Chapter 382 Would You Lie To My Mom?
"Of course I don't want to, but how can I trust you?"
Robert stared at Seb, his eyes cold and filled with doubt, but there was a flicker of hope in them too.
He knew Sharon had fallen into the sea, and surviving that seemed impossible. For the past five years, he had given up hope that she was still alive.
Seb pulled out his phone, opened the photo album, and handed it to Robert.
Robert's eyes widened in shock, his whole body trembling. "Sharon, it's really Sharon. She's alive! Where is she now?"
"Don't worry about that. She's doing fine, but I haven't told her about you yet. Once you're better and can stand, I'll bring her to you."
"Really?" Robert's eyes were filled with anticipation, which quickly turned to guilt and regret. "She probably doesn't want to see me anymore."
The last time Robert and Sharon met five years ago was a disaster. She had said they were no longer family, and she hadn't visited him since.
Robert had regretted it for a long time and had wanted to call Sharon to apologize many times, but Karen had talked him out of it.
Karen said he was doing it for Sharon's own good, and that Sharon would eventually understand his intentions.
Back then, Robert was foolish enough to believe Karen.
Now, thinking back, Robert realized that Sharon wasn't Karen's biological daughter, so why would Karen genuinely care about Sharon's feelings?
But ultimately, it was Robert who had failed as a father.
Robert felt he had let down both Sharon and her mother.
Seb showed no emotion in response to Robert's regret. "Sharon indeed doesn't want to see you. After all, she hasn't tried to find out about you since she returned to Metropolis."
Robert's eyes dimmed, and a bitter smile appeared on his lips.
"She has every right to feel that way. It's my karma."
Robert's eyes were red, his wrinkled face full of sorrow.
"Anyway, what's done is done. Focus on getting better first, and we'll talk about everything else later," Seb said.
"Alright."
Seb turned to leave, but as he reached the door, Robert's weak voice came from behind, tinged with a hint of pleading. "Could you come by occasionally and tell me how Sharon has been these past few years?"
Seb paused for a moment but didn't turn around. "Get better first, and we'll talk about everything else later."
In the living room, Bernice was sitting on the couch, working on a merger proposal.
Hearing footsteps, Bernice looked up at Seb. "Uncle Seb, have you finished your visit? Why don't you stay for dinner tonight?"
Bernice's face was full of expectation, her eyes sparkling as she looked at him.
Seb shook his head. "No, thank you. I'll be troubling you for a while."
If Robert stayed with him, Leo would quickly find out. Keeping him with Bernice was much safer.
"It's no trouble at all. Besides, the contract alone you gave me will earn me hundreds of thousands of dollars. Remember to call me for such good deals in the future."
"Alright, I'm leaving."
"Are you sure you don't want to stay for dinner? It's boring eating alone!" Bernice asked again.
"I don't have time." Seb left the villa without looking back. When he got back home, it was already close to 9 PM.
Sharon was in the living room playing with Demetrius. Hearing the door open, she looked up.
Seb's and Sharon's eyes met briefly before Sharon quickly looked away.
"Where were you attending an event tonight? Why are you back so early?"
Seb paused while hanging his suit jacket and casually mentioned a restaurant name.
Sharon raised an eyebrow. "Sophie was also dining there today. Why didn't she mention seeing you?"
"I was in a private room the whole time, and with so many private rooms, it's normal not to run into each other."
Sharon nodded and dropped the topic, turning to Demetrius with a gentle voice. "Demetrius, your dad is back. Didn't you say you wanted to share what you learned at school today with him?"
Seb washed his hands and rolled up his sleeves as he walked over to the couch, his eyes filled with warmth.
"Demetrius, what did you learn today?"
Demetrius looked up at Seb and said, "My teacher taught us about honesty today. In the morning, a kid lied to his mom about having a stomachache to avoid going to preschool. His mom planned to take him to the hospital, and he was so scared that he told her the truth. My teacher used this example to teach us the importance of honesty, as lying can have serious consequences."
Seb's face stiffened, and he instinctively glanced at Sharon, who wasn't looking at him, allowing him to breathe a sigh of relief.
Seb sat down next to Demetrius, playing with him while saying, "Demetrius, your teacher is right. But there's also something called a 'white lie,' which is a lie told not for oneself but to protect others from harm. Such lies can be forgiven."
Demetrius immediately retorted, "But a lie is still a lie, whether it's a white lie or not."
"You'll understand when you grow up."
As soon as he finished speaking, Sharon's cool voice came from the side. "I think Demetrius is right. A lie is a lie. Sometimes, people think they're doing good for others, but I believe the other person would rather know the truth than be lied to."
Seb looked at her helplessly. "You're right. I was being too subjective."
Seeing that Seb had no intention of coming clean, Sharon stood up. "I'm a bit tired today. You play with Demetrius, and make sure to clean up the toys afterward. I'm going to rest."
"Alright." After Sharon left, Seb seemed a bit distracted.
"Dad, if you're tired too, you can go rest. I can play by myself," Demetrius said.
Sharon often worked late, so Demetrius had learned to entertain himself with his toys.
Seb snapped back to reality. "It's okay, Dad's not tired. Should we move on to the next step..."
Before he could finish, he noticed the castle Demetrius had built, and a look of embarrassment crossed his face. "Demetrius, when did you finish building the castle? I remember you were still working on the walls just now."
"Dad, it's almost ten o'clock now."
Looking into Demetrius's eyes, which were very similar to Sharon's, Seb felt a pang of guilt. "Sorry, I've been preoccupied today and neglected you. I promise it won't happen again."
"Dad, did you lie to Mom? Why are you acting so strange today?"
