Chapter 459 You Should Ask Kirk
Kirk's face was blank at first, but when he heard that, his eyes went wide. "What did you just say?!"
There was no way Ariana had that kind of money; she must've sold the house Kirk gave her! When Kirk thought about it, his expression turned dark.
He gave her that house so she could get away from her past, not to sell it to pay off his debts.
"Mr. Almanza, I need to see her. Can you talk to her for me?"
Seeing Kirk's anxious look, Floyd was quiet for a moment before asking, "Mr. Marshall, is there something wrong with this money?"
Kirk's face tightened, and it took him a few seconds to respond, "No... I just want to see her. I don't want to accept this money."
Floyd gave Kirk a knowing look, said nothing, and left the detention center. Just as he walked out of the police station, his assistant called. "Ariana did get the money from selling the house. It's in downtown Metropolis, and it was sold just yesterday. Everything checks out."
Floyd frowned, thought for a moment, and then said quietly, "Look into Kirk. With Ariana's situation, she couldn't afford a house like that."
He suspected Kirk had embezzled Silvercrest Group's pharmaceutical research funds to buy the house.
If the money for the house came from Kirk's embezzled funds, the big question was: why put the house in Ariana's name if they were just colleagues?
Unless... there was more to their relationship than just being colleagues.
Hanging up the phone, Floyd went straight to find Ariana. But when he told her Kirk wanted to see her, Ariana flatly refused and was pretty cold about it. "I've done all I can for him; seeing him doesn't matter anymore."
Floyd looked at Ariana's indifferent demeanor, feeling even more puzzled. "Ms. Stout, the investigation into Kirk's embezzlement is still ongoing. I hope you can cooperate. Are you really just colleagues with him?"
"I've looked into it, and with your situation, you shouldn't be able to buy a three-bedroom apartment in downtown Metropolis outright. That house was recently transferred to your name. Was it bought with Kirk's embezzled funds?" Floyd stared at Ariana, watching for any change in her expression.
Ariana turned her head, avoiding Floyd's gaze, "Mr. Almanza, this is my private matter. I don't need to explain it to you."
She bit her lower lip, a hint of guilt flashing in her eyes.
But remembering Kirk's assurance that no one would find out the house belonged to her, she felt a bit more at ease, and her expression calmed.
Floyd frowned slightly. "Ms. Stout, this could affect Kirk's sentencing. If the house was bought with embezzled funds, the situation is very serious."
Ariana looked at him coldly, her eyes full of displeasure. "The house is mine and has nothing to do with the embezzled funds. If you want to know about the funds, ask Kirk, not me."
Seeing her reaction, Floyd became even more convinced the house was related to Kirk. After all, who gave $5 million to an ordinary colleague?
Seeing she wasn't going to say more, and knowing further questioning would get nowhere, Floyd didn't push it. He stood up and said, "Ms. Stout, I must make it clear that if the house you sold is tied to Kirk's embezzled funds, you might also be at risk of getting sued by Silvercrest Group."
Ariana's hand tightened unconsciously, and after a while, she said coldly, "I said, my house has nothing to do with Kirk. Mr. Almanza, if you have nothing else, please leave. I need to pack my things."
