Chapter 29 The Flask Suddenly Shattered
'The president of Silvercrest Group, isn't that Seb?' Thinking about her few awkward encounters with Seb, Sharon couldn't help but purse her lips and pondered, 'Maybe Seb and I just don't click naturally?'
Noticing her silence, Susan thought she was nervous and added, "You don't need to worry too much. Just proceed with the experiment as usual tomorrow."
"Yeah, I got it." After hanging up the phone, Sharon opened her computer to review the experiment prepared for the next day. Only after confirming the steps did she go to wash up and sleep.
Sharon had a rough night of sleep, plagued by multiple nightmares about Seb. She woke up feeling exhausted, almost forgetting the details of the dreams, just left with a lingering sense of unease.
She arrived at the company in the morning, and by seven, most of her colleagues in the R&D department had not yet arrived. Sharon organized the instruments and chemical reagents needed for the experiment and began her work. If everything went smoothly, she might be able to complete part of the next day's experiment ahead of time.
As it approached work hours, colleagues finally started arriving one after another. Betty walked into the lab yawning and saw Sharon diligently grinding herbs, with several portions of ground powder beside her. She instinctively widened her eyes. "Sharon, you're here so early today!"
"Yes, the investors are coming to check on the experiment's progress today, so I came early to prepare," Sharon replied with a smile.
"Alright." Betty didn't pay much attention, and other colleagues who noticed Sharon's diligent work also began their experiments.
Unintentionally, Elizabeth, who had just stepped into the lab, overheard Betty and Sharon's conversation. Her expression changed, and she quickly left to find Irene.
The content of their discussion made Irene's eyes flash with a cold glint, seemingly realizing she could use this opportunity for revenge.
Elizabeth hesitated. "Irene, isn't this a bit too much? It's also quite dangerous."
Irene sneered dismissively, "Have you forgotten how badly I was beaten that day? This is just a lesson for Sharon. If you don't do as I say, not even the Robinson family can help your dad with his job."
Hearing this, Elizabeth's face turned pale. Her mother had a car accident half a month ago, and all the surgery and hospital fees had almost drained her savings. If her father couldn't find a job soon, they wouldn't be able to afford the medical bills next month.
Irene's father was an executive at a subsidiary of the Smith Group. As long as Elizabeth pleased Irene, her father could quickly be arranged a job. Thus, Elizabeth's resolve gradually firmed up. "Alright, I'll do as you say."
Hearing this, Irene's lips curled into a cold smile. "Go ahead. As long as you get this done, my dad can arrange a job for your dad tomorrow."
After Elizabeth left, Irene felt secretly pleased, her eyes glancing towards the lab with a mocking smile.
Busy grinding the powder, Sharon placed the powder into beakers in batches, added solvents, and began stirring to dissolve. Once the reaction reached a certain point, she filtered out the residue and then poured the solution into a flask to start distillation, meticulously recording the time and each step in her experiment log.
After repeating several steps, Sharon finally dissolved all the ground powder. Taking advantage of the distillation break, Sharon went to the reagent storage room to get twenty milliliters of dilute sulfuric acid, which she planned to add to the reaction mixture later.
Shortly after, Elizabeth sneaked into the storage room and quietly switched the labels. Her hands trembled slightly from nervousness, as this was her first time plotting something like this.
After completing the switch, Elizabeth quickly left. At this moment, Sharon, having finished the distillation in the lab, began setting up a new reaction apparatus. Just as she was about to light the alcohol lamp, footsteps and conversations echoed from the doorway.
Everyone in the lab looked towards the door. Susan walked in with a bright smile, followed by a dozen people in formal attire, the most noticeable being Seb.
Seb and Sharon's eyes met briefly, but Seb quickly looked away as if he didn't recognize Sharon.
Seeing Sharon, Susan quickly called out, "Sharon, come over. Let me introduce you to Mr. Smith from Silvercrest Group. He's the investor for the asthma treatment drug you're developing."
Sharon walked up to Seb and introduced herself, "Hello, Mr. Smith. I'm Sharon Wright, in charge of the asthma drug development."
Seb smiled slightly. "Hello. We're here to see your progress today. No need to be nervous. Just proceed as usual."
"Alright," Sharon responded.
Susan then said calmly, "Continue with your experiment."
Sharon nodded, turned back to her workstation, and continued operating the equipment. Wearing a white lab coat with her long hair tied back, her focused demeanor caught the attention of many.
Seb raised an eyebrow, secretly surprised. The Sharon before him seemed entirely different from the one who used to be a full-time housewife for Alex, now full of energy and vitality.
After lighting the alcohol lamp, Sharon quickly noted in her logbook: [8:37 AM, started heating.]
When the thermometer in the Erlenmeyer flask showed seventy-five degrees, Sharon began adding the dilute sulfuric acid to the flask.
However, as soon as she added a few milliliters, the solution in the flask began to boil rapidly.
Realizing something was wrong, Sharon quickly stopped, but it was too late. With a loud bang, the flask suddenly shattered, and the liquid and shards flew everywhere.
Everyone in the lab panicked and backed away. Susan's face turned pale, and she was about to tell Seb to leave quickly, but he had already rushed towards Sharon.
"Mr. Smith!" Susan called out anxiously, thinking that if anything happened to Seb in the lab, she would be in big trouble.
Sharon covered her face with one hand and retreated. Her hand, stained with acid, quickly developed several black scars. The pain almost made her scream.
Suddenly, a suit jacket was swiftly draped over her head, and her wrist was tightly grasped by Seb. Through the gap in the jacket, she glimpsed his dry, well-defined hand, and the warmth from his grip made her pause for a moment.
