Chapter 199 Can the Smith Family Still Protect You?
Sharon glanced at the invitation in Leo's hand. She hadn't bought a birthday gift yet, so maybe this jewelry auction wasn't a bad idea. But she didn't want to owe Leo anything.
"No, thanks. Not interested."
Leo looked a bit helpless. "Sharon, are you still mad about Robert?"
Sharon stayed calm. "That's between him and me. Nothing to do with you."
Leo seemed a bit hurt. "But we're family!"
"In Karen's mind, I'm not part of the family. It's you three."
"She and I are different! To me, you're family."
Leo's expression was intense, his gaze earnest.
Sharon was silent for a moment, then looked up. "But we're just not meant to be family."
The hallway fell silent, so quiet they could hear each other's breathing.
Emotions surged in Leo's eyes, but he stayed silent. He lowered his eyes. "I know you don't want any contact with me. I'll give this invitation to Ashley. If you're interested, you can go with her."
With that, Leo walked past Sharon and left.
The next morning, as soon as Sharon walked into the lab, Ashley came up to her.
"Sharon, Leo gave me two tickets to the jewelry auction. Let's go together?"
Sharon didn't expect Leo to actually do that. She shook her head. "No, I have plans."
"I haven't even told you which day it is. How do you know you have plans? You just don't want to go with me, do you?"
Ashley pouted, eyes full of dissatisfaction.
"No, it's just that you can go with Leo and get closer. Don't you want to pursue him?"
"Yes, I do."
Ashley's eyes showed hesitation. When Leo gave her the tickets, he mentioned Sharon had been in a bad mood and asked her to take Sharon to the auction to cheer her up.
"But I still want to go with you. He must be clueless about jewelry. Please come with me, okay?"
Sharon hesitated but still refused. "Ashley, let him accompany you. I really don't want to go."
Seeing her firm attitude, Ashley knew she couldn't persuade her.
Once Sharon made up her mind, she wouldn't change it for anyone.
"Alright then."
During lunch, Ashley told Leo about it.
"Leo, she doesn't want to go. How about you go with me?"
Ashley cautiously tested the waters, and Leo saw right through it.
Leo lowered his eyes, his handsome profile looking a bit cold. After a few seconds, he finally smiled slightly.
"No, thanks. I'm not interested in jewelry. Ask another friend to go with you."
Ashley bit her lip, about to muster the courage to invite him again, but Leo picked up his tray and stood up.
"I'm done eating. Take your time."
Without caring about Ashley's reaction, Leo turned and left.
Back in his office, Leo sat at his desk, pondering how to make Sharon less resistant to him. If their relationship stayed strained, his feelings for Sharon would have to stay buried forever.
After some thought, Leo had an idea.
Soon, Ashley returned, looking disappointed that Leo hadn't agreed to the jewelry auction.
Leo smiled and said, "Ashley, I thought about it. I don't have plans that day, so I'll go with you."
Ashley's eyes lit up. "Really?"
"Yes," Leo said gently. "I gave you the tickets. If Sharon isn't going, I should accompany you."
"Great! See you at the auction!"
"I'll pick you up from your place."
Ashley was surprised. 'In just ten minutes, Leo's attitude changed so much?' she wondered. But she didn't overthink it. She was confident she could make him like her if they spent time alone.
"Okay, I'll send you the address later."
All afternoon, Ashley kept talking to Sharon about Leo. She asked about his past and what kind of girls he liked.
"Sharon, what should I wear to the auction?"
Sharon thought for a moment. "Just wear something casual. No need to dress too formally."
Generally, these small private auctions weren't as grand as large ones. Attendees dressed comfortably.
"Okay, what color does Leo like?"
Sharon felt a bit helpless and handed her a test tube. "How would I know? Ask him yourself. Focus on your work. The next steps are crucial, and you can't be distracted."
"Alright."
After Sharon's reminder, Ashley worked diligently until the end of the day, not mentioning Leo again.
In the evening, as Ashley and Sharon finished their experiment and walked out of the lab, they saw Leo standing nearby.
Seeing Ashley, Leo smiled. "Ashley, are you free tonight? Let's have dinner together."
"Yes, let me change my clothes!"
"Sure, no rush. Take your time."
Ashley hurried to the office, leaving Sharon and Leo at the lab entrance.
Sharon nodded coldly at Leo and turned to walk to the office.
As soon as she stepped in, Ashley pulled her aside.
"Sharon, how do I look now?"
Ashley looked at her nervously, eyes full of anticipation. She had put on light makeup, her eyes sparkling, and her lips glossy and smooth.
"You look great."
"Good, then. See you tomorrow!"
Ashley left. Watching her disappear, Sharon couldn't help but smile.
After packing up, Sharon was about to leave when her phone rang.
As soon as she answered, a cold voice came from the other end.
"Sharon, you got me locked up for so long. I won't let you off easily!"
Recognizing David's voice, Sharon's eyes turned cold. "Don't forget, I have evidence of your crimes. If you trouble me or my family, that evidence will go online. Do you think the Smith family can still protect you then?"
