Chapter 99 This Is the Only Way
David's face darkened. "Don't worry about it. I'll handle it," he muttered.
Clara blinked, then frowned. "What are you planning?"
"None of your business. Just do your own thing and leave the rest to me."
With that, David brushed past Clara and headed to the study.
Once inside, he thought for a moment and remembered Sandra's birthday was next month. Perfect timing for his plan.
Once Seb and Sharon hooked up, he'd swoop in and blackmail Seb. No way Seb would refuse to cough up the cash.
David exhaled, his earlier frustration about the funds melting away.
To David, women were just pawns. Even if Seb liked Clara, he could drug her, send her to Seb's bed, and smooth things over later.
As for Alex, he'd find a better match for him down the line.
Silvercrest Group President's Office.
Paul walked in with some documents and saw Seb deep in thought, frowning. That was unusual.
"Mr. Smith, these need your attention tonight."
"Just leave them there."
Paul nodded, set the documents down, and turned to leave.
Just as he reached the door, Seb's voice stopped him. "Hey, I have something to ask you."
Paul turned back. "What is it?"
He racked his brain, wondering if he'd messed something up.
"Do all women want to get married?"
Paul let out a breath, surprised. Seb never talked about stuff like this; his concern was all about business, all the time.
It had to be something Sharon said when they met earlier.
Paul paused before answering. "I guess so. A woman's youth is precious. My ex-girlfriend used to dream about our married life."
"Then why is she an ex?"
"Because I didn't want to get married. Didn't want to waste her time."
Seb frowned. "Got it. You can go back to work."
Once the office was quiet again, Seb tapped his fingers on the desk, deep in thought.
Marriage had never crossed Seb's mind. He believed as long as two people were happy together, that was enough.
He liked Sharon, but marriage? No way. A piece of paper couldn't keep people together forever. Just look at Alex and David—they cheated despite being married.
Seb knew he liked Sharon, but not enough to marry her.
After weighing the pros and cons, he decided to set boundaries with Sharon before figuring out his thoughts and their next plan.
He couldn't give her what she wanted, and dragging it out would only hurt her.
Seb picked up the phone. "Get a caregiver for Sharon at the hospital and arrange daily meals until she's discharged."
Paul was puzzled but quickly replied, "Got it. I'll handle it."
After hanging up, Seb pushed down the discomfort in his chest and got back to work.
In the following days, neither Alex nor Seb visited Sharon at the hospital.
Sharon was relieved. She followed the doctor's and nurses' advice, went to bed early, woke up early, took her meds, and changed her bandages on time. She recovered quickly.
She had a physical scheduled at the same hospital, so she decided to get a check-up.
She didn't trust Clara, after all.
Sharon had no idea that as soon as she finished her check-up, Clara got the news.
Clara smirked. "You'll get the money tonight. You know what to put in the report."
"Don't worry. I got it."
"Pleasure doing business."
The day before her discharge, Brian finally got back to her.
Sharon planned to meet Brian after she got out, but this time, they chose a cozy coffee shop instead of a bar.
When she saw Brian, she was shocked.
In just a short time, his face was covered in bruises, his left hand was in a cast, and he had a crutch beside him.
"Mr. Hill, what happened? Was it because of the investigation?"
Brian handed her a USB drive. "Ms. Wright, this is all I could find. I can't dig any deeper; it's too dangerous."
Seeing he didn't want to talk about his injuries, Sharon didn't push. She took the USB drive and nodded.
"Got it. I'll transfer the payment soon. Thanks for your hard work, and I'm sorry about your injuries."
Brian didn't say anything more. He stood up. "Ms. Wright, take care."
Shortly after, Brian's phone buzzed with a money transfer notification. Sharon had sent three times the agreed amount.
After a moment's hesitation, Brian sent her a message: [Ms. Wright, this is more complicated than you think. I advise you to stop investigating and cherish your peaceful life.]
Sharon read the message and pursed her lips.
This involved David, and the Smith family had deep roots in Metropolis. If she went after David, the Smith family would come after her.
She didn't have the money or the connections to take on the Smith family.
Sharon's grip on the USB drive tightened, her knuckles turning white, but her eyes were resolute.
That accident not only bankrupted Robert Pharmaceuticals but also killed over twenty workers, destroying more than twenty families. Yet the mastermind was still free, living a life of luxury.
'Why should it be like this?'
Even if she couldn't succeed, Sharon would give it her all. She didn't want to live aimlessly anymore. [Mr. Hill, thank you, but I have no other choice.]
After sending the message, Sharon stood up, paid, and left.
Back home, she copied the files from the USB drive to her computer. After reading through them, she decided to change her approach and start with Ted.
Brian's investigation had uncovered many of Ted's crimes over the years, all linked to David. Ted must have secretly helped David a lot.
After thinking it over, Sharon decided to meet with Irene.
Irene was the one who had initially told her that the Robert Pharmaceuticals accident wasn't an accident. Maybe she knew more.
Sharon created an encrypted document to store the information and hid the USB drive in the bottom compartment of her vanity table, finally feeling at ease.
A knock on the door, and the maid's voice came from the hallway.
"Ms. Wright, dinner is ready."
Sharon responded, closed her computer, and went downstairs to find Alex in the dining room, video-calling a subordinate on his laptop.
Seeing Sharon, he said, "We'll continue the meeting at eight tonight."
After ending the call, Alex set the laptop aside and looked at Sharon. "I asked Joseph to pick you up, but he said you checked out early."
"Yeah."
Sharon sat down across from Alex, and soon a maid placed a bowl of soup in front of her.
"Ms. Wright, Mr. Smith had the kitchen specially prepare this for you."
"Thank you."
Noticing Sharon's cold demeanor, Alex frowned. "Are you upset because I didn't pick you up from the hospital?"
