Chapter 247 She Can Have a Home of Her Own

After they scarfed down their meal and were about to bounce, they bumped into Zachary, who had just wrapped up a business pow-wow with a client.

"Ms. Wright, Sophie, what are the odds?"

Sophie arched an eyebrow, a smirk playing on her lips. "Yeah, what are the odds?"

Zachary turned to Sharon, his tone soft. "Ms. Wright, did you have any drinks tonight? Need a lift home?"

Sharon shook her head. "Nah, Sophie and I drove here, so we're good, Mr. Cook."

A flicker of disappointment flashed in Zachary's eyes, but he quickly plastered on a smile. "Alright, maybe we can grab dinner together another time."

Sophie grinned. "Sorry, no can do. Sharon's heading to Aidamore in a few days."

Zachary looked stunned. "Why's Ms. Wright going to Aidamore?"

He glanced at Sharon, clearly puzzled.

"I'm planning to work there."

Sharon didn't know Zachary that well and didn't want to spill too much. She lowered her gaze and said, "Mr. Cook, it's getting late. We're outta here. Bye."

Feeling Sharon's chill vibe, Zachary felt a bit bummed.

He wasn't clueless and could tell Sharon wasn't into him.

So, the smile on Zachary's face got a bit forced.

"Alright, goodbye, Ms. Wright."

Sharon nodded and headed towards the parking lot.

Sophie caught up with her, noticing her serious look. Knowing she was probably ticked off, Sophie quickly apologized, "Sharon, I'm sorry. I won't say stuff like that again."

Sharon stopped and looked at her. "Sophie, from what I've seen, Zachary's a nice guy. Since I don't plan to get involved with him, I shouldn't let him know too much about my life. Otherwise, he'll just get hurt."

"I know I messed up. I just thought he's my classmate, and since you're single, I wanted to give him a shot."

"He's a good guy, but I'm not right for him. Plus, I'm not looking to start anything new right now. Don't do this again."

"Okay, I get it. Don't be mad. You scare me when you're mad."

Sharon rolled her eyes at Sophie. "If you're scared, then zip it next time."

"Alright, alright. Whatever you say, I won't go rogue again."

Back home, Sharon tidied up a bit before hitting the sack.

The next morning, she tossed out stuff she didn't need, mailed most of her books, and kept just a few sets of clothes and some books she planned to read soon.

Sharon felt a pang of hesitation as she looked at the empty house, which felt pretty dead.

If it wasn't absolutely necessary, she wouldn't want to bail so soon. After all, she'd been in Metropolis for over twenty years.

After making sure everything was mailed, Sharon bought a ticket for the next morning and debated whether to visit Robert in the hospital.

Since their awkward run-in at the hospital last time, they hadn't been in touch. She had no clue how Robert was doing.

After a lot of back-and-forth, she decided to go.

After all, once she moved to Aidamore, she probably wouldn't be back much.

Having made up her mind, Sharon grabbed her bag and drove to the hospital.

Standing outside the ward, she paused for a moment before gripping the door handle. Just as she was about to open the door, she heard Karen's voice from inside.

"Robert, Sharon's really pushing it. Is she seriously planning to cut ties with you? She hasn't visited you once. It's been Leo taking care of you whenever you're sick. But whatever, I won't say more, or you'll call me nosy again."

The room went dead silent for a few seconds, and Sharon's hand on the door handle froze.

She wanted to hear what Robert would say.

Finally, Robert's weak voice broke the silence. "Don't bring her up in front of me again. I'll just pretend I never had a daughter."

Sharon's hand slowly slipped off the door handle, and she lowered her eyes with a bitter smile.

It seemed Robert was really done with her and didn't want to acknowledge her as his daughter anymore.

But maybe that was for the best. She could leave without any regrets.

Taking a deep breath, Sharon turned and walked away.

Karen watched her disappear from the doorway, a cold glint in her eyes.

Turning back to Robert, she put on a smile. "Alright, I know you. You're just saying that 'cause you're mad. You're still upset she hasn't come to see you, right? If she really showed up, you'd probably be over the moon."

Robert snorted and said nothing more.

After a while, he couldn't help but speak again. "Should I call her? It's not good to keep this going."

"I think you should wait a bit. If you give in now, she might think she's right and keep going down the wrong path. We're doing this for her own good."

Robert stayed quiet, lost in thought.

On the way back, Sharon replayed Robert's words in her head and felt a pang of sadness. She got a bit distracted and didn't notice a car tailing her.

Before Robert got married, he had always been super good to Sharon, almost spoiling her.

Sharon thought, 'But at some point, Robert started to change, slowly but surely.'

Sharon had never bought into the saying that having a stepmom meant the home wasn't hers anymore, but now she totally got it.

'From the moment Robert and Karen got hitched, this home became theirs, not mine.' As she thought about it, Sharon's eyes started to well up.

She mused, 'It's okay. I'll love myself and create a home for me and my unborn baby.'

She instinctively touched her still-flat belly, feeling a sudden sense of hope and anticipation.

Suddenly, the trunk got slammed hard, making the car lurch forward uncontrollably.

Sharon quickly hit the brakes, the tires screeching against the pavement. Even though she wasn't driving fast, the car skidded for about 20 feet before stopping.

Her face turned pale with fright, and she instinctively covered her belly.

Luckily, there was no unusual feeling.

Sharon breathed a sigh of relief and quickly glanced in the rearview mirror. She saw a black van had stopped behind her, and a guy wearing sunglasses was getting out of the driver's seat.

A sense of dread washed over Sharon. She quickly locked the car doors and fumbled for her phone to call the cops.

But in her panic, her hands were shaking, and the phone slipped into the gap between the driver's seat and the door.

Sharon bit her lower lip and hurriedly tried to fish out her phone.

At that moment, there was a loud crash from the back seat window, followed by the sound of shattering glass.

Sharon turned to see the guy with sunglasses holding a stick, with another dude standing beside him.

"What do you want?"
