Chapter 596 Do We Really Have to Do This?
Mary smiled, "Take a wild guess."
Jeremy squinted and reached for the call button above the hospital bed, but Mary quickly grabbed his hand.
"Jeremy, don't you think you're being a bit heartless towards Ewan and me?"
"Mary, Ewan is my son, and so is Gareth. Ewan caused Gareth to lose a leg. Shouldn't he pay for that?"
"You only have two sons. One's already lost a leg, and you want the other to be crippled too? If I were you, I'd be grooming Ewan as the sole heir right now."
Jeremy's face fell. "Bring Ewan back first, then we'll talk."
Mary smirked and said slowly, "No need. As long as you're alive, you can help me and Ewan. How you stay alive doesn't matter."
With that, Mary called out, "Anthony, come in."
Anthony opened the door and entered the room, surprised to see Mary holding Jeremy down on the bed.
"Mary, what do you need?"
Jeremy's face was grim. "Anthony, can't you see Mary is holding me hostage? Get her off me!"
His voice was filled with anger, but Anthony, the man he addressed, stood still, head bowed, as if he hadn't heard.
"Anthony!"
Jeremy's voice was now filled with frustration, his gaze at Anthony burning with rage.
If looks could kill, Anthony would have died several times over.
Mary chuckled, "Jeremy, don't waste your energy. The people you left in my care while you were sick are now loyal to me. They won't follow your orders anymore."
"What did you say?"
Jeremy's eyes widened in shock.
"I trained those people for over a decade. How could they be yours?"
"You did train them for years, but you always made them do the dirty work. Back then, as the head of the Stoll family, they had no choice but to obey you or face death. But now, you're practically a cripple. Staying with you is as good as a death sentence."
Mary hadn't planned to use these people against Jeremy, but his cruelty towards Ewan made her realize that she and Ewan would never matter as much to him as those other people in the estate.
If that was the case, she would fight for herself.
Mary didn't believe she couldn't outdo Carolyn!
Jeremy trembled with rage, struggling to push Mary away but failing.
After being in a coma for so long, his body was weak, his strength comparable to a child's.
"Mary, I'll kill you!"
Mary's eyes flashed with disdain. She looked at Anthony and said, "Get some of that poison Carolyn used on him before. A small dose. I need Jeremy alive."
"Yes, ma'am."
Anthony left, and the door closed behind him. Mary released Jeremy.
Sensing his chance, Jeremy pressed the call button.
This time, Mary didn't stop him. She watched with a smile, unafraid.
Jeremy's hands clenched tightly. "The doctor is yours too?"
"Correct. I replaced them to prevent Carolyn from harming you again. I didn't expect this benefit."
"You!"
Jeremy was so furious he passed out.
Mary sat down, her expression calm as she dialed a number on her phone. "Bring Ewan back."
Mary had known when Carolyn's people took Ewan.
She hadn't rescued him immediately, intending to use the situation to test Jeremy's loyalty to Carolyn.
She hadn't expected Jeremy to be so heartless towards her and Ewan.
After hanging up, Mary looked at the unconscious Jeremy, her gaze growing colder as she thought of all she'd done for him over the years.
Soon, a doctor knocked and entered.
"Mary, is something wrong with Jeremy?"
Mary looked at the doctor. "From now on, I don't want his condition to improve. You know what to do."
The doctor was shocked but quickly nodded. "Yes, Mary, I understand."
"Good. You can go now."
An hour later, Ewan was brought to the hospital room by Mary's men.
He took a deep breath and entered.
Seeing Mary sitting by the bed, lost in thought, Ewan approached.
"Mom, did Dad have me rescued?"
Mary looked up at him. "No, it was me. Your father wanted to bring you back to make you lose a leg like Gareth."
Ewan's face turned pale with disbelief. "Mom, are you lying to me?"
Since he could remember, Jeremy had always been there for him and Mary, doting on him.
Even when he messed up, Jeremy never laid a hand on him, always teaching him and helping him solve problems.
But now, Jeremy wanted him to lose a leg for Gareth!
Ewan looked at the unconscious Jeremy, his eyes filled with sadness and disappointment.
"Ewan, I'm not lying. Sit down. I have something to tell you."
Mary explained how she had turned Jeremy's people to her side over the years and planned to fight Carolyn for control of the Stoll family. Ewan was shocked, collapsing into a chair.
"Mom, wasn't Darcy the one doing all this?"
"He was following my orders. I pretended to be clueless because I thought your father would protect us. But now that he wants you to lose a leg for Gareth, I know he's no longer our support."
If Jeremy hadn't sided with Gareth, Mary might have remained the meek woman she had been.
But now, she had to ensure Ewan inherited the Stoll family.
First, she had to deal with Carolyn and Gareth.
Ewan looked at Mary, her familiar face now seeming strange.
"Mom, maybe we shouldn't fight Gareth and Carolyn. We could take the money Dad gave us and go somewhere no one knows us."
Since Gareth's accident, Ewan had lived in fear of Gareth and Carolyn's revenge.
When Gage's men took him at the airport, he was terrified, thinking Gareth and Carolyn had discovered the truth.
That day in captivity was the longest, most painful day of Ewan's life.
He never wanted to live in fear again. If they continued to oppose Carolyn, they might die horribly.
Mary looked at him. "Ewan, do you really think Carolyn will let us go? Or that Gareth's accident can be hidden forever?"
Ewan's face turned ashen, his body trembling.
"Mom, I don't know what to do. I'm scared."
Mary stood before Ewan, placing her hands on his shoulders. "Ewan, look at me."
Under Mary's commanding tone, Ewan mustered the courage to lift his head.
"Our only option is to fight Carolyn and Gareth. If we win, you'll never have to worry about Gareth finding out because I won't let him live. If we lose, the outcome will be the same as if we didn't fight."
"This is our chance to end it all. Think carefully. Do you want to fight?"
Ewan swallowed hard, taking a moment before speaking. "Okay, Mom, I'll fight!"
Mary smiled with satisfaction. "That's my boy."
As they spoke, Jeremy woke up.
Seeing Ewan, his emotions flared, his eyes burning with anger. "Ewan, you caused Gareth's accident, making him lose a leg! I won't forgive you!"
Before he could finish, Mary slapped him.
The sound of the slap stunned both Jeremy and Ewan.
Neither had expected Mary to hit Jeremy.
"You dare hit me? Mary, you must be tired of living!"
For over twenty years, Mary had been obedient, which allowed her to have Ewan and stay by Jeremy's side for so long.
But at that moment, Jeremy realized he had never truly known Mary.
Mary's expression was cold. "So what if I hit you? Jeremy, you brought this on yourself."
"You! Mary, I won't let your plan succeed. I'll give the Stoll family to Carolyn, not you and Ewan!"
Mary chuckled, her tone mocking. "Since you woke up, Carolyn hasn't visited you once. Who do you think wants you dead the most in the Stoll family?"
Jeremy's face paled, silent.
"You must have guessed. Carolyn wants you dead the most. With you gone, the Stoll family is hers."
"Better her than you!"
"Whether it's me or not is no longer your decision."
As Mary finished speaking, the door opened, and Anthony entered, handing her a glass bottle of white powder.
"Mary, here's the medicine. A gram a day for seven days will induce a coma."
Mary took the bottle, smiling. "Thank you. You can rest now."
After Anthony left, Ewan looked at Mary. "Mom, this medicine..."
"It's for your father."
Ewan instinctively looked at Jeremy, his hands clenching.
"Mom, do we really have to do this?"
