Chapter 348 There Is Only Fear and Hatred
Grace clenched her jaw, panic flashing in her eyes.
If Sophie didn't up the bid, Grace was screwed. However, judging by Sophie’s earlier demeanor, it was undoubtedly deliberate, making it impossible to raise the price further.
"Thirty million dollars, going twice!" the auctioneer called out.
Still, no one budged. That set of jewelry was made of ordinary emeralds; its only merit lay in its pleasing design and held no real collectible value. Only an idiot would drop thirty million on it, let alone bid higher.
Robbie leaned in, whispering angrily, "Didn't you say Sophie would raise the bid?"
Grace bit her lip, tears welling up. "Mr. Owens, I'm sorry, I guessed wrong."
"I only agreed to twenty million. You figure out the rest!" Robbie snapped.
Robbie wasn't dumb; he knew Grace had been playing games with Sophie. He was already regretting giving her a twenty million limit. Normally, that could buy a few sets of jewelry, but Grace had let Sophie play her.
Fear flickered in Grace's eyes as she saw Robbie's dark expression. She didn't dare say another word.
"Thirty million dollars, going three times! Sold!" the auctioneer announced. The crowd turned to Robbie, some even jeering.
"Mr. Owens, your companion's got guts, raising the bid by ten million. Impressive!" someone remarked.
"Haha, well, she is Mrs. Edwards, with the whole Edwards Group behind her. No wonder she's so generous!" another added.
"But I'm curious, is Mr. Owens buying this for Mrs. Edwards, or is she buying it herself?" a third person chimed in.
The jeers made Robbie's face darken, and Grace felt more and more uneasy. How was she going to find ten million dollars?
In the past, she might've sweet-talked Victor into giving her the money. But now, if Victor found out what she did, she couldn't imagine the fallout.
Seeing Grace's worried look, Sophie raised an eyebrow and smirked. "Sharon, look at Grace. She seems stressed about that thirty million," Sophie said, her tone dripping with schadenfreude.
'Trying to mess with me? Grace, know your limits!' she thought.
Sharon glanced at Grace and then looked away. "Sophie, don't do this again. It feels good, but it also ticks off Mr. Owens."
Robbie's face was stormy. Most of his anger was aimed at Grace, but Sophie wasn't off the hook either.
"It's just a food company; I don't care. Even if he's mad, he can't do anything about it!" Sophie declared confidently.
Anyone involved with a married woman like Grace couldn't be a good person. It didn't matter if they offended him.
Seeing Sophie's confidence, Sharon smiled and shook her head. As long as Sophie knew what she was doing. It was just a set of jewelry; it shouldn't be enough to completely piss off Robbie.
Then Grace didn't raise her paddle again, keeping her head down, lost in thought.
As the auction was wrapping up, Grace slipped out to the restroom to call Victor.
When Victor found out Grace had blown thirty million on a set of emerald jewelry, he nearly threw his phone. "Grace, are you out of your mind? Do you have any idea what the Edwards Group is going through? Where am I supposed to find ten million dollars for you? Do you want to bankrupt us?" Victor raged.
Grace sneered, "Victor, don't play dumb. You've made a killing from those deals with Mr. Owens' company. Ten million might be a lot, but it's not impossible for you."
Victor was livid. "Even if I could scrape it together, why would I waste it on some useless baubles?"
To him, jewelry that couldn't be quickly sold was worthless. He wouldn't even spend a million, let alone ten.
"Mr. Owens is only covering twenty million. If you can't come up with the rest, pissing him off will screw up future business. Think about that," Grace said before hanging up.
A little while later, she got a notification of a ten million dollar deposit. She smirked, put away her phone, and headed out.
Just as she left the restroom, she bumped into Seb. Seeing him now, all she felt was fear and hatred. It was because of Seb that she was stuck in this mess, tormented by Victor and played by one man after another. She lowered her head to hide her feelings.
As she walked past Seb, his cold voice cut through the air. "Grace, don't even think about messing with Sharon, or you'll regret it a thousand times over."
Grace's body stiffened. "Mr. Smith, do you really think I can do anything to her now?"
"You better be telling the truth," Seb said icily.
Grace bit her lip, said nothing, and quickly walked away. Seb watched her go, a cold glint in his eyes.
When Grace got back to the auction hall, the final set of jewelry was up for bid, and the room was buzzing. Her eyes locked onto the last set: a sapphire necklace and matching earrings.
Under the lights, the sapphires glowed like deep, serene waters, almost dangerously alluring. Every ray of light created dazzling ripples on their surface. The earrings sparkled like fallen stars.
Grace could already picture herself wearing them, looking stunning.
Seeing her eyes light up with longing, Robbie said coldly, "You know, the final price for this set won't even hit thirty million."
Grace's eyes showed regret.
"Idiot!" Robbie spat. Other than her looks and her boldness in bed, Grace was useless.
Grace bit her lip and kept her head down, saying nothing. She knew Robbie was enraged, and if he didn't release his pent-up anger, she would face the repercussions tonight.
The last set of jewelry went to Zachary for twenty-six million. After getting the jewelry from the staff, Zachary walked straight to Sharon and put the necklace on her.
