Chapter 114 Divorce Is Better Than Never Getting Married
It looked like someone was getting impatient.
Sharon tossed the dress aside and grabbed a white V-neck slit dress from the wardrobe. She then let her hair down, straightened it, and put on some light makeup in five minutes before heading out.
Just as she got in the car and was about to buckle up, Alex, sitting on the driver's seat, asked in a deep voice, "Why aren't you wearing the dress I got for you?"
Sharon raised an eyebrow, her expression cold. "It doesn't fit."
Alex, being sharp, got the hint, and his face darkened.
"I'll figure it out," he said.
Sharon smiled slightly. "Let's just go to the party."
With her delicate face and just the right amount of makeup, Sharon looked stunning in her white dress, like a beautiful lily.
Alex's gaze lingered on her, but he knew she didn't trust him. He sighed and started the car without another word.
When they arrived at the Smith mansion, luxury cars were already lined up outside.
The Smith Group and Silvercrest Group were big names in Metropolis. Sandra's birthday party was a hot ticket, drawing all the city's elite.
After getting out, Alex handed the gift to the servant at the door.
They walked through the garden and into the main hall, which was buzzing with laughter and chatter. Notable figures mingled in small groups, and wealthy wives and socialites chatted with smiles that didn't quite reach their eyes.
Sandra sat in the center, beaming, with Clara and Sarah beside her.
"Let's go greet Grandma."
Alex tried to hold Sharon's hand, but she subtly pulled away.
Despite disappointment he didn't push it and walked over to Sandra.
"Grandma."
Sharon followed Alex and greeted her, too.
Sandra's face lit up at the sight of Alex, and she ignored Sharon completely.
"Alex, you're back."
"Yeah, it's your birthday. If I didn't come, Grandpa would kill me."
Sandra's smile widened, smoothing out her wrinkles.
"Alright, go entertain the guests," said Sandra.
"Okay."
Alex wanted to take Sharon with him, but Sandra said, "Let your wife stay. I want to introduce her to some people."
Alex's eyes brightened. Without waiting for Sharon's response, he said, "Sharon, stay with Grandma. I'll be back."
A flash of coldness crossed Sharon's eyes as she felt a bit impatient.
However, Alex didn't give her a chance to refuse and quickly left.
Sandra looked at her and said indifferently, "Stand behind me."
Sharon hesitated but complied.
Sarah sneered, "Mom, don't bother introducing her. She's from a small family. She's been married to Alex for ages and still no kids. They might divorce any day, and then we'd have to explain. It's too much hassle."
Sharon knew the Smith family always looked down on her, so she was extra cautious around them, trying not to displease anyone.
This only made them take her even less seriously.
But now, Sharon didn't love Alex anymore. So, she didn't feel the need to tolerate it.
Sharon smiled slightly. "Divorce is better than never getting married. Right, Aunt Sarah?"
Sarah's face twisted, and her gaze was sharp. "Say that again!"
Sarah had been in a relationship once and waited for that man after they broke up. Now, almost forty and still unmarried, it was a sore spot for her. No one dared to bring it up.
Sandra's face darkened, too. Since Sharon had talked back to her last time, she had been displeased. Sandra had expected Sharon to apologize, but now, she was talking back to Sarah!
Clara looked at Sharon in surprise, her eyes full of doubt. Sharon must be crazy to say such things.
Sharon smiled, "Aunt Sarah, it doesn't matter how many times it's said. Being bullied requires a counterattack. As a member of the Smith family, you should know that."
"Enough!" Sandra snapped, "Today is my birthday, and you want to make a scene?"
Sharon's expression remained indifferent. Sarah could insult her, but her retaliation was seen as causing trouble.
"Grandma, you're right. Since Aunt doesn't like me, I won't stay here to annoy her. If we cause a scene in front of the guests, it would be embarrassing for the Smith family."
With that, Sharon turned and left. She had no patience to stay and be tormented by these women. Pleasing them did her no good.
Upstairs, David watched Sharon leave, his eyes full of calculation. He turned to the servant beside him and said coldly, "Is everything ready?"
"Yes, but doing this might..."
"No buts!" David cut him off coldly, "Tonight's plan must succeed. Do as I say, or you know the consequences."
The threat in his voice made the servant shiver, and he quickly nodded and left.
After waiting for over half an hour, Seb finally arrived. David sneered as he walked downstairs.
After speaking with Sandra, Seb turned to find a place to rest, only to have a glass of red wine handed to him.
"Seb, what have you been busy with lately? I've been trying to schedule a meeting with you through your secretary but haven't made it."
When Seb saw it was David, his eyes flickered, and he took the wine glass with an indifferent expression. "Brother David, tonight is Mom's birthday party. Let's not talk business."
David's grip on the wine glass tightened, and his smile was deepening. "If you say so. I'm just concerned about you as your older brother."
Seb said nothing, his face expressionless. However, David had no intention of leaving, continuing to make small talk.
Suddenly, Seb's gaze shifted to a corner of the hall, his brow furrowing slightly. Following his gaze, David saw a man talking to Sharon, and understanding dawned in his eyes.
Seb was about to walk towards Sharon when a few business partners intercepted him.
