of people want to see Mr. Smith. You might have to wait a month."

Hearing this, Demetrius pouted.

'It would take that long?' he thought, feeling a bit disappointed.
