Chapter 272 Paul's Call
Demetrius's profile gave Rufus a weird sense of déjà vu, but he couldn't quite place where he'd seen him before.
Before he could get a better look, Sharon had already slapped a mask on Demetrius.
Sharon stood up and looked at Seb, trying to play it cool as she said, "Mr. Smith, Mr. Warren, what a small world. What brings you guys here?"
Seb nodded, "The company’s got this amusement park project, so we’re here to check it out."
As he spoke, his eyes landed on Demetrius, who was clinging to Sharon.
Demetrius was staring right back at him, and in that split second, Seb felt something he couldn't put into words.
He usually found kids annoying, but with Demetrius, it was different.
"This kid..." Seb started to say.
But before he could finish, Sharon instinctively pulled Demetrius behind her. Realizing she might've overreacted, she forced a smile and said, "He's my kid, a bit shy. Since you’re here for work, Mr. Smith, I won’t keep you. Bye."
With that, Sharon didn't give Seb a chance to respond and quickly dragged Demetrius away.
Once they were out of sight, Rufus couldn't help but say, "I didn't know Ms. Roach had a kid. Never heard she got married."
Seb pulled his gaze back and said coldly, "Let's go."
The whole afternoon, Seb was kinda out of it.
That weird feeling from locking eyes with Demetrius kept bugging him, and he couldn't stop thinking about the kid's eyes.
He figured he must be exhausted and getting distracted by random stuff.
Once the Aidamore amusement park project was wrapped up, he planned to take a few days off to chill.
On the flip side, ever since bumping into Seb, Sharon had been all over the place.
Demetrius noticed, and though he didn't say anything, a thoughtful look crossed his face.
Since running into Seb again, Sharon had been racking her brain on how to keep Seb from finding out about Demetrius, even thinking about sending Demetrius abroad, not noticing his unusual silence.
When they got home, Demetrius suddenly asked, "Mom, is that man we saw today my dad?"
Hearing that, Sharon froze, her face going pale.
Since Demetrius could remember, he had never seen his dad, and there wasn't a single photo of him at home.
When Demetrius saw other kids with their dads, he had asked Sharon, stumbling over his words, where his dad was.
Sharon had told him that his dad had gone to a faraway place before he was born and might never come back.
As Demetrius grew older and learned to read, he figured out that the "faraway place" Sharon mentioned was heaven, meaning his dad had passed away.
Realizing that for the first time, he didn't feel sad because he had never had a dad and didn't know what it felt like to have one. His mom treated him well, and that was enough for him.
But sometimes, seeing other kids being carried on their dads' shoulders, he couldn't help but feel a bit envious.
He later noticed that when Sharon saw him envying other kids with dads, she would also feel sad and tried not to show it in front of him, but her eyes would be filled with emotions he couldn't understand.
He didn't know what those emotions were, but he could feel Sharon's frustration.
To avoid making his mom sad, Demetrius stopped looking at other kids with envy.
One day in kindergarten, some kids started calling him a bastard and left him out. Demetrius fought back, and Sharon had to come to the school.
It was the first time he saw Sharon really mad. Later, those kids and their parents apologized, but the whole thing left a scar on his heart.
He wished he had a dad, so his mom wouldn't have to deal with stuff like that alone.
Zachary was great to him, and he’d be happy if Zachary became his dad.
But deep down, Demetrius wanted his real dad.
Today at the amusement park, seeing that stern-faced guy, Demetrius thought they looked alike. And when Sharon suddenly made him wear a mask, he saw the same guilty look in her eyes as those kids who had done something wrong in kindergarten.
So, he figured he might be that stern-faced guy's kid.
Sharon turned around, looking troubled, "Demetrius, why would you ask that? Didn't I tell you before that your dad went to a faraway place?"
"Then why were you so scared when you saw that man today? And why did you make me wear a mask?"
Sharon's eyes flashed with embarrassment. She realized Demetrius had grown up and wasn't as easy to fool anymore.
"That man is a coworker, and he just got over a cold. I didn't want you to catch it."
Hearing that, Demetrius nodded, but it was unclear if he believed her.
Sharon felt bad for lying to Demetrius, but with Seb having lost his memory, even if he knew Seb was his biological father, Seb might not acknowledge him.
After thinking for a moment, she squatted down in front of Demetrius, explaining, "Demetrius, there are many people in this world who look alike, you..."
Before she could finish, Demetrius nodded, "Mom, I understand. I must have been mistaken."
Hearing him say that, Sharon's frown deepened.
Sometimes she wondered if she should keep deceiving Demetrius like this.
Sharon had planned to tell Demetrius when he was older, but she hadn't expected to run into Seb so soon.
As Sharon was pondering how to explain things to him, Demetrius spoke again, "Mom, I'm tired. I want to sleep."
Sharon pressed her lips together and nodded, "Okay, I'll ask Bonnie to make your favorite dish later."
"Okay."
After Demetrius walked into his room, Sharon sat on the sofa, thinking about how to handle the situation.
Having seen Seb today, Demetrius had already started to suspect, and it was impossible to dispel his doubts with just a few words.
She hadn't expected that just one meeting with Seb would make Demetrius suspect that Seb was his biological father.
As she was deep in thought, her phone suddenly rang.
Seeing it was an unfamiliar number, Sharon hung up.
But the next second, the call came in again. After a moment of hesitation, she answered it.
A familiar voice came through the phone, and Sharon's phone slipped from her hand.
"Hello, Ms. Roach, or should I say Ms. Wright? It's Paul. I'm at the airport and will be in Aidamore tonight. Let's meet."
Sharon's heart sank, and she quickly picked up the phone and hung up, her eyes filled with panic.
Seb had lost his memory, but Paul hadn't. He knew about her past with Seb.
If Paul found out about Demetrius...
The next second, the phone beeped.
It was a text from Paul.
With trembling hands, Sharon opened it, and her face instantly turned pale.
