Chapter 401 The Softest Knife in the World

"Are you saying that if I admit I'm jealous, you'll comfort me?"

They were super close, and Seb's warm breath tickled Sharon's ear like a feather.

Sharon looked up at him, a smile playing on her lips. "Yep."

"I'm jealous. So, how are you gonna comfort me?"

Without missing a beat, Sharon cupped his face and kissed him. "Relax, I only have eyes for you. I won't even look at other guys."

Her eyes sparkled like a thousand stars, and Seb saw his own reflection in them.

Seeing Seb just staring at her, Sharon raised an eyebrow. "Mr. Smith, not happy with my way of comforting you?"

Seb grabbed the back of her neck and kissed her.

When the kiss ended, their clothes were a bit messy.

Seb kissed her collarbone, his voice low and husky. "I'm very satisfied."

After spending some time in the car, they got back to the villa past midnight.

As soon as they walked in, Dana came up to them. "Mr. Smith, Ms. Roach, you're back. Want some food to help sober up?"

Seb always drank a lot at parties, and Dana usually had some food ready to help him sober up.

"No need, I didn't drink much tonight. Dana, it's late; you should go rest," Seb said.

Dana nodded. "Okay."

After she left, Sharon raised their clasped hands and shook them. "I'm going to my room now. Can you let go of me?"

A hint of reluctance flashed in Seb's eyes, but he let go of her hand. "Alright, get some rest. Goodnight."

"Goodnight," Sharon said.

The next morning, as soon as Sharon finished breakfast, Seb handed her two documents. "These are the deeds to the villas the Bridges family promised you. All the paperwork is done."

Sharon looked surprised. "That was fast."

"Yep," Seb nodded.

Sharon wasn't in a hurry, so she skimmed through the documents and set them aside. "Ayla must feel pretty bad. She didn't even hurt me, yet she had to give up two villas."

Seb's eyes darkened, and he said coldly, "She'll pay for what she did last night."

"The Bridges family already gave me two houses. Don't do anything else. I don't want this to mess up Silvercrest Group's deal with the Bridges Group," Sharon said.

Seb glanced at her, his voice softening. "Don't worry, I know what I'm doing."

Sharon wanted to say more, but his phone suddenly rang.

His expression turned grim after he answered the call. "I have to go out for a bit. Don't wait for me for lunch."

Seeing him rush to the door, Sharon looked surprised. "Is something wrong with the company?"

She had known Seb for a long time and rarely saw him so anxious.

Seb paused and nodded. "Yeah."

He quickly changed his shoes and left. Sharon watched his car drive away before turning back into the villa.

Around noon, Sharon suddenly got a message from Jake.

Jake: [Sharon, my throat's been bothering me, so I went to the hospital for a check-up. I didn't expect to see Ariana! And guess what? Kirk, who had a fracture before, is being taken care of by Ariana at the hospital!]

Seeing Jake's message, Sharon changed her expression.

Ariana had previously told her she wouldn't have much contact with Kirk, so Sharon hadn't paid attention. She didn't expect that they had progressed to the point where Ariana was taking care of Kirk in the hospital.

Sharon immediately typed back to ask Jake which hospital he was at and called a car to go there directly.

When she got out of the car, Jake was already waiting at the hospital entrance. He immediately came up to her when he saw her. "Sharon, I'll take you there. Kirk is in Building 2."

Sharon nodded and followed Jake to the inpatient department. Just fifty feet from the entrance, Sharon suddenly stopped.

The figure walking into the inpatient department was none other than Seb, who had said he was going to the company this morning!

She couldn't mistake that back.

Sharon stood frozen, her mind blank for a moment. Seb had lied to her again.

Who in this inpatient department was worth Seb lying to her repeatedly?

Jake, noticing the lack of footsteps behind him, stopped and turned around to see Sharon lagging behind. "Sharon, you..."

Before Jake could finish, Sharon quickly walked towards the inpatient department.

Jake was stunned for a few seconds before catching up. "Sharon, no need to rush. I know which room Kirk is in."

Sharon looked at him, her face expressionless. "Jake, I have something else to do right now. I won't be looking for Ariana. I'll ask her about this on Monday at work. You should go back."

Before Jake could say anything, Sharon had already turned and walked away quickly.

Sharon followed Seb until he entered the elevator. She stood in front of the elevator, watching which floors it stopped at.

When the elevator came back down, she started searching floor by floor from the bottom up.

Finally, on the twelfth floor, she saw Seb standing at the door of a ward. He had his back to the door, talking to someone in the bed, completely unaware of her presence.

Sharon took a deep breath, trying to stay calm, planning to confront Seb when he came out.

But after she stood there for just two minutes, a nurse approached her. "Miss, are you looking for someone?"

The nurse's voice was loud enough for Seb to hear inside the ward.

He turned his head casually, and saw Sharon. Then a look of panic flashed across his face. He quickly walked towards her.

As he approached, Sharon saw who was in the hospital bed.

Robert lay there, wearing a breathing mask, eyes closed, looking either asleep or unconscious.

Seeing Robert's frail state, Sharon's eyes filled with disbelief, and she involuntarily took two steps back.

Seeing Sharon not respond, the nurse was about to ask again when the door opened, and Seb came out.

"Mr. Smith, this lady has been staring into the room," the nurse reported.

"Okay, I understand. She's my girlfriend," Seb responded.

The nurse's eyes showed surprise and disappointment. "Oh, she's your girlfriend. I won't disturb you then."

With that, the nurse turned and hurried away.

Seb, fully focused on Sharon, didn't notice the nurse's odd behavior. "Sharon, let me explain."

Sharon didn't say anything and turned to leave.

Seb quickly caught up to her and finally stopped her in front of the elevator. "Sharon, I didn't mean to hide this from you."

Sharon took a deep breath and looked up at him. "All those times you lied to me, it was to come see him?"

"Yes," Seb replied.

Sharon nodded, saying nothing more, her eyes fixed on the elevator display showing the floors.

Seb tried to hold her hand, but she pulled away as soon as he touched her.

"Sharon, I really didn't mean to keep this from you. I just didn't know how to tell you. Your father is in very bad shape. The doctors say he doesn't have much time left," Seb explained.

Sharon's hands slowly clenched. After a long pause, she finally spoke. "I'm very confused right now. Let me calm down for a bit."

Seeing her pale face, Seb's eyes showed a hint of pain. "Alright, I'll stay with you."

"No need." As soon as she finished speaking, the elevator arrived, and Sharon stepped in.

Seb wanted to follow, but she stopped him with just a glance.

Sharon didn't go far. After leaving the elevator, she sat in a pavilion outside the inpatient building, lost in thought.

Over the years, she rarely thought about Robert and didn't pay attention to how he was doing. After all, they had a huge falling out, and she had no expectations of him.

The last time she saw him five years ago, Robert was sick but not as emaciated as he was now.

Seeing him lying in the hospital bed, his hospital gown looking oversized, his hands veiny and covered in age spots, like withered leaves, lifeless and dry, she felt a mix of emotions, and her last bit of resentment disappeared.

Even though Robert had treated her poorly later and only believed Karen, during the years when the Wright family hadn't gone bankrupt, he had genuinely been good to her and doted on her.

As Sharon was lost in thought, she suddenly heard a voice nearby.

"Daddy, I want some chocolate."

"No, you already had some this morning. You can have more tomorrow."

"But I really want some. Just a little bit. Mom won't find out, okay?"

Sharon turned her head and saw a father and daughter walking along the path outside the pavilion.

The man held his daughter's hand in one hand and carried a bag of snacks in the other.

The girl, wearing a hospital gown and with two buns in her hair, had a chubby, adorable face.

"You'll be discharged tomorrow. You can have some then."

"Just a little bit, Daddy! Aren't I your favorite daughter?"

The man chuckled, squatting down to gently pinch her chubby cheeks. "Of course, you're my favorite daughter, but you can only have chocolate once a day."

The girl pouted reluctantly. "Okay then."

"Alright, don't be upset. When you're discharged tomorrow, I'll take you to your favorite seafood restaurant."

The girl, who had been a bit down, immediately perked up, her eyes sparkling as she looked at the man. "Really?"

"Really."

"Daddy, you're the best. I love you the most!"

Their voices gradually faded as they walked away, and Sharon turned her gaze back, suddenly recalling many childhood memories.

Back then, whether Robert went to the factory or the company, he always took her along. She would obediently stay by his side, sometimes falling asleep while waiting for him to finish work. When she woke up, there would always be her favorite snacks beside her.

She thought she had forgotten these memories, but it turned out she was just deceiving herself.

In certain moments, those forgotten memories would flood back, like the softest knife in the world, cutting into her heart, and causing both pain and sorrow.

She wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes, took a deep breath, and walked back towards the inpatient building.
